Aquarian for me. Switched a few years ago. Never looked back. Incredible value at almost 1/3 of the price of Evans and Remo here in Canada. Tried a variety of their heads. Texture Coated, Texture Coated with Power Dot, Super-2, Modern Vintage, Snare Resonant, Response II. They have all been exceptional.
I’ve tried the three main brands and my impression is that Aquarian has a darker tone, Evans is bright and Ambassador is warm and sits between the two. So you can chose a head based on what you want to here more of from your snare. I mostly use Ambassador and Aquarian but would certainly chose an Evans G1 if I wanted a brighter tone. (Personal opinion, not scientifically verified 😅)
I’ve used all of those brands on snare drums, the REMO ambassador is industry standard for a reason. Sounds great on snare drums and toms, the Aquarian TC is also good. Don’t care much for the Code or Evans. Only one of these heads is made with original DuPont Mylar. 🤔😜
Hi! I hope that one day you release a video about the sound that the "toe" drummer has because it seems to me to be a very good drum sound, which fits completely with the band and above all... it is one of the few bands where the "overdrumming" it's not irritating at all.
I've tried an Aquarian and it does fit tight, maybe too much. Great sound, the coating is very tough and I think it dampens the overtones a bit more. Evans is good but if you have a head sitting on the shelf for some time, the coating becomes sticky and nasty. Remo ambassador for me is unbeaten.
I tend to play Evans and Remo, all the time its coated but not necessarily one ply. Fron your little examination, i have to say that my preference goes to the Remo Ambassador.
Pretty similar sounding, but based on this comparison only, I thought the Aquarian and Code marginally won, but for brush work, the Remo had the best sound. I’ve used the Code DNA before and liked them, the coating really lasts well.
I'm prefer Remo and as a drummer, I have tried all of the showed brands. For Evans head, I just only like the UV1 and Emad. And for rhe UK Code heads, i tried them and they are really good quality heads.
I would really like to see a video on the difference between animal skin drum heads and synthetic skin drum heads and wich synthetic brands are most like natural skin heads
I routinely use Remo Emperor on joy 1973 Ludwig supersensitive. Love the classic sound, but the coating is not very durable. The Aquarian also sounds great on my snare, and the coating lasts a long time. Tried the Evans, did not care for it.
My drums do not have any round over on the outer part of the bearing edge. Because of the design of Remo heads, I can't use them because they don't sit on the bearing edge evenly. I've been using Aquarian heads for years without any kind of fitment problems. My kit is a 2000 model year Ludwig Maple Classic. I don't consider them vintage. Maybe the classic name is a connection to older bearing edge cuts. Whatever the reason I have used Evans 360 without fitment problems but the coating flakes off easier than others. Pretty happy with Aquarian and they have a ton of different heads to suit your needs. More than the competition in my opinion. I sound like I should be selling them.😂
Might be worth checking out the UV1 or UV2 which last insanely long. I play metal and don't hold back and I've not been able to play through the coating ever. I even have to remind myself to change them once in a while as there's almost no visual indicator they are wearing out (which also takes longer as the film itself is also more durable). Mind you: they also sound different than G1s oder G2s - it's not just a more durable version of the same head.
Timely video because I was just wondering about this. I usually stick to coated ambassadors but like you said all brands can work. The seating process of Remos kinda bugs me too. Also on a couple of my snares I have an Aquarian Jack dejohnette head on them and they sound good too.
Aquarian coated heads hold up 1M times better than Weather King or Evans. I can’t comment on DNA. If you are a brush player Aquarian is the clear choice!
from my personal experiences Remo’s has problems with quality consistency - one drumhead can stay “alive” for a months, another the same model drumhead just dies after one concert. from all the bunch here i’d choose Aquarian because of its heavy coating, which gives most focus on the sound and feeling
