@@ArtOfDrumming Slipknot uses an aluminum baseball bat for the keg part instead of drum sticks, and they don't hit the keg during the chorus. Other than that GREAT JOB!
@@graysontheginger Are you saying that they used something different in the original to get that sound or just that you can't hear it? If the latter, then I'd recommend listening to the drum track that others have put onto RU-vid (obviously original drum track not Midi or covers).
@@revelationssoloprojectdisc8489 I think during self titled he used a pearl sensitone or some other steel snare, during Iowa I think he started using ocdp
@@WillCtheMechDrummer During Self titled to IOWA was when he used Orange County Drums, he got endorsed by pearl later on in the Iowa Era, close to vol 3
Riffs, Beards & Gear and channels like this one is why I’m where I’m at with music and knowledge. I thank you guys and have 110% respect for anyone putting their time into teaching the community. Much Love ❤️
His snare sound is what will always stick with me forever. But his double bass sound was incredibly influential and still one of the best ever. RIP Joey.
@@Frontdesk99 what? of course not that would take years of playing man plus I only I want to play like him not play exactly how he plays. Do you get what I’m trying to say i kinda suck at explaining…
@@mikes1256 start with stuff like acdc then move up from there- have fun with it and just play along with songs. If you tried to practice by the book it gets boring quick. you wouldnt tell a 16 year old to drive an f1 car, so dont expect to play hard stuff right away.
@@beaumowery5610 Yep, it does get boring. Right now I play electric guitar, I have been playing for 1 and a half years and I’m still learning scales and solos from songs but i know some riffs to. I also have a bit of experience playing the drums one of my friends let me use his kit and practice but since the pandemic i haven’t been able to go to his house.
Phenomenal recreation as always, just the ride was completely off, Joey used a really heavy pingy ride so an A Custom Ping Ride or an S Rock Ride (what Jay Weinberg uses) would've been ideal
The thing I like the most about this channel is that I watch it for the content, regardless of whether I like the drummer/band that's being profiled or not. Keep up the good work and thumbs up for another great video.
Out of all the artists deaths that I’ve experienced in my lifetime, Joeys death just *still* doesn’t feel real. I don’t know how to describe it. I just don’t want to believe it. Such an inspiration to me.
Me too man it was always a goal to meet him and I still have conversations in my head about what I'd ask him in regards to drumming and music. I'll never get to meet my childhood hero and it feels so odd. It feels like he's still here I just can't believe it man.
"The 13x6.5 1 mm thick steel shell provides a super crisp attack, and still has a nice body, just like Joey himself." You play like that every night of your life, you stay ripped. RIP JJ.
This comment means a lot to me personally! I love your channel and have learned a lot through your videos. Thanks! Do you have a specific question about the mix that I can answer?
@@pascal_thielen Thanks for the kind words! One of the things that we've emphasized from the beginning is how much the production side can color the sound of acoustic drums and often mislead viewers to believe that they're hearing exactly what the drums sound like in the room. Your brief overview of the drums, heads, general tuning, and microphones were excellent. We'd love to see more on the rest of the signal chain. Starting with the raw audio and adding in the EQ, compression, gating, reverb, etc. would really help provide a transparent view of how the tones were sculpted. Cheers!
No disrespect to Jay because even though he's talented as hell, Joey can never be replaced. A lot of drummers from bands who started since Slipknot made it big admits they were somehow influenced by Joey.
Joey was my Influence into drums and music. Listening to Joey was the very first time I isolated the drums and just listened out for him. He made me appreciate drums and fills In a song and how it's the backbone. I remember being 12 years old and listening to other music after that and asking myself why isn't there endless double bass and sick fills everywhere? He was just something else and his death doesn't feel real yet. I'm 23 now and I feel like a part of my childhood is gone. You can't even buy his signature blood Promark drumsticks anymore. I used to buy so many pairs In my teens and broke them all or gave them away when I had one stick left. Never did I realize there was a finite amount. And the ones that are left are hundreds of dollars treated as collector items. It's a shame. I am depression lol
I have to say. I’m sure most would say the same thing. Joeys snare is my all time favorite sounding snare of all time. Live that thing sounded incredible.
Wow, My favourite drummer is Joey and my drum teacher has this drum set, what a pleasure! My teacher plays in a metalcore band (they're Italian but the vocalist sing in English), they're called "The wind covenant" and they're really not bad! I recommend the song "damnation"
I loved his driving energy on the kit and the way he only used the double bass hits when needed, not constantly because they lose the effect that way. I notice that this particular track could really be played with just one Tom😏
Very very close i dig it! i think the drums were mixed a little too quiet, some of the snare inflections and rolls got lost, BUT very impressed! I need to get me a joey snare ASAP :c Good job on the video! \m/
Great video!!! Love the editing I’m very surprised you haven’t done the late great Vinnie Paul, his drum parts are Legendary!! Keep making videos and rock on🤘🏻
Your kit probably sounds better than the actual Volume 3 sound did. I hated the drum sound on that record compared to the first two and the live sound up until that point. It was so flakey and washy and more rock than aggressive metal. I still hate it to this day. Great album, but it lost a lot by having that less aggressive sound and more seemingly old 'we used cardboard boxes for the drums and terrible mics for the rest of the instruments'.
You say the batter heads on the kick drums are powerstroke 3 clear? Yet I can clearly see they are the standard ',pearl/ stock heads that come with the drums from new... wtf?
Wow what a FANTASTIC JOB! My favorite one so far. Thanks for all the details from tuning to mic placement and the history of Joey and Slipknot. Seriously well done.
Great! There are very very few cymbals that sound as bad as the Paiste Rude, so this kit sounds way better hahahaha, but still, just say that you're sponsored by Zildjian and that's why you chose those.
@@trouty I've seen them, but this one and the Chad Smith one, they used everything exactly like them, but the cymbals, they used Zildjian. Something's fishy here.
@@Ian-sn7ci No, look at the shot of "their cymbal collection" there's only Zildjian, not like their other videos... I think Zildjian sponsors some of the videos.
@@jonhattanrai There are 3 cymbals other than Zildjian used in this kit too, must be sponsored by them too. Also they post these and have a website free for you to use so I don't complain if it's free content
While this is well done. The cymbal choices really is nothing like Joey's sound. Now I get it's what you had laying around, and a whole paiste setup would be expensive. But honestly, Joeys paiste setup for vol 3 with rudes is nowhere near Zildjian.
Especially because they are heavier cymbals with natural lathing for the most part. They cut because of their weight not glassy brilliant finish like these. Same reason John in System used a few early on. Rude’s really shaped the sound of Nu-Metal drummers. Loud as fuck but so dynamic.
@@FanaticDrummer Well, he even changed to 2002s later on. However the Paiste sound is just so unique, which is why I have a hard time with Jays cymbal choices. A Customs for me are just way too glassy and thin for this style of music, lacks body and character.
@@sempthegreat Yea I never liked them. Which is why I hate Mangini’s A custom cymbal choices for Dream Theater. Same problem. Too thin and glassy, does nothing for the mix, only clutters the guitar and keyboard frequencies. Sounds like radio rock. Thats what happened with slipknot. Heavy weight cymbals recording loud then mixed down sound better than thin cymbals mixed to be louder.
4:00 ... even that he played Paiste cymbals, we want to show that you can get close to his sound even with other cymbals .... yeah ... Jay Weinberg shows that at every gig with his Zildjians ... btw ... Max Weinberg also deserves one of this clips 🙃😉
This is crazy awesome! You nailed the feel and tone! then only time I can tell its not joeys performance is the snare fills, you don't quiet get the same feel but I imagine that's a lot like how a guitarist tone is in the hands though! anyway amazing video! Subbed and rang the bell!
Man, this was great. On top of the fact that this was just super tight, this (and other videos of yours) makes me realise just how versatile of a drummer you gotta be to do all these videos cleanly. Well done, sir. Keep up the excellent work.
@@ArtOfDrumming hey, thank you for doing all these videos! I love watching, but if I’m being perfectly honest, as somebody with different genres coming into the studio your videos have been insanely helpful in figuring out drum head choice and how to get as many sounds as possible from a kit.
The Zildjian's sound alot different than Joey's Paiste's, everything else is spot on but the cymbals make it sound off. I have the same complaint about Jay Weinberg, he uses Zildjian's and to my ear they completely change the overall sound. Nothing against Zildjian, they just don't have that shimmer.
Yeah, I don't get that. The whole point of the video is to recreate the sound as closely as possible and then they just go with completely different cymbals. Especially since Joey was probably the most famous Paiste Rude endorser.
I remember being 13 or 14 years old watching RU-vid videos of Joey in 240p playing some festivals and just being blown away at his precision and speed. He was a legend in the industry
I was in a band produced by clown. When he came to our practice space of course I was rocking Jordison's snare. When we recorded at Sound City he caught me and my guitarist playing Pulse of the Maggots and clown comes in and tells us to, "Cut that sh1t out." True story.
You gotta revisit this concept and use his or try to replicate his 2000 live sound; sabian cymbals, remo heads, ocdp drums, iron cobra pedals, ahead drum sticks, and you can’t forget that LOUD aluminum or brass snare, still not sure what the snare was.
What is the stand or combination of hardware you used for the 2 splash / volcano cup set up? I’ve been wanting something like that for a while for my kit.
Zildjian cymbals DO NOT sound good in extreme metal. They are the best for music that isn't as busy, loud, or have such low frequencies. Paiste are by far the best for heavy, fast, aggressive music. Meinl are great, but their hi-hats and rides lack a little in that department. They only have one ride that sounds great for metal and three or four hi-hats. They have a lot of really great cymbals, though, and their chinas and splashes are some of the best in the business. Sabian has some great cymbals for metal, but you are narrowed down to only 2 lines to choose from, and they're extremely expensive. With Paiste, you have more variety.... for metal. You can go the expensive route with the Formula 602 and Signature Dark Energy lines. Or spend less with (the better sounding) Signature Series and Signature Reflector lines. If that is still too pricy, you have the iconic 2002 and Rude lines. I don't like Paiste's Intermediate lines these days, but a lot of people will agree that their beginner lines (PST 5 and PST 7) are the best sounding for the money. They messed up by discontinuing the Alpha Series and replacing it with the 900 Series. The Alphas were Intermediate prices, but sounded pro-level. A lot of professionals used them and still do. I still own an Alpha china, crash, and hi-hat, even though I use mostly Signature Series. I also have some old, discontinued professional line Sound Formula, Innovations, and 3000 Series cymbals. Some of the older pieces sound so good!
Wow. 20 mics for the drums. This is unheard for me and unbelievable. Most I have heard of was 12 - 2 for the bass, 2 for the snare, one for each tom so another 3 mics, 1 for hi hat, 2 for overheads and 2 for the room. :) But this was for a standard 5-piece kit with 4-5 cymbals.
record a video showing how the Drums mix process looks like, because this is the most important thing when creating the sound of the Instrument during recording
I loved slipknot because of the heavy hitting beats that Joey wrote and was known for. I've been a fan since M.F.K.R and have all of their CDs up to All Hope Is Gone. It's a shame what Corey and Shawn did to him. Without Joey, Slipknot wouldn't be where they are today. After Paul's death, the band lost their way. Then there's Chris... I had no idea that most of them aren't even "in the band", but "contractors"... WTF?! Joey had a unique sound and intensity that is often imitated but never matched. I've seen them 12 times live throughout the years... those days are gone. What they did to Paul, Joey, Chris, and Jim is reprehensible and I refuse to support a band that's more of a corporation than a family. Seeing their videos is like watching dad hit mom at the dinner table and we're all still trying to eat. Slipknot is no longer an avenue of stress relief for me. It's depressing how far they've fallen. And it's even more sad that they are a shell of their former selves.
Love this. I did a cover of this for IG years ago with a trash can, this massive copper pipe that I used to have on my kit, and that same snare. Didn't have 20+ channels going for my mix though haha. Great work on all of these videos. The attention to detail is phenomenal.
It's nothing but hitting the corner of the keg gives a higher pitch hit the side of the keg like they did with a bat for the right note :) it's a small thing but 1 of my favorite parts of the song ............amazing though!!! 👍 I will like and subscribe
