Active contours or snakes are a popular technique used in image segmentation for object recognition and tracking in digital images. In active contour image segmentation, the edges of objects in an image are used to create an initial contour, and the contour is then iteratively updated based on its distance to the image edges and the image features to improve the segmentation result.
