OK, English version sounds like James Bond while this version sounds like something out of Lupin III or a detective flick. Both are good in a different way.
The Japanese game has the same intro song as the North American game. It's supposed to evoke the feel of a 60's Bond intro, alluding to the game's setting and subject matter. However, this version is just a fun little Jazzy take on the song, not meant to be the actual theme for the game. Both versions achieved what they set out to do and they're both awesome. It's not a contest people...
Kojima is a Hollywood movie buff, he knows what he wants in his game. Everything he did in the MGS games were deliberate, he has a good taste in music.
This version is sang by Akiko Wada who has a couple nicknames, one of which being "The Boss" due to her role in a previous film in the 70s. Seems like a perfect fit, heh
Akiko was actually plagued by rumors that she was a cross dressing man early in her career - but her biggest secret only turned out to be that she was Korean, born in Japan and passing as fully Japanese until 2005.

Here it is (without the James Bond chords but funky) by The Consouls made in the 2020s ;) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-klGKDhZGt-M.html
Even though I didn't understand a thing about what's being sung here, after hearing the Western version for like a thousand times I must say that this version has a fresh, unique and yet somewhat nostalgic feel to it. Also, maybe it's just me but every time I hear Janpanese people speak English I just can't help to have giggle up.
Definitely some Bond chords in there - The Consouls cover is less Bond and more funk - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-klGKDhZGt-M.html - while the 8-Bit Big Band version ramps up the Bond feel.
I played snake eater for the first time when I was like 10 and this is so interesting to hear. This version of the song is so dope and such a unique twist on the version I’ve heard a hundred times. Pretty cool. This dudes voice is gangster as hell too.
like fr a mixture of the Japanese accent, the callback to the original song, and just the sheer energy that emanates from his delivery...best outro in any song ever imo
This would be the theme of the Lupin III x Metal Gear crossover where Lupin's gang attempts to steal the Philosopher's Legacy, and gets it, but Eva tricks Lupin into giving it to her without even trying.
In case anyone need the romaji Lyrics : Hitori yoru no yami o samayoi yobu koe ni kotae tokete yuku Anata no sasayaki kokoro kuruwaseru ai ni afurete inochi karete mo watashi wa subete sasageru Tatoe uchikudaka rete mo namida wa misenai Snake Eater Ame no naka ni futari nurete hikaru kizuato ashita wa mienai demo futari shinjite osorenai Ai ni afurete inochi karete mo watashi wa su bete sasageru Tatoe uchikudaka rete mo sore wa nozomi Snake Eater Oh~ I'm still in a dream snake eater You're welcome.

@Xterminator333 the japanese game also uses the english version, so most japanese people would probably be more familiar with the english version honestly. This song is on the album only.
This is *awesome*, I love the voice They should have included the Japanese version as an easter egg, it'd be nice to hear this one on that endless ladder sequence...
Imagine getting the HD remaster or a digital re-release of MGS3 in the west and getting this included as part of the OST alongside the English version...
Both versions of this song are amazing, but this version is the suave cigarette-smoking, sunglasses-inside-wearing, hair-slicked-back mysterious twin brother of the US song.
Hitori yoru no yami wo samayoi Yobu koe ni kotae toketeyuku Anata no sasayaki Kokoro kuruwaseru Ai ni afurete inochi karetemo Watashi wa subete sasageru Tatoe uchi kuda karetemo Namida wa misenai snake eater Ame no naka ni futari Nurete hikaru kizuato Asu wa mienai demo futari Shinjite osorenai Ai ni afurete inochi karetemo Watashi wa subete hageru Tatoe uchi kuda karetemo Sore wa nozomi snake eater I'm still in a dream Snake eater
"It is not Japanese edition strictly. This is [korabo] of the Japanese singer, in the game we are not used. With the game same ones as America are flowing" That's what I got when I tried converting the Japanese text. I'm not sure if you mean this song wasn't used in the Japanese version of MGS3, but instead still a bonus song? If so, that's quite interesting. Wonder if the Japanese copy of MGS3 still had the Snake Eater song from America then? :S
Can't believe dev teams (More like the corps on charge) try to lower the costs all they can While this was made to goof around War- i mean, games have changed
