The M3 Pro, the binned version has smoked it in every aspect. Not winning, smoking when it’s 3-6 times faster, quieter with better battery and efficiency. The GPU on the elite is a joke. SW compatibility and miserable Prism is a joke. Imagine the unbinned M3 Pro, lol. Or the Max. And the M4 is on the doors with much better graphics and Neural Engine! Advice: Watch the video again and again to grasp the facts. But this was highly expected.

Disagree. I bought M1 Mac mini, M1 MBAir in early 2021, to support this breakthrough and they are still effective. Hence will support Snapdragon Elite X by purchasing a Copilot+PC, either this Surface or the cost effective Yoga slim.

The thing about battery life is that the M3 pro has around 70Wh battery whereas the surface only has 54Wh battery combined with the fact that many of these applications are not yet optimised for the X Elite means there is a greater penalty for running emulation

Yes the X Elite uses about the same amount of power as M3 Pro, at least when pushing it, but gets less performance. I believe in lighter loads with more apps open, the X Elite uses quite a bit more.

The problem with Surface devices has always been their relatively small batteries, which were very noticeable on their Intel devices. Shame they haven't upped them like other X Elite laptops. It of course, also means that if you do not look after them, they will need replacing much earlier than the MB Pro 14.

But Apple still emulates Rosetta, so it’s not a valid Justification, they made a lot of fuss around the Chipset compared even to the M4, and in fact it doesn’t beat the base M3.

@@SergioWolf843 I'm not one to make excuses for Qualcomm/Microsoft, but the vast majority of Mac apps have Apple silicon support, vs barely any having ARM support on Windows at this point, so emulation will be in use more often. That being said, that fact in itself is a downside for the time being. The X Elite uses as much power as M3 Pro, and like you say, often doesn't even beat the last generation M3. A fair comparison would be against the M4 MacBook Pro when it releases later this year, which will be even more powerful than the binned M3 Pro, and, well you saw the results of that comparison.

@SergioWolf843 and Qualcomms graphics is based on a sdx, apple uses metal. You can't even run the m3 graphics through opencl benchmarks. That's not a bad thing. It just means that software that uses opencl needs to be optimized or it won't run on a macbook. It's basically the same issues apple had with the m1. Also, there are two emulation layers, one for the cpu process and a seprate one for the gpu process. He was also wrong, davanci resolve is sort of optimized. It's still in Beta version.

A base spec M3 air is cheaper, has passive cooling, has fewer cores, the list goes on The only reason MS and others compare to an Air chassis M3 is because it's the only way to make their X-Elite SoC's look good

@@jamaharon it's an Air. It's for web browsing and office documents. 8GB doesn't give much headroom but 16GB is overkill for a fan-less passively cooled device. The M4 will be base 12GB from what we've seen with the M4 in iPad The Surface sits between the Air and the Pro models. It's overbuilt for browsing/documents but doesn't hold up to the GPU tasks required for professional use That explains why MS have priced it in between the two and switched to base 16GB (previous to this release they were on par with macbooks $/GB between the two models)

The user base really doesn't overlap much no apple user would spring to windows if its little worse in value and not many windows users would jump anymore if anything these new arm machines windows machines are more than good enough to keep many/most people on windows.

@@fmax3000 yes, but the xelite isn't a direct competitor to the MacBook Pro. That's like like comparing a Nvidia rtx 4090 to the graphics iand rtx 4090 a 24 core thread rippe to a m3. The x1e-84 is the direct competitor to the 10 core Macbook Air. People get confused, because the xelite has 12 cores and this is a fundamental misunderstanding on how CPu's function. Every Manufacture uses different Cores, more cores doesn't mean more performance unless you are comparing cores within the same architecture. The Google Chromebook has 14 cores, and no sane person thinks for a second that a chromebook competes with the M3 pro just because it has 14 cores. I'm a video editor and I wouldn't by a xelie laptop, but I also wouldn't buy a Macbook air or macbook pro base model. because neither are powerful enough to handle the demands of professional video editing.this is just such a bizarre comparison. but outside of a professional creative environment. either a xelite or m3 air is more than enough for most people. though, none come close to a macbooks build quality.

It doesn't bother me too much but it does some people so maybe you ought to institute some sort of double checks on those in particular before final release. For GPU task macbook is better, since M3 onwards graphics is better, previous mac have terrible graphics, for CPU tasks, X elite is a champ, with great, CPU, more RAM, more SSD, for much cheaper . Next gen Xelite will have 2.5X minimum GPU improvement to stay in competition with macbook. with almost same cost the next gen will be amazzing. as arm chips are small, manufacturing thic chip is cheaper even though they are on smaller node.

X-Elite already falling behind, but hopefully the 16GB base memory specs give Apple the kick up the @$$ they deserve to ditch the 8GB base spec

It's a bullshit he spew out. Davinci resolve that he's using is Free and Beta version. Only studio version has GPU support. This version is not using GPU at all. And the developers need to work on optimizing it. @@MoChuang343

The problem is that Qualcomm is not selling ANY of their high-end chips which boost single-core speeds by 20% and have 20% more GPU power. So every benchmark looks bad because they made a huge marketing mistake by releasing 5 different chips 4 of which are "X Elite" and this is the 3rd-place chip, benchmarked here ... But yes, I am surprised the battery life is only about 10-15% better than Intel. Also, Qualcomm is using 4nm chips whereas Apple is using 3nm chips so Apple is WAY MORE POWER EFFICIENT but bloody costly!

I’m going to cut the surface some slack especially in blender and da Vinci…because things will get better for them from software updates….but by that time the m4 macs will be out and xelite will be behind again….i think it’s time to stop comparing them to apple because most people are one side or the other….but let’s compare the xelite to other windows laptops….they might not get the battery life….but I think most people just keep laptops plugged in most of the time…and see if a $750 windows laptop can beat or match these elitex …in other words are you getting anything for twice the price…except more battery ?

Nah fam, performance and battery life matter more to me than the OS. For many of us all that matters is that our professional applications work best with great battery life, whichever laptop does that is the one I buy, and currently that obviously means mac. I'd prefer to use Windows but performance and efficiency are more important to me.

I don't have any loyalties when it comes to laptop brands. I like the way the Surface feels to use. I also like MacBooks, but they don't have touch screens. The Snapdragon Surface is almost perfect, but it would actually be perfect if I could get a touchscreen MacBook instead. But I can't, so I got the thing that checked the most boxes.

No, not exactly. Binned down is a term that has been consistently used, it refers to the process of binning in general which is primarily used to get useful products out of silicon with defects. Binning up only became a thing in recent years, with i7 3000 it was all bin downs from their HEDT stuff down to the lowly i3s but now they bin specific 13900s as able to clock 100-200MHz higher and call them 13900ks instead. That used to be referred to as the silicon lottery.

A "bin" is usually a storage tub, not a "rubbish bin"; "binned" just refers to a unit which has been sorted into a certain bin/tub based on specs It seems to be used to specify a chip is different from the standard version (ie, it has been sorted or "binned" separately to the standard product) ie, "binned" is not necessarily synonymous with "better" or "worse", more-so "different"

I will say it will take time for Davinci to truly be optimized for the new spapdragon chips. I have an M1 MacBook Pro and I remember when they first optimized it and I was like wow this is pretty good and then like a year later they released a new update claiming they optimized it even more and that it was now 3x faster, and guess what….. it actually was a lot faster when it came to exports, I had a video, I made for my school, that was over an hour long and originally it took about 50 minutes to export, after the update it did it in 25 minutes. So I am hopeful that something similar might happen with these knew chips

Hey Max, do you know if it’s safe to use my MBP always plugged in ? The thing is that the battery only lasts for 4-5 hours for my daily tasks. (And it’s not due to the age of computer as it is new ) I know it’s because of all the stuff I have running. And question two, am I right that laptops shouldn’t be turned off to continue working next day?

Laptops like Hp, Dell and Lenovo have a setting in the BIOS that mitigates the damage on the battery when it it always being charged when the device is plugged in. The basic principle there is that it limits the charging threshold to around 50-80% max depending how long and frequent you keep the laptop plugged. My HP laptop of 3 years still has about 80% of its original battery life even after using it plugged in most of the time.

Snapdragon CPU initially designed for servers gets owned by the MB pro. If anyone’s talking about fairness, let’s start there to those who are crying this isn’t a fare fight. It goes to show you how much experience Apple has at CPU design and hardware, that the top industry companies haven’t been able to compete just yet even years after the M1 was considered a massive success.

Are you aware that the Elite X was designed by previous Apple engineers, that were working on the original Apple Silicon M1 deisgn? I think the issue is, it was launched as a competitor to the M2 but couldn't be released in time. Now it has a hard time keeping up with M3/M4.

I call that eating Qualcomms lunch, they should've gone back to the drawing board when they realized it was this bad. The M4 claps the SDX on efficiency.

It's on par with iris xe 96 Way slower than meteor lake arc and hawk point 780m. Strix point 890m is coming in few weeks with massive improvements. Qualcomm should be worried heavily.

@GarrusVakarian-to2uh most people who buy a MacBook Air don’t need it for those things. Most people are doing basic computing which is what I was alluding to. Media consumption, internet browsing, productivity. These machines will do those 3 things very very well and don’t require you to change operating systems. Even light renders and photo editing would be fine

That goes both ways, the Surfaces and the MacBooks both used to use Intel x86 CPUs and both Windows and macOS had to be updated to support ARM CPUs. Therefore this shows that for now Apple is better at doing ARM than Microsoft and Qualcomm, but who's surprised considering Apple's 4+ years of experience on that front? Any app for any platform needs to be shipped for ARM to support ARM, macOS just appears to do it better because developers have had much more time to port their apps. Give it a couple years and we may see serious competition from the not-Apple side.

Kinda it's true that would give it best performance. but other reviewers have said the performance penalty for non native apps is quite low compared to in the past for these new chips. Only 10-15% on average..

I have seen the 1TB Surface Laptop have a similar speed(s) so MS may be restricting bandwidth or performance of SSDs. So adding another SSD may just waste your money.

This is the most helpful review for me in terms of video editing performance, I've been considering the Surface Pro for video editing & wanted to know how the X Elite works on Davinci Resolve, & against Macs. I do 4K60 video editing with color grade/Fusion/Mosaics & the result was showing Mac still does so much better & can't even be a competitor. I now have M1 Pro MBP & for my next PC, I'll wait for M4 MBP or get something(Discounted/Used/Refurbished) of M3 MBP, instead of Surface Pro(X Elite)

Apple mentions running 4 HD cameras and reencoding a video senario . Can any of the PC's do that? I'd like to see you do some comparisons of this while backing up the video for each camera and the encoded feed to attached SSDs. This would be a good comparison also.

In tests the X Elite have a bit stronger results, but the GPU exactly the same like the SD8G3 had, maybe they added one extra core or just increased the base clock frequency, so the result a bit better in X Elite, but it's the same GPU.

In seeing Qualcomm only increased the power of the GPU and beat Apple, the TBDR Architecture that Apple inherited from the partnership with IMG remains the most efficient, now they have the RTX along with TBDR, an overwhelming design and at the same time efficient, the performance per Watt of Apple’s GPU is Higher, the impression I have is that Apple is about 2/3 years ahead of the competition.

After heavy testing of 3 hours 30 mins, macbook pro had 25% remaining, and Surface Laptop had 7% remaining. A couple of things to take a note of, Surface Laptop has a much smaller battery and he tested a lot of apps that are not supported natively by ARM, it had to run emulated version. I have Surface Laptop 7, for a day to day use, it seems to have a solid battery life.

review noted surface has touch with no mention of pen support that is really useful. having that allows you to get rid of printers and complete pdf forms, including parts requiring signatures, w/o printing them out and scanning completed form back in.

I liked this comparison between very similar laptops. Most people just want care about all the graphics since almost no one is a graphics artist or content creator other than RU-vidrs. That said, as a techie and a business user I would appreciate extended battery life. The real issue for me is the ecosystem and the ecosystem for people like me is far stronger on Windows. I have both and I somewhat prefer it for development (since MacOS is really Linux at the end of the day). This was the best comparison of the two types of laptops I've seen. Much better than the 100% fanboy channels. Also, better than the Snapdragon release hype train.

You know the most impressive thing with these X-Elite stuffs... This is gen 1 and we are comparing to M3 Pro.. Gen 3 That is actually a great accomplishment.. And a huge win for consumers.. This is amazing actually.. But for now.. The M3 Pro here is better cause you get a better screen and speaker if that's important to you. But if you have to use Windows... The Surface here is super duper impressive.

Agree, also please note that it took both microsoft and qualcomm almost 5 years to compete with last years m series chip. Its fair to say that the 2nd gen of Elite will be release next year around this time trailing behind m4. But still again props to microsoft and qualcomm. Their next goal now is to convince app devs to switch to ARM which normally takes years and years.

And Apple, just like snapdragon have been in the business of Arm chips for years. It's harder to collaborate on things like this, and having to account for a lot of manufacturers too.. So yeah, big ups to them and as a consumer, I am really happy. I think devs will jump on quickly.. Considering two major players in the tech consumer market are now competing with Arm Chips (Apple and Microsoft)... Considering their OS are popular and what most people use, I think devs will begin to optimize sooner..

Please! Compare the performance of the new neural noise reduction in Lightroom! It is calculated locally (not in the cloud) on the RTX 3060m, one photo from the Sony a7 III takes approximately 15 seconds. It’s very interesting how it works on Snapdragon - is it bad because of the weak GPU or does the NPU help?

This honestly tracks pretty well with what I expected. What Qualcomm did is very impressive, but this is a first gen chip going up against a very mature and refined design, and Snapdragon chips have never quite managed to match Apple's silicon. That's not to say the X Elite isn't incredible! It's just up against very stiff competition.

I returned a MacBook Air to pre order the surface laptop 7. Build quality on both is excellent. Neither is cheap. For what I need, the surface has been awesome and I don’t have to deal with macOS to get a laptop with good battery life. Snapdragon and m series apple is a win for the laptop market.

No matter how fast the snapdragon is, the most important issue is what is the x86 software compatibility at full speed. Is it that x86 compatibility is so good that it is not an issue any more, or it is something that it is not being mentioned when it is the most important issue for most people. The last time we had an ARM Windows PC, x86 software was so slow that it was not worth the long battery time it offered. This time the ARM CPU is fast, but does it mean that the emulated x86 performance is just as fast as a real Intel laptop and just as widely compatible as a real x86 intel CPU?

I guess you just don't understand X86 vs ARM ... ARM is much better system.... X86 is backwards compatible so you can take a piece of software and potentially run it on a 286/386/486 all the way up to what we have now, and that is a huge limitation and slow down of the system. It's BIOS is ancient. ARM on the hand.... So, x86 is going away finally. But just like apple, it will probably take a good 3~4 years to convert all the drivers, software over to ARM from X86. But, it will happen.

The reason why Apple products often times work so seamlessly, is because at the end of the day, Apple does a better job with making their software efficient and easy to use and it just runs very well compared to windows

Kind of strange so many people were calling for this. These snapdragon chips and the surface have always been positioned against the MacBook Air M3 not the M3 pro. And since GPU has not been at all a focus for these chips, they are going to get utterly stomped in anything that requires graphics processing.

But if you calculate that how the devices keep their price, alias which one have better resale price when you buy a new one (just check the M1 price, which is a 4 years old Macbook recently..), and which one gives you 7-8 free OS updates instead of forcing you to buy their new Windows version on your own.. the difference basically not even exists..

Major windows revisions are free just the same as MacOS. And I don’t think most people honestly think or care about electronics resale pricing. Like in theory sure that’s great that, but it presumes the machine is in sellable condition and in my experience most people run their electronics into the ground before they replace them or just give them to family or a friend if they are still good.

I kinda like the surface speaker system slightly more. The Macbook M3 Pro is so bassy that it's muddy sounding & drowns out the vocals (at least in this recording) making me prefer the slightly tinny sounding Surface.

I dont know if you know that but the score you got with the surface may be not exact. For the web browser, did you installed the Edge ARM version? Because the default version is emulated under prism. For the performance, did you change the power mode and plant in order to improve the performance? Biggest problem with Snapdragon is... Windows. I will not buy another Windows device unless I can install Linux on it. Microsoft couldn't pay me to use Windows 11.
