Join me as I step away from my usual tools and dive into a pre-alpha build of Divi 5.
In this video, I explore Divi 5's new interface, which is still in development, and provide a hands-on review without the ability to preview code quality or actual site output.
I'll discuss:
- The changes to the Divi interface and how it compares to Divi 4
- The docking and floating panel options for a more desktop app-like experience
- Accessibility concerns with colour contrast in different modes
- The responsiveness and speed of the interface
- The quirks and potential improvements in the UI/UX design
- Features like layout addition, layers, wireframe view, and more
- The breadcrumb navigation for easier access to nested elements
- The potential learning curve for Divi 4 users transitioning to Divi 5
I also cover the interface's speed and how it feels closer to a desktop application than a browser-based one and share some nitpicks about the current state of the pre-alpha build.

Thanks for checking out this update. I’m a very satisfied Bricks user. Came from Beaver Builder to Elementor to Oxygen and finally to Bricks. I don’t plan on switching from Bricks but still find it interesting to see what other builders/themes are doing.

Thanks for covering Divi 5 Paul 👍 I was all in on Divi along with Divi Engine for a couple of years but now using Bricks.

I think they did an impressive job in keeping their existing users somewhat "in the loop" by allowing the classic Divi "blocks" via the wireframes. I'm sure this was a massive undertaking, but like you I never liked working with Divi. I'm sure their core user base will probably be happy with this, but it will be very hard for them to convince the Bricks users to give this a serious try (for example). They surely have the marketing budget and name, so who knows, I do wish them all of the best and I applaud their work because it must have been MASSIVE to rewrite the entire foundation.

Happy to see how DIVI is trying hard to stay in the market. The speed of the builder seems really fast now, I first open the demo in my mobile because not at my desktop, and it as amazingly fast on my mobile too!! It shows that it really use less recourses as I understand. I'm happy to see that they didn't left the customers with old version like some other builders and say goodbye, or say if you want the new builder this is our new brand/product that you need to buy. I think this is very important to see this big and costly decision. So much valuable for me. My biggest concern is that does Divi continue to give features to implement only to the their market and add-on makers like now ?! which is very very annoying for me. Or they make a Divi core itself a powerful page builder which can compete with others like bricksbuilder? Features like advanced header builder with all different needed elements and features, advanced query builder, class first approach, nestable elements, advanced conditions, and so on. I hope they show their roadmap to us and to developers, so both sides can plan to what they want to do/expect with Divi in future months/years.

I really like the modern, clean look. Could use a few improvements, but it's 100% one of the better builder interfaces IMO.

Someone requested on WP Git to make the side panels resizable, like in this demo. The reaction was, 'Hold your horses!' we'll make one side resizable, then get feedback. In other words, wait several months to make more than one incremental UI change. There's a bunch of UI improvements here, all at once, and I think that holistic approach produces a greater coherence.

Great overview mate... I do like DIVI as a tool, but the new UI design and performance boost will be very welcome. In my transition away from Elementor, I think Bricks will be my go-to builder, but DIVI will remain as a solid alternative when the appropriate projects arise.

I still have an LTD for Divi. Haven’t used it in a hot minute due the shortcode issue. However, I’ll be interested in seeing how it performs since they are removing the shortcodes and outputting to html. Have to wait and see how it operates under a full site load. Have to give Elegant Themes props, as they’ve been in the game for a while. I can appreciate them taking their time to release this so they don’t have to go back and remedy a bunch of bugs like so many other page builders have to do when they push out a release to quickly before thoroughly testing it out.

Doubt I'd go back, but I'm rooting for Divi. It was the first page builder I ever used and I left years ago due to legacy code slowing the site down. Unlike other page builders I've left due to feature bloat, bad support, or them throwing ads all over premium software.

What I am interested in is frontend advantage when it comes to speed. In January I've seen good old modules ttf flying around so I guess they're so much focused on the backend experience that they'll forget about the frontend. Divi is too much dev oriented and on providing the "masterpiece" making for site owners and agencies. But the real receivers of the whole thing are VISITORS. Then: you still will not be able to leave Divi at some point - they decided to stick settings and content(!!) into JSON objects and save them as post_content (like Elementor does). So switching away from Divi means: loosing all content. I left Divi for reasons of constant disappointments regarding speed. Won't go back.

I completely agree with your perspective regarding "VISITORS." "stick settings and content(!!) into JSON objects and save them as post_content (like Elementor does)". Could you please recommend another builder that won't cause me to lose content when switching? ✌🙂

Thanks for the alpha review, I know virtually nothing about Divi, starting to look at alternatives to Elementor Pro. I am getting daily ads popping up in the editor pushing their ai and img opt add ons. intrusive and really showing utter contempt to their client base. Hope you will do a review someday of the Droip builder. cheers

Don't get me wrong, it looks great. But I feel like it's the same old Divi with a UI overhaul. If Divi could adopt the capabilities of Bricks and the UI of Cwicly, it might just convince me to go back.

Actually, no, if you're a Divi 4 user, you'll find this just fine - even easy. It's your unfamiliarity with Divi that is the root of some of your comments. When you get used to Divi and understanding the interface, some of your comments would disappear, I think. This, so far, is 100% going in the right direction and adding SO MUCH usability improvement even though they are not going to initially make any new functionality. My BIGGEST concern is the migration process. THAT needs to be flawless!

Not sure why they call the structure panel "layers." They're not layers. And CSS has two different layer-based concepts, so it creates additional confusion for seemingly no reason. I wish page builders would be more careful with how they name things. All-in-all, this version of Divi feels like a huge miss. They rebuilt the entire thing from the ground up, but didn't really bring anything special to the table with it. It's still Divi. It's still really bad. And from what I've heard, the DOM output isn't any better. Did they check a single majorly important box with this? I can't think of one.
@SigururHolmGunnarsson
@SigururHolmGunnarsson Месяц назад
To be fair, the Divi team has always stated clearly that Divi 5 would not have any new features. Divi 5 is all about rewriting the page builder from the ground up. AFTER Divi 5 is released, they promise to add a lot of new features. So in all fairness, it is too soon to say this is “a huge miss”. I have used Divi for many years and like many things about it, but also realize that Divi is far behind modern builders like Bricks at the moment. p.s. I LOVE your tutorials and have recently jumped into working with Bricks and ACSS. I am still routing for Divi though, and you should also :). Divi has a massive user base and if Divi could evolve to the point it could incorporate ACSS that would be great for both users and your product.

Who tf calls "layers", Structure Panel? If you come from a Design Background/ UI Designer. We all know what layers means. So, I think they absolutely nailed it by naming it layers.

@@SigururHolmGunnarsson No new features is fine, but what about the opportunity to dramatically clean up the DOM?
@Gearyco
@Gearyco Месяц назад
@@shanto_asif I don't know if you noticed, but design and dev are two completely different things. And dev tools are NOT design tools and shouldn't be used or interpreted or confused as design tools. Devs use dev tools, so the labels need to make sense to devs. Period.
