Been listening to these guys for about three years and think they're the best band around with fantastic writing, and yet it just struck me a couple of days ago that, to me, Snarky Puppy is the evolution of the "big band". Complex, orchestrated arrangements for a large instrumental ensemble, blending jazz, funk, gospel and worldbeat; but the instrumentation isn't 5 saxes, 4 bones, 4 trumpets and a rhythm section. It's interesting to me because I've felt the big band entity has died. When I was a teenager in the late 70's there were still some of the legendary big bands touring: Kenton, Maynard, Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Woody Herman -- but that's about it. These bands were still doing the road on buses almost year-round. But, by the late 80's it was over; the Final Curtain on an ensemble style that started in the 30's. Sure, you got Maria Schneider, John Labarbera and several other noted big band composers and leaders -- and some fantastic resident big bands in Europe like WDR (God love Europe; they still support the arts), but they can't tour like the old days, stay local in their respective jazz cities or do residence stints at colleges and universities. So, Snarky has those arranging and number of bodies akin to a big band by definition. Sometimes they sound like the smaller instrumented Brecker Brothers' stuff (I'll lay money Michael League listened to a lot of them -- as he should have), but his arranging goes far beyond the "Play intro, play head, solo, play head, play ending" structure typical of The Breckers and most small group jazz. Very good shit and I'm a big big fan!
@jazzfusioner9840
@jazzfusioner9840 10 лет назад
Mecaholic, excellent, and agree. I loved and followed Maynard Ferguson's 70's bands, the most exciting live gigs to ever witness. Pure energy coming off that stage. Bill Chase's group another outstanding big band although just (Blazing!) trumpets, but their charts and albums were compositionally excellent and quite varied. And at a stretch Pat Metheny when he orchestrates such great albums like "Secret Story". Snarky Puppy are one of the most exciting things to happen in music, bar none.
@Macaholic
@Macaholic 10 лет назад
Jazz Fusionner Same history here :) EDIT: BAH! I just reread my previous post and I'm repeating myself with the following: About the closest other group I'd compare these guys to -- though not this song in particular -- is The Brecker Brothers. I hear a similar harmonic approach.

Great use of bass clarinet and the flugelhorns, it gives the piece a much softer feel against the strings, creating wonderful contrasts within the album. Beautiful hint of tango in the solo and a very accomplished nod to Miles/Gil Evans from 3:18 onwards in the moorish segment. Love the way these pieces are blending so many musical styles and yet each has fantastic integrity in its own right.

Been listening to Snarky Puppy's music for a little over 5 years now (I wish I had been aware of their music long before that! LOL) and everytime I think they've reached their peak, they still manage to stun me with their following album. Most of the time, when bands produce albums at the rate Snarky Puppy's is releasing theirs, you find their ideas diluted along the way, too many songs sounding just the same... In few words I for one, never thought creativity gushing out at this speed and with this kind of quality would ever be possible. I am so glad to be wrong. Snarky Puppy is just an amazing band and I just can't get enough. Anybody who has a chance to catch them live, better not miss it because they're as talented as what you can see on these videos plus you will get the adrenalin and the excitement on top of this... The cherry on the cake...

Incredible group. I just found out about them. I'm AMAZED I did not know about them before.Take Weather Report, Return to Forever, Peter Gabriel, Sting, McCoy Tyner, Miles Davis, Pink Martini,Procol Harum, King Crimson, AND Emerson,Lake and Palmer and you throw in Thelmonius Monk, and this is what you get, man I feel better already. I think I must now go play my drumzz. now. :)
