Snap, the maker of Snapchat, is releasing its first self-flying drone called Pixy. At $229, it's the lightest and easiest-to-use drone we've tried. Just don't expect cinematic footage.

It’s a weird price point for me… if it was sub-$200 I would probably just buy it for the novelty despite not using Snapchat. But as it stands, the DJI Mini SE is just $30 more and it’s tough to recommend the Pixy over that one.

I believe the price is a bit steep for an entry into market item. But I also seeing this device easily being discounted within a year, when a V2 drone releases. I'm quite impressed of the drone itself. Portibility is there ease of usage and when the drone drops in price enough these will become mass produced and highly affordable. Not much tech is going into these things but just my opinon ;) buy Snap.

The main issue with something like this catching on is the balance between price and pixels. At $299.99 while it is relatively inexpensive, I don’t think the average person will want to buy it. And those who may want to take pictures with it (ie influencers) won’t make it their day-to-day because its resolution is too low. The tech needs time to be more cost effective

It's odd, the Verge article (and other publications) say the price is actuall $230 which is a little better, but I agree it's still pricey... in the $100 range it would start being much more interesting... although the image quality is bad and I don't even use Snapchat myself.

I feel like in this case we are paying not just for the device but the abilities of the device at that price point compared to others with these abilities that range at 1000 or more. The idea here being the poor mans drone that feels OK.

Fascinating! Intriguing... But, one note to Verge reviewers; I don't feel you need to apologize multiple times for a hardware product not being a barn burner/ubiquitous/must have. The U.S. can comfortably support niche products. "If you like this sort of thing, you will like this thing" is a perfectly useful position to take.

The camera quality compared to any other consumer drone (like the Mavic Mini 2 specifically) is wayyyyyy too poor for the price point. I could imagine like.. 80$ for a toy like this being appropriate as a launch price. The current price point is silly though

Snapchat to me is about being authentic and spontaneous - this drone feels way more like a tool for elaborate orchestration, aka a tool for Instagram and RU-vid. For the latter though the quality seems not quite up to par.

I definitely see the market for this. I won't be sending it for snapchat or be an influencer with it, but it'll be a decent product for hikers, fishers, skaters, and could see it used for family gatherings to capture footage without the need for taking out your phone. I'll be watching out for this product and is a perfect size and has all the capabilities that would otherwise be only available in more expensive products.

the form factor is great, price and camera quality not so much. if this was $150 it could possibly sell well but 300 is way too much. for that same price you could buy an oculus quest 2, or a 3d printer.

Powered by qualcomm snapdragon. I think Snap has created something well beyond a flying selfie cam but a drone buddy. Alexa will be flying around on one of these soon
