Sneaker wave on Oregon coast, October 11, 2014

The National Weather Service had issued a "High Surf" warning for waves around 18' along the beaches of the Oregon coast for Saturday so I decided to go and shoot some video and pictures. The NWS also mentioned the possibility of 'Sneaker Waves'. I got a little too close for comfort to one of them. For best quality, click on the second icon "Settings" and select 720p and then click on the third icon to select 'Theater Mode' for a larger view.

Had one take me and a buddy out a ways. He started to cry and I started to laugh. Reflex for me. I told him to be calm and swim diagonally. Took 1/2 mile (that's a LONG SWIM!) But we got to shore. Scared me good. He asked that I don't tell anyone about him crying. I kept my word but back at camp we were DONE. I took a 1 hour shower (haha I went to sleep on a bench I pulled into the hot shower) went back and slept without eating. The parents knew something was up and they asked but I told them it was a long hike. Wiped out. It was fortunate we were both very athletic doing Triathlons and things of that nature otherwise I'd not be here writing this. Respect the ocean 🌊.

@@Grateful2Exist iirc, it's because of the rip tides that are often accompanying sneakers. Rip tides are strong undercurrents that drag you out further, and because they're so strong, trying to seim against them will tire you out and kill you. Likewise, swimming with them will only drag you out further. Instead, you swim along the shore line until you're out of the rip, and then it's safe to head to shore.

When I was four years old we were at the beach in San Francisco. I was hit by a "sneaker wave" from behind. I just remember everything getting dark and all this sand swirling around and stuff. Then a hand snatched me up from behind. It was my dad. After making sure I was okay, he said to me, "I thought I told you never to turn your back on the ocean!" After that I heeded his warning.

I got washed out to sea by a sneaker like this one, pretty close to this very spot about 1959; i was 6 years old and my folks weren't paying attention to their 5 kids running wild on the beach like they should have been. Fortunately, my dad was able to retrieve me from the water. To this day I remember be spun around by the water.

Took an oceanography class decades ago in Junior College.The instructor explained to us that there could be 2 different storm fronts pushing waves toward the same beach at the same time. Most of the time these waves are at different cycles or wavelenghts but every so often, these waves will coincide. When this happens. the waves will add up and be twice as big. This is where the random sneaker waves come from. He said sometimes you can even count them and you can get the number that they will coincide.

This may have been a tiny sneaker wave, but when I was little my grandma, cousins and I had to outrun one and barely made it. My cousins pulled me up on top of a dune (when those were still around) but my grandma ended up pinned against the dune by the wave. We watched in horror as it got higher and higher but luckily it only went to her chest then stopped. Still very lucky it didn’t pull her back out though. My cousins and I easily would have been underwater and fighting a current with that wave. Sneaker waves aren’t a joke. Never turn your back to the ocean.
@bequieter1103
@bequieter1103 5 лет назад
You don't fight a current! You swim diagonally with it in the direction you want to go. This is why people drown. They swim against it instead of with it. Its seawater. Very buoyant. If you get tired you float on your back. If you can't tread water for 30 minutes effortlessly you have no business swimming in an ocean. Currents can take you places and you have to go with the flow until you can calmly swim back in.

My father, sisters and I were out with our uncle, fishing for salmon and ling cod outside the Rogue River bar when the swells went from 6 feet to 25 feet. It was not gradual and it worried the adults quite a bit. Getting back into Gold Beach was interesting and I would imagine that the effect on the beaches north and south of the river was dramatic. The ocean is not tame and people who don't pay attention when they are on the shore or out on a boat or ship can get into trouble easily.

One thing I remember swimming in the Pacific Ocean beaches is sometimes you get these type of waves that appear to look like they are safely a far enough distance from you then they hit you like you are 20 feet in the water from the beach. It is a frightening occurrence. The only other time I experienced this danger was swimming in a Lake Michigan beach near a rip current. You can be the best swimmer in the world and still drown in these type of waves and rip currents. They move faster than world record swimmer Michael Phelps. You don't fuck around with these type of waves and currents.

those weren't sneaker waves, that was extremely high surf, even on small days when waves are shoulder high you'll have a clean up set infrequently that is overhead, 7-8ft face instead of 4 to 5ft face for 5 or 6 waves, even in a set the middle to last wave can be quite a bit larger than the first wave or two on average 10 to 15 percent larger. So when you have a 40ft face a cleanup set could be 50-70ft probably at least once or twice every hour or two which is a large volume of water pushed onto a beach that is already dealing with outflow problems, a true sneaker wave in that context would be 80 to 100 feet at least, caused by a different phenomina which is much rarer the combination or two more waves moving in similar but ultimately different directions that significantly increase the wave height as opposed to doubling up (where one wave breaks inside another wave), somewhat similar to the familiar backwash effect at the wedge in Newport.

On the one hand, the proposed mechanism for these being distinct from tsunamis makes a sort of sense. On the other hand, I find it a bit suspicious that the number one location mentioned for their occurrence is from northern CA to southern BC, which faces the extremely seismically-active Pacific Ocean, and another geologically-active place, Iceland. Either way, it's apparent one needs to be very wary when far out on the long shallow beaches like this. Thank you for the video.

plus we live in a quake prone region with a tsunami producing subduction zone offshore from BC all the way down to WA, OR, and Northern CA. It's an active quake fault that rips in a magnitude 9.0 quake every 200 years and we're 117 years overdue. Plus small and moderate quakes, magnitude 2 to magnitude 5.7 happen very often on this fault and do often produce small to medium sized tsunamis so I wouldn't be surprised if this IS a tsunami.

At min 1.10 u see the tide reach the shore but a small wave speed up arching sidewards. I seen this happening today on my beach and looked scary. Wave would hit then all of a sudden a small wave picked up speed sidwards in the shallow

Im sorry.... I just moved to Oregon from the gulf coast; and I’ve seen a few videos of these, and heard tell of “giant waves” but this looked mild to me? I don’t know what the heck I’m supposed to be so scared of!

These are no joke. Was at Long Beach, WA. a couple of seasons ago which is just up the coast and one of the locals there told me that a month prior a little kid had been playing in ankle deep water and a sneaker wave came up, pulled it out to sea. Father went in after it and he was lost as well. Coast Guard search of the area afterwards did not find them.

They say, who ever 'they' are, that every seventh wave is the biggest in each set. So the sneaker must be the seventh seventh?

Makes you wonder if sneaker waves are actually little tsunamis? Something like a small earthquake somewhere in the middle of the ocean. Not big enough to be felt anywhere, but enough to cause a little wave somewhere.

I agree. When I was young, we spent a lot of time rock-hounding at the beach. My sister was almost washed out when a sneaker wave caught her at Cape Meares. (It was really too dangerous to be out there with 3 little kids, but we did find a lot of agates.) When I was on vacation in Hawaii with a friend in my late teens, I was standing in the water approximately waist-deep, facing Waikiki. I turned and there was a wave curling over my head. From out of nowhere. Later on, on a trip to Greece, suddenly caught in a sneaker from out of nowhere. We suspected small earthquakes in the last two instances. We didn't feel anything, but had no other explanation.

All the water was gone. There’s your first clue. It’s all pulled out by the power of the waves to make the sneaker bigger. I’ve been on the beach on the east coast in Delaware and Jersey when a sneaker comes and chases everyone back in the dry sand.

Most people call a sneaker wave a mini tsunami

And this would be the reason why, in all of my trips to Oregon, I have never once ventured out onto a beach anywhere. And with my bad luck, one of these things would hit the moment my feet touched the sand!

Have had to run myself from a sneaker when I was younger. Luckily there was no driftwood in front of the head dune or I might have been crushed climbing over.

It's also a dumb idea to mis-spell the word "shoot". ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-87NlwSVnevI.html

Tsunami like, but they did run at an angle away from the wave. Tsunami wave come from every direction, and keep coming..... etc.

Sneaker waves can trigger epileptic seizures. This video is evidence of that. I'm glad he survived.
