It's also the case that the teenager has spent his entire life listening to other people tell him what to do. We hear about 'rebellious' teenagers specifically because children are supposed to just shut up and accept whatever they're told by an adult - at home, in school, in church. No backtalk, no difficult questions, certainly no skepticism. When you go to school, you get good grades by just repeating whatever you know the teacher wants to hear. Well, when you get your first job, the only difference is that you're being _paid_ for accepting whatever you're told. Of course, you don't have to _believe_ it, necessarily. You just have to do what you're told. Well, that's how I remember it, at least. Admittedly, it's been a long, _long_ time since I was a teenager. :)

The *only* cereal my Dad ever let me have was wheat Chex, so when we got the Chex Quest CD-rom it was just an extra little prize. I didn’t have a computer at Dad’s house, so I took it to Mom’s, and oh boy!! I had so much fun playing that game. My stepdad’s mom didn’t like it because she thought it was violent(?) and I had to assure her that it wasn’t, nobody dies, nobody gets injured. In Chex Quest, the bad guys just get teleported home.

Rather ironic that a child had to assure their parental figures that there was no deaths in the game and that the enemies essentially gets "teleported" somewhere else. One possible theory is that it was intended for the North American (and maybe European) market, but the execs didn't think it would sell well, so it was cut last minute. Also, a lot of Western media is marketed and sold in Japan, a direct result of the early 80s economic boom and tightening the business relations between Japan and the US. The "city pop", "j-pop" and other kinds of west-inspired music was sort of a reflection of prosperity back then. And for another example, as a music buff I can attest that even to this day, albums from U.S. artists are sold in Japan, where their booklets have info and bios in Japanese, and lyrics are often given both in English _and_ translated into Japanese. (As a matter of fact, this whole thing with Japanese exclusive releases, labels publishing and reissuing them, hiring music journalists and translators etc. is a small industry in its own right...) So it's not that weird that a videogame discarded as "not worth it" in the US would be released as a niche exclusive in Japan.

The best food tie in video game ever was "Yo! Noid" for the NES that was released in 1990. It was a game centered around "The Noid" who was the mascot for Dominos pizza. You were tasked by the mayor of New York to hunt down the evil clone of yourself using a yo-yo as your weapon. The game had an overworld map like Super Marios Brothers and one level has you navigate it on a skateboard and another is done on a pogo stick called "The Pizza Crusher". At the end of every few levels you face off with an evil Noid in a pizza eating contest. There even is a ice level where you have to fight guys who push curling stones at you and polar bears dressed as hockey players. That game ruled.

I had drastically different impressions of the game, and thought it was crap… though mine was the PC version so it might have been a different worse game. Edit: Just looked it up in Wikipedia and found the following As part of the advertising campaign, a computer game was released in 1989 called Avoid the Noid. The object of the game is to deliver a pizza within a half-hour time limit in an apartment building swarming with Noids (some of which are armed with pizza-seeking missiles or water balloons). The common version is version 1.0 and has CGA graphics and PC speaker sound effects, although version 1.1 also exists which added support for EGA graphics and Adlib music. In 1990, Capcom released a different video game, Yo! Noid, for the NES.

I'd love a follow up episode where John talks about fast food brands getting into games. There's the nightmare inducing burger King game and the (in)famously bizarre KFC dating sim and the more recent KFC gaming console that plays games AND keeps your chicken warm Seriously, there could be a segment all about KFC, I know it!

All the KFC stuff has only been in the last few years tho; kinda diverges from the 'style' and era when Snack King, Avoid the Noid, and the other fast food restaurant games were...

My favorite weird tie in game was Yo-Noid on the NES. Also the weird skateboarding honeycomb monster game from honeycombs was actually halfway legitimate.

I'm 48 years old and I cannot believe I've never heard of the Chex/DOOM game until this moment. I was playing so much god damn DOOM when I was a kid.

Anybody remember Burger King's "Sneak King", where you snuck around various locations like Solid Snake in MG:S, only to surprise them with a Whopper? I loved that game.

I loved Pocket Bike Racer from the same series as that game, with the same BK characters, but now I play it and it feels like complete trash lmao. The only redeeming thing about it is racing as Brooke Burke in a fucking fantasy giant hamburger candyland, no I'm not making that up.

Personally I think the pocket bike racing game killed it. It was a legit fun racing game.

The other BK game (crazy how they made MULTIPLE games) with the bumper cars was also very fun. Big Bumpin' was it? Good times.

I played Chex Quest a couple of years ago. It IS good, in some ways better than Doom: 1. No hitscanners - only projectile armed enemies. 2. Nice music. Not better than Bobby Prince music, but still really nice. 3. Whacky and creative environments.

Cool Spot was an awesome game. And the music from the bonus level is still to this day one of my favourite tracks in any video game. It's pretty impressive how good it sounds considering they only had 16 bits to work with.
