Snarky Puppy does most of their album recordings with a live audience in the room to have that live performance feeling
@mgbasinski
@mgbasinski 2 года назад
about this "recording in a studio for a live audience" thing, they book the place for multiple nights and do 2 sets a night, so for this album (We Like It Here) they had something like 8 takes of each tune (all live, no overdubs), and they then take the best one for the album / video. They did the same thing for the 2 records before this one (Tell Your Friends, and Ground Up), and in fact are supposed to do their NEXT album that way, it's scheduled for Dallas in March (I managed to snag a couple tix for one of the sets, hope it doesn't get cancelled....)

Yeah, you really have to respect the fact that Larnell learned all of these tunes on the plane ride over... that's insane.
@michaelgwfrogwelge

Actually, he had played three of the tunes with the band before, but he was the newest of the band's three drummers. The rest of the band was also new to the tunes, but were in Holland ahead of him and had a bit of rehearsal time. He flew over to replace "Sput" Searight, who found out his passport was expired just before leaving the states for the session. While the other guys were getting that little bit of rehearsal time, Larnell was listening to the composers' demo tapes while on his flight over.

Red Audio-technica studio headphones for musicians and wireless grey ones for audience are used in silent discos All top-notch musicians are part of the band, more a collective than a band actually

I am so happy....all of you musicians were BORN, I really do. I love you guy's parents, for birthing such amazing musician specialists into this mundane world of hell. Life became tolerable from just experiencing this intricate musicianship and master class contribution. I don't understand why music does to the brain and spirit as it does. But I NEED it and can't balance out my life without it. It's another language another form of LOVING someone if thee creators want it to be. For my mental health.....please stay safe and healthy.

Michael League (bassist) is the leader of the band; Cory Henry and Shaun Martin (keyboards); the horn section (I don't know their names) are members. I haven't seen another drummer with Snarky, but I think that because they're other drummer got sick (or something) they called in Larnell. If I'm not mistaken Larnell's been playing with them since. All three of the guitarists are part of the band, and the string section and the percussionist are part of the band. And I can tell you, brother, I haven't heard ANYTHING they've done that I haven't LOVED IT!!!! I mean NO THING!!!! Also, it's my opinion that, Snarky doesn't sound ANYTHING like Dirty Loops. And I love both of these bands/orchestra!!!

Michael League on bass, keyboards Bill Laurence, Shaun Martin and Cory Henry; keyboard/trumpeter Justin Stanton; trumpeters Jay Jennings and Mike "Maz" Maher; sax players Chris Bullock and Bob Reynolds; guitarists Bob Lanzeti, Mark Lettieri, and Chris McQueen; percussionist Nate Werth; and drummer Larnell Lewis were ALL members of the band. The string quartet was hired for the session. Drummers Robert "Sput" Searight and Jason "JT" Thomas, percussionists Keita Ogawa and Marcello Woloski, and keyboardist Bobby Sparks, II were also members of Snarky Puppy who were not on this session. Violinist Zack Brock had left to play with Stanley Clarke, but has since returned to the band. Cory Henry has since left for a solo career and also leads the band The Funk Disciples. Sput Searight also left, and he and Nate Werth (still in the band) co-lead Ghost Note; Jamison Ross replaced him.

If you check out their early videos, namely the Tell Your Friends album, they always had an in-studio audience all decked in headphones. They kept this trend going and come to think, I never really seen another band do this type of thing or at least do it before them.

The band has a rotating group of members. The bass player Michael League is the band leader and one of the founders, the majority of the members met while the were students at UNT

The band is a collective so when you see them live you never know what musicians will appear other than the core. All members have to know all parts because when they play live a simple nod of the head may determine who solos. You can hear the same song from various live performances and it is never the same.
@jamesoconnor9027
@jamesoconnor9027 2 года назад
Because in a studio different instruments have a different range acoustically so if they didn't have the headphones, one side of the room would be hearing the sound differently than the other, and when the owner of the studio bought the headphones he bought them in bulk and got a shitload of the same ones. The audience members are people close to the band.
@jabehauber
@jabehauber 2 года назад
Firstly, the synths are direct to board - no amps - so you wouldn't be able to hear them otherwise. Second, with such a large room and no monitors, you'd be getting uneven sound delivery from your bandmates. It should be noted that the engineers said their heaviest lift is just micing everything,. They set the levels to unity and the band members control the dynamics.
@mgbasinski
@mgbasinski 2 года назад
and then they can mix it later - I'm sure that the mix we hear on this recording is not what was in anyones cans on the day....

Live album recording with an audience. They do this with a lot of their albums. Headphones so everyone can hear the master mix, although the musicians might have a custom mix to better hear certain parts.

So their original drummer had let his passport expire and couldn’t make the trip for this album recording session so they called Larnell 2 days before to replace him. Larnell learned the whole set on the plane over to Amsterdam and had basically 1 practice session before they started recording…. This whole session is on RU-vid broken up by song. I encourage you to react to more of them…. Lingus, Shofukan, Sleeper and some of the best ones.

Snarky is so good man. Larnell steals the show a little on this one. Maybe check out one of the songs from the Sylva album with the Metropole Orkest. What a production. The song The Curtain is great, but they all are. ALSO, if you haven't heard Thank You Scientist I highly recommend checking them out. Kind of a prog rock jazz fusion mix with some brass and electric violin. It's always tough for me to pick a song but FXMLDR seems to be one that a lot of folks like watching ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rxrz6RPSww0.html

Since you like Dirty Loops and Snarky, but you come from a metal background, maybe you should check out Norwegian "Leprous". They come from Prog-metal but is evolving into more fusion-progessive influenced - something totally their own thing. And since you appreciate drummers with some skills, their drummer Baard Kolstad is an absolute beast of both black-metal drumming and fusion-prog polymetrics and poly-rhythms. (You could consider checking him out on youtube - he does makes some pure "play-through" of Leprous songs, allowing people appreciating a bit of original and high-end drumming to watch how amazingly complex his drumming is) Here is a live-take from 5 (?) years ago (where both the old drummer and the current (Baard) are both playing ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1QKx_2yg4cU.html&ab_channel=InsideOutMusicTV
