Bob. my grandfather used to soak his in mineral oil for 2 weeks then take his fingers and squeeze the excess out and hang them in the barn in the shade to dry. I still have a dozen or so that are over 40 years old and in perfect condition. The colors are brilliant and they are soft and pliable. Thom

My boyfriend gave me one of the skins he had aquired when he was clearing his yard of several large rattlesnakes. Only he had soaked them in motor oil. They were rather icky and a little smelly so i soaked them in a strong solution of tea that was cooked until the water was black. And a lot of salt. ( yeah, neither one of us was very certain of the proper way of tanning. But but did take the smell away). I cant remember what else i did but one i wa done and dried it it came out satisfactory enough to sew it to a piece of felt to hang on a wall. It was a pretty patterned skin. The diamond markings were heart shaped in the center of the skin. I will always remember him with love when i look at it. He died of lung cancer a year after he gave it to me. He was the love of my life.

Thank You, Mr. Hansler. I've had a snake in my freezer for no less that 3 yrs, I think it could be 5 or more. All the tanning stiff I found was a bit out of my price range when I first investigated how to do this. I couldn't get my hands on glycerin as you used, I had to get Simple cleansing water. I just took the skin out and it seems fine. No smell other than the rubbing alcohol.

We live in the Texas panhandle over here at Flomot Texas. My dad, who passed 18 years ago, tanned snake hides. At one time, he had enough of them to make a 3 piece suit. I've got the vest he had made. I'm just now getting into this myself. Figured what the hell, after I killed 4 in one day outside the house. Killed another one that was trying to dry gulch me by sneeking up behind me the other day. I turned around and there he was about 5 feet from me slithering up. So far I now have 9 in the freezer. I appreciate your presentation. It was very educational, thx..

Didn't know anything about preserving the skin, so talked to my brother who suggested stretching it out on a board and salting it until I could find out how to preserve it. Using the glycerin and alcohol sounds like an easy way to preserve the skin. Hopefully it will be ok. The tutorial was very helpful
