Built by King Levon of the Kingdom of Cilicia in 13th Century, this stunning medieval castle is in the Adana Province of Turkey. It is located on a rocky hill overlooking the east bank of the Ceyhan River. According to the wiki, the building is locally known to be the home of the shahmaran, a mythical creature half woman and half snake. I have seen this castle from distance back in the day when traveling by a minibus between Adana and Ceyhan and it was love at first sight. However, I was not able to visit until very recently while passing from the region. This time, I had my drone and was able to get some footage. However due to extreme heat and just being recovered from a long sickness\ I took it easy and didn't go up. I was also just learning how to fly the drone so it wasn't as good as I wanted. Until next time....

That's beautiful, thanks! We always saw the snake castle when we drove to Aleppo, many years ago. There was no access to the castle. Nobody climbed up that mountain. We lived in Adana 1961 t0 1964, worked at the Air Base in Incirlik. Greetings from Australia.

Wooww you really have a great memory of this place. I wonder how it looked at that time. This time I went it was in general in good condition. I couldn't climb due to heat and being sick, just flew the drone instead. Greetings to Australia.

@@meyavuz We only saw it from a distance. It looked like a pile of rubble. They must have done some rebuilding. Same with Kizkalesi. In summer we spend every weekend there. Great pictures with the drone. I watch many videos from the Tukiye of today and I am amazed how sophisticated Turkiye has become. Greetings to Turkiye.

It was absolutely terrifying! Some paths are so eroded and smooth as glass...I slipped at one point going down (and not that long trail you walk to get to it) at such a steep decline...I had nightmares for a while. Thought I was going to die. It's beautiful but...never again. Lol

Are the Villagers down in Ceyhan? There used to be an old lady that would watch the cars while you hiked up to the castle. She always carried a large walking stick and had a whistle. She would invite me down to her house in the village. She would share some Ayran from her large pot. She always gave me eggs when I left. This was back before the 1st Gulf war. I went back a few years later and learned that she had passed away. I still have her picture on my wall. She was in the field of yellow flowers holding a bag of eggs.

Wow, great and interesting memory of something that might not happen again. İ haven't seen any villagers at all. Just the coffee/tea house and 2 people in it. No signs of ayran anywhere close. İt was summer and weather was too hot and post COVID time. That might be the reason as well. İ was just passing by. Maybe this year more people are around. İ wonder how the earthquake impacted the castle as i couldn't get any info on that. Thank you for sharing your memory.

@@meyavuz That village was down at the very bottom of the hill the castle is on. It was an old village and the homes had dirt floors. I was wondering if the village would disappear over time. The village was full of very kind people. They were always amazed that I cam down to the village. Not many Americans would walk down thee. One day I saw some young boys fishing at that river. They had a stick with fishing line tied to it. They were catching all the fish down there. There was another castle not far from there. I think it was called Black Castle. It was a nice place to visit as well. Snake Castle was my favorite. It was a peaceful place with a nice view. Thanks for sharing that video.

@@paulnovakowski8358 I haven't seen the village actually but most probably they might have been replaced (which is happening in the last 10-20 years). Basically, government might have given them a new place to settle if they consider the place high interest due to various reasons (tourism, culture, historical artifacts etc)... I am not living in the area but I might go this summer again. If I do, I will check for the village and ask nearby people. Will try to update you here. Thanks for your interest and sharing your memories, they were great to hear.
