He wasn't even supposed to play on these sessions! He got the call at the last minute because the drummer who was supposed to play the sessions forgot to renew his passport and couldn't fly to Amsterdam. Larnell had almost no time to prepare! drummerszone.com/news/article/on-stage-6-12488/6/larnell-lewis-takes-care-of-snarky-puppy-dvd-recordings
I've been teaching music for almost 30 years. this music brings me to my knees. I am not worthy. fantastic. Larnell Lewis (drummer) is a god. and that keyboard solo? people will be studying and admiring that solo for the next 50 years... this is the new jazz....
The keyboard killer was Corey Henry...was a prodigy as a kid Personnel: Michael League - bass and composer Shaun Martin - keyboards Bill Laurance - Fender Rhodes Cory Henry - keyboards Justin Stanton - trumpet Mark Lettieri - guitar Bob Lanzetti - guitar (solo) Chris McQueen - guitar Nate Werth - percussion Larnell Lewis - drums (solo) Mike Maher - trumpet Chris Bullock - sax Bob Reynolds - sax Jay Jennings - trumpet
I've seen those videos so many times that I actually can tell that you copied and past this not from Lingus but from What About Me (Bob Lanzetti and Larnell Lewis siiiick solos)
To give you a sense of how mind-blowing Corey's solo was: That dude sitting next to him shaking his head in disbelief is Shaun Martin....five-time Grammy-winning Shaun Martin. Face-melting, level 3000.
It is not so surprising. There is a lot of this insanely good musicians in metal pulling some stuff at this level of musicianship nowadays and for quite a few decades now. A lot of the technical death metal musicians early on adapted a lot of stuff from jazz and have made it into the ridiculously complex music it is today. That's not the only genre, even some of the more mainstream newer metal bands have some fine musical skills.
@@anachronisticlaserbeams4820 I just saw Thank You Scientist a couple of months ago. They blew me away. Fucking tight band! Fun fact- they got their name from a line in the movie Half Baked
It's true..the man is an absolute genius. Criminally under appreciated. I have seen these videos dozens of times and I still can't believe how good he is. I get chills almost every time. This album is an unbelievable work of art
one of my fav parts of this video is when cory is coming out of his crazy keyboard solo and you can see the people in the back of the console room jumping up and down thru the window.
The drummer (Larnel Lewis) was a last minute replacement due to a passport issue with the regular drummer. He learned the song on the flight to the studio...
That song and the whole setlist for that live record, actually! He once told he only knew two of the eight "We like it Here" tracks.. And he had, like, a 7 hour flight without a drumset to learn it all. He's out of this world.
@@oborojin not to mention his outstanding solo parts... As in "What about me" And to continue on Larnell's incredible fast-learning skills : he shows it all in a Drumeo video, mastering a song's drumline with only one listening. Check that out! 👉 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vIW72VXMPHo.html
@@axelg5 been listening daily for a month, have just listened to 5 reaction videos, the whole album, and two more reaction vids....tearing up every reaction video but not the album....is interesting. We can almost relive the first listen with these reaction videos...I hope the powers that be keep them as obvious fair use....as i think it helps the bands as well
Its not just collabs. Snarky puppy is a rotating line band which means they never have the same players because people are always subbing in and out so the music varies wildly and its beautiful
So, funny story, one if my old groups opened for them in Bloomington, IN like 9 years ago at a tiny restaurant with a tiny stage and they were really good and we were not. Lol
This is elite tier musicians, this IS what heaven looks and sounds like for musicians. Been studying music production for 6 years and first time I listened to them, I almost broke my mouse..
If you loved this, I recommend checking out Vulfpeck! They're an instrumental jazz/funk band similar to Snarky Puppy, but trimmed down to guitars, keys, bass, and drums. Some of the tightest playing out there. I recommend the crowd-favorite "Dean Town" to get started. After that, "Cory Wong", "It Gets Funkier (I, II, III, or IV)", and literally any other song because those guys are incredible!
YEEEEESSASS YOU ARE THE MAN FOR THIS THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!! Please check out “What About Me,” “Shofukan,” “Outlier,” by them and please please check out Snarky Puppy and Lalah Hathaway (Donny’s daughter) doing a song called “Something.” I guarantee that you will be amazed by this group!
Dude, l love this band,, watched this performance so many times, it always brings tears of joy, but watching it with you brought even more! You nailed it, greatness! If you get the chance to see them live, do it! Keep up the good work, love your videos, they’re the best reaction vids on The Tube! Peace and love
I enjoyed watching you react EXACTLY like I did when I heard this the first time. I still get goose bumps. I've been playing keys for 60 years and I've heard a lot of great music. These guys are the cream of the crop man. Unreal. Epic, as you say.
Just so you know, Larnell Lucas, Edit: Lewis on drums, wasn't a regular member of the band at the time. Their regular drummer, Sput had a passport issue making it so he couldn't make this gig, so Larnell had to learn the songs in something like 3 days IIRC. The fact that he was able to keep up as hard as he did with Cory's mostly improvised solo is insane.
Except the number is NOT a solo, it's a full blown arrangement for jazz orchestra silly. The different soloists perform their own solos of course at the times predetermined. #eyeroll 😎
Many people would hardly believe this is all live, no fixes, no auto-tune. This is true excellence. And just when you think it can't get any better, it does. Also check out "I Asked" featuring Becca Stevens with Snarky Puppy.
I'm so glad you reacted to this! I had the same reaction as you, goosebumps and everything. Almost every time. I recommend you watch other performances from the "We Like It Here" DVD. What About Me or Outlier are my favorites.
What a feeling it must be to have a song come to life the way this one did. When Michael League wrote this song, I'm sure that what resulted from this performance far exceeded what he was hearing in his head when he imagined it complete. That is likely a once in a lifetime combination or writing, arranging, producing and spontaneous performance of generationally great musicianship. Michael League is in a very small group of the very best producers ever.
Finally!! Snarky Puppy is incredible man, definitely a band that musicians tend to flock to. Just insane musical ability and really good composing. The bass player, Michael League, is the band leader and composer for many if not most of SP's music. The final product is always a crazy collaborative effort from all these super talented musicians, but League plays a big part in how well-written many of these songs are. Fun fact, the drummer Larnell Lewis was brought in at the very last minute to fill in for SP's usual drummer, Robert "Sput" Searight (though he's sat in with SP a few times on tours). He basically learned all of the songs in the span of a few hours, then performed them live all week. "After a last moment call, Larnell arrived the next day at Amsterdam airport at 7:00 am. Heading straight for the studio to set up the drums, having an intense and sped up rehearsal session in the afternoon, and locking the nine tracks to be recorded for the dvd that very same evening. An enormous achievement considering the recordings covered four days: from Monday until Thursday with two shows a night, all being recorded for the upcoming Snarky Puppy dvd."
For others song by them where you can watch the live recording : Shofukan Thing of gold Bent nails What about me ? Jambone Sintra - Flight- Atchafalaya (with metropole orchest) Mr. Montauk But basically all their songs are really dope so... 🤷❤️
@@Ian-oe9xn yeah I just didn't wanted to list all the song cauz it would be too long. I just wanted to suggest some but obviously all others than that are highly recommended too !
My brother, as a musician and producer for over 45 years, I've consumed many of the 'reaction' series on RU-vid and I must say, yours are the finest...please keep up the outstanding work!
My buddy's brother is the Percussionist/leader/arranger. They are so good! One of the best keyboard solos ever...check out the band Ghost Note, a lot of the same players.
Your reaction was pretty much the same as mine when I first discovered Snarky Puppy: less delighted to discover new good music, but more OUTRAGED that NOBODY had drawn my attention to them before now!
So glad you did this song! When Cory started his solo and you were smiling, I thought, “J has no idea what’s coming. He has no concept of how hard he’s about to get hit! He’s about to have the stankiest of all stank faces.” Your reaction did not disappoint. lol
YES! You did the Puppy! I don’t know anyone else who has done a reaction to SP. Glad it was you. This extremely talented group of of musicians are all about playing for the love of it. It’s a joyous rabbit hole should you decide to go down it.
This is probably their peak performance. But also check out the one they do with Jacob Collier. It's pretty freaking epic as well. There are moments in that one where they are all looking at each other like, are we really doing this? The drummer here, BTW, isn't their regular. He came as a last minute replacement and did this on fairly short notice. He's a complete beast.
I first heard about Snarkly Puppy tonight in a Drumeo video with drummer Darnell Lewis listening to and playing along to Metallica for the first time. In the video he mentioned how much he loved Snarky Puppy, and in watching this video I see why - he's the drummer in this video!! Thank you for this. This is freaking awesome!
The song "Sleeper" from them would be my next recommendation. Shaun Martin (the keyboard player next to Corey) is featured pretty prominently and it's absolutely incredible.
Jamel, you said epic!, and couldn’t agree with you more! I’ve been a musician all my life and love all forms of music, and these guy’s are just phenominal. Thanks for posting, Nicky, Far Past Dark
You said it man! Still can't watch this without total amazement .. The groove in the beginning, so funky, so much great improvisation, that ending .. humbling ....
Reminds me a lot of Tower of Power. I played trombone in my high school band and our band director loved all the old jazz/funk from the 60s and 70s. I was a metalhead and punk rock guy, but playing all that old school music opened my world up so much man. Glad to see it touching you the same way it touched me. Music is truly the universal language.
When I heard the name of the band I thought it was going to be songs for little kids then I heard this. I was shocked that was great. Shot out to the band. Thank You for showing this. Shot out to you. Keep showing the great videos brother. Lovering it. Nothing but love for the channel. Good work my brother
Love your great reactions on great songs on your channel! So much good energy. When I first heard this song by Snarky Puppy I had to scrape my jaw of the floor. So much talent and taste. Still gets me every time. Cory Henry is the keyboard solo player, a living legend. Keep up your great reactions and good luck with the channel.
Incredible bit of info: at the time of this recording this actual piece was completely new to the band. They only got a rudimentary score a few days ahead and had like 2 days of rehearsal (not only this tune but an album worth of it) and do the arrangements. Actually, the drummer arrived on the day of the first show (they recorded several live shows). IIRC, this was recorded at the second show.
AND the drummer had NEVER played with the band before. . He flew in from the USA that morning and went straight to this recording session. Learned the tracks from tapes he listened to on the plane when he flew over to the Netherlands where this was recorded!! There's ALL KINDS of OUTSTANDING musical talent on the floor right there!!
Jamel, yes ! came to your channel months ago with rock/metal reactions hype; and here you are enjoying the Snarky Puppy ! Guess you'll love it, the keyboard solo will melt your brain !
You so much joy in your reaction, made me feel like I was hearing it for the first time again. Thank you sir. Also loved the way you said "uh oh" before the solo really kicekd off.. my thoughts exactly
The first time I heard this was them performing live at the Art Of Cool Festival in NC. After their performance I was an instant fan. The album this is on is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 from start to finish.
Also if you like this check out Return to Forever. This was one of the first super jazz fusion groups formed in the late 70's. It was Chic Cora, Lenny White, Stanley Clarke and Al Di Meola. Another good one is Weather Report. Jaco was beast on fretless bass. Gone to soon
This is generally how a Snarky Puppy concert goes down. It's insane talent. The solos played by Chris on saxophone and Cory on keys were improvised on the spot. In concert the musicians don't know who is soloing until a few bars before they play when Michael League gives them the nod. Keeps it fresh and exciting from show to show. Catch them live, it will change you.
Whoever asked for this to be played, thank you! They are EPIC! How about Snarky w Jacob Collier "Don't you Know"? Or anything else they do. Rabbit Hole...
I have never heard of this before but I liked the name. And WOW what a wonderful, funky, groovy sound !! So 70's. Reminds me of the group CHICAGO. I'm a fan !!
12:45 Jamel realizes he's truly had his mind blown. I feel you-I almost soiled my briefs the first time I heard Cory's solo. This whole album was a game changer for me, just ripped my head off.
For your reaction to my favorite band snarky puppy. New subscriber! Live in love live in peace grow in freedom. The keyboard soloist on lingus (this video) Cory Henry, been following him from the beginning, it's his slogan!
Jamel gets it ha ha. First time I saw this, I couldn't breath. sweating, goosebumps. everything. Didn't think this level of achievement was possible. The drummer is a monster and Cory Henry goes somewhere I wanna go when his hands are on the keys. There is hope for humanity after all. Amen.
This song is soooo bad ass. The interplay between Larnell and Corey is phenom. Even Corey’s buddy’s reaction says it all. Jamel your reactions throughout the song are straight up on point...”Bring it on bring it on...give me more.” This song is one to introduce to any music aficionado... it is balls out jamming. My buddy magic Mike in Ojai, CA turned me on to this one and I just keep paying it forward.
