your assessment of this song is spot on, it's written by one of the other trumpet players (Maher) and feels extremely personal, almost grieving or saying goodbye in a way. In contrast to Lingus or Shofukan, this is less of a "fun" song and more of a narrative. The keyboard soloist seems to be going through an arc and comes out at the end in a vibrant solo that leaps out over the horn section and almost screams with release.

WOOHOO! More Puppy!! :-) Shaun Martin was the keyboard/synth feature on this one. Yeah, he's got 4 Grammys, so........ :-) What a bunch of complete studs these guys are. SO much fun to watch and listen to. Edited to show Jozef's correction :-)

This was written on-site at the recording location by Maz Maher to feature Shawn Martin with the vocoder. Perhaps you can now understand how Shawn was taking off his headphones and shaking his head on “Lingus”… because Shawn believed he had the album’s feature track… until Corey started playing out of his mind on “Lingus”…

Keep going down this rabbit hole bro! Such an amazing collection of musicians. “What aAbout Me?” “Binky,” and “Outlier” have to be next! You will lose your mind! Also, check out a song called “Knot” by Chon. Love the reacts !

Absolutely, they are fan-freaking-tastic! I'm challenged to find musicianship that matches this caliber -- even Zappa would be blown away! Definitely intend to check out all of those. Thank you so much for checking it out and for the awesome recommendations! 😊

@@JonathonThamesMusic I'd also say don't feel boxed in to watching every Snarky Puppy video ever. You've found us (their fans haha) and we tend to shout out request because we love sharing the gospel of Snarky Puppy, however sometimes in these react videos we tend to hijack a channel in the comment section. We'll support you no matter what you choose to watch.

A significant departure from Snarky Puppy, but if you're not already familiar with them, maybe do a react to Mr. Bungle. "Air Conditioned Nightmare" or "Carousel" maybe.

Thank you so much for checking out the video and for the recommendations! I actually just heard (and reacted to) my first two Bungle tunes over the past couple of weeks, and am definitely intrigued after hearing "Carry Stress in the Jaw" to dive in deeper to their catalog. I've added both tunes to the list and look forward to checking them out soon!

There isn’t a “meh” song in this whole session, but I’d lean toward What About Me for your next one. Correction after seeing the end of the video: Outlier is great too. It’s all greatness. At some point you should check out their song You And I with Lalah Hathaway (sp?) and some of Larnell Lewis’ stuff too.

These are really relatable reactions from you, Jonathon. Thank you so much! I´ve had the pleasure of hearing Snarky live 3 times now, and everytime it was breathtaking! Funny sidestory, at their concerts there seem to be almost only Musicians, (or "Mucker" as we are called in Germany:) and everyone is singing along with the themes the band is playing , It´s an amazing experience! Hope to see them live again after all the Covid mess is over... Please also check out their latest record "Immigrance" from 2019 at some point. "Chonks" and "Even us" are fantastic pieces (along with all the other ones :D )

Check out Snarky Puppy's newer stuff, "We Like It Here" was 2014 and was before 3 of their 4 (yes, four) Grammy Awards. "Something" featuring Lalah Hathaway is a total mind-blowing R&B piece. "Live At The Royal Albert Hall" is pretty much all on RU-vid, although in pieces of varying quality. All of "Sylva" with the Metropole Orkest is also there. Several songs from "Culcha Vulcha" are there from performances at various venues, too. Just, please don't be doing the same damned things that every other "reactor" is doing...

Suuup, just in case you haven't got it yet, or other people are wondering: I hear it as a quite up-tempo 6/4 grouped mostly 4 + 2. There are a few moments where they accent weak beats or leave lots of space over a barline, but they don't really add any extra beats anywhere. Anyway, have a good'un!
@jabehauber
@jabehauber 3 года назад
Just a suggestion: since many in your audience have heard these tunes before, it's okay for you to interject your feelings or observations during a piece. We can tolerate that. I respect that you are respecting the artistry, but an insightful comment adds a bit of color to the reaction.
@JonathonThamesMusic
@JonathonThamesMusic 3 года назад
Thank you for checking out the video and for the thoughtful comment! I definitely appreciate the sentiment, and will take that into consideration in future videos. Usually, especially on a first time listen, I like to just sit back and listen to it all unfold, and feel more connected to it right off if I can listen to it without interruption, but it is good to know that if I do feel prompted to pause and comment on a particular section, I can do so without disrupting the audience's enjoyment of the song and the video, so thank you again!
@grelch
@grelch 3 года назад
I respectfully disagree, I think. What I like about Jonathon in particular as a reactor, is that he allows himself to submerge deep into the music. If you've never heard a song before and you comment during the music, in my experience you end up lifting yourself out of the moment. For me at least, I don't want to step out from the experience if I'm listening to the song. I want to feel it. Personally I like seeing other people experience a song for the first time without having them be interrupted by commenting. Different strokes I suppose.
