Lol I was thinking the same thing!! God I spend way to much money at that place!!!! When I first started shopping with Sephora it was 2017 I believe within 5 months I was Rouge so I am Rouge until December 2021! insane when they get people they got them!! Until they realize all the shit they could have done with that hard earned money they've spent at sephora.... Me!!!! 🙋
Yeah like doesn’t ulta have a better reward system and more (and better) sales? I wouldn’t say that they’re necessarily that amazing when it comes to customer rewards but the video acts like they are.
Probably a good idea to put a "hygiene tip" near those lipsticks and make sure Q-tips are well stocked. Also need to educate the staff on how to approach and engage with customers to teach them.
"sneaky" selling just means actually providing good in person selling services- make up removers, samples, color id. it's just good business. not too sneaky.
yeah people should actually be glad they don't have to go to department stores with snobby sales assistant and shitty service. But people have to complain about everything these days ......
@@kaizey I use to work for Sephora and as an ex employee I actually think their business model and goals have always had the best interest for the customers in mind. While of course increasing sales is always a primary motive, I think their goals do focus on making sure a customer gets what they really want as the end result, whether it starts with makeup and ends with skincare. That was a value I as a person always held dear and was proud to represent in their culture.
This ! I got color IQ'ed and tried foundations recommended by it. I look like I went to the cheapest spray tan place got the opposite undertone 3 shades too dark. Might as well recommend me a blue foundation you damn color IQ.
Lmao the staff at Sephora in my country look at you like you're a thief and all they do is stay behind your back and stare unpleasantly if you try more than 1 product
Omnisis it could be racial profiling but also they’re trained to do that. I don’t think I’m getting racially profiled but I’m still uncomfortable when they follow me and I wished they’d stop following me 😭 I’ll ask for help if I need it.
Alice Oh I think it is. Every time I go with my sis or any family member, we only get followed. Always a worker peaking at us and stuff, the only black people in the store. They already help us, and then keep following us. This happens to a lot of black women at Sephora. Next time this happens to me I’m hurting someone’s feelings idgaf
@@radhiadeedou8286 Personally when I go shopping I prefer using cash over credit cards, so I can see how much I spend (feel how much money I will lose) and probably reconsider a purchase. Also really think what you consider a need if you have many products. Lastly dont fall int the trap of sales, buy sth you see yourself using up . Hope that helps 😁😁
@@ioannaioannidou9644 you're right I always use cash too. I guess my problem is when I'm out of town, there's something about trips and vacations that makes money feel different and there's always a stupid reason to buy like we don't have this product back home or whatever, then I go home and realize all the mistakes I made
And you can stack $20 off as well as $3.50 off $15 coupons on top of store sales (but not for clearance). I only shop there when I have a coupon, and I always get makeup less than I would at Walmart. And I also get extra points. Then when I redeem points, I can also stack them with coupons. I got Colourpop's Frozen 2 collection for $0. Then I got my birthday gift for 1¢.
ρεαcн•cαɱραηεllα you should’ve gotten your birthday gift for free not for a penny. i’m not sure if that matters to you or not but the birthday gifts are rung up by someone as a penny or free and if they aren’t then the manager sometimes has to come and change it to free.
As a sephora associate I can't agree more. Plus what people don't also realize is that we struggle from trying not to buy the latest product, especially when we are around it from 6 to 8 hours every day. I can tell you this, 90 percent of my pay sadly goes straight back to sephora.
Youn Bora not mine. And I work at Sephora too. My store gives a lot of gratis and I’m not that insane about it. As soon as the uniform comes off so does the makeup craze.
@@saduu94 hey girly. I'm so glad you brought that up. I almost forgot to mention that I work inside a jcpenney sephora and our gratis is definitely depressing. We are lucky it we get more than 4. And recently our gratis person hasn't given us anything for the past 3 months, I heard this has never happened before, but I'm definitely sure that's why me and the other girls end up splurging sometimes on a lot of the products. Then again every store is a case by case.
Youn Bora aw man ): I’ve heard about the Sephora inside JCP stores have it rough. Try to switch to a free standing Sephora I swear they’re so much better. No white tile 😅 hugs!
Youn Bora just FYI I worked at a SiJCP and transferred to a freestanding Sephora and had the worst experience they treat you like they are better than you bc you came from a JC Penney Sephora the discrimination was so bad that after I put my 2 weeks in I called corporate. I explained everything to them and they overnighted a debit card to the Sephora store with 2 weeks worth of pay. I didnt even have to work the rest of the 2 weeks and they told me to feel free to apply to Sephora in the future. You should have seen the looks on my managers faces when I came in the next morning to pick up that debit card. Joke was on them in the end 🤪
I used to be so addicted to Sephora and literally any make up store but I'm 18 now and I don't remember the last time I've been to one. I realised how much I've been spending on make up considering the fact that they're pricier over here where I live and now all I have is a small make up bag I can bring everywhere. Most of them are drug store make up. A lot of women these days are tempted to get anything from a make up store because of what the media tells them. The unexplainable hype towards highlighters? The idea of wanting to own each eyeshadow shade ever invented? Sure, make up is art but it really isn't practical for everyone on a daily basis. Most of us women just need a bit of coverage and colour to glow from within and not pounds of 'instagram' make up. But at the end of the day, we all have our own choices and decisions to make. So YOU DO YOU but if you're doing it for something else then girlll let's save up that money.
Lol I'm the opposite, when I was in hs/young teen I never really bought a lot of makeup let alone Sephora makeup. It's not until now that I'm older and have a job that I actually go and spend money there. but I try not to spend a lot, I only tend to buy things I need (like skincare lol) so yeah, I agree, most women don't need a bunch of makeup, just a few essentials 👍
Yeah the only “high end makeup products” I buy are just eyeshadows and concealer but other than that the drug stores way better a lot more choices cheap and usually less ingredients
I’m fully aware of all these facts and I am a frequent Sephora customer. It doesn’t bother me that their enhanced experience typically leads to better sales for them. Sephora (and Ulta) is fantastic, they have a very liberal return policy and they give you many opportunities to perfect your purchase needs. As a consumer it is my responsibility to shop responsibly, recognize cost per volume, research ingredients and product quality and determine the needs of my beauty routine. Their rewards program can be hit or miss sometimes but I typically will purchase my go to products when I am able to pick up a couple of items with my reward points. Their free 2 day shipping subscription is pretty awesome too because I can replenish my skin care items without having to meet a minimum purchase amount to earn free shipping.
Leah Segura I agree, and even sometimes the times where you get a birthday gift or a gift for so many points aren’t so bad. Honestly though, where else am I gonna get good makeup??
Linda Ponce exactly! Like I love minis of products that I want to try or maybe wouldnt buy for myself, but they’re so bad! I don’t want a foundation sample that’s not even enough to cover my face and probably not my shade.
For anyone curious the whole putting products that they want to sell on the top shelf is actually used in basically every physical retailer that has shelves. we are more drawn to eye level and slightly below. This is why in grocery stores you see more childlike cereals on the bottom shelves and more practice cereals on the upper mid shelves. Stores put a ton of effort into the placement of their products and they often use a planogram to plan out where everything is going to go. Companies even make deals with certain retailers and pay significantly more for eye level placement. its really interesting the physiology behind placement and the impact it has on our purchasing habits.
Oddly enough, the longer I hold onto something as I'm walking around the store, the higher the chance I'll realize I don't actually need it and put it back.
Come on....Business Insider you completely forgot the MOST OBVIOUS part of why Sephora has exclusive merchandise: Sephora is owned by LVMH Group, and LVMH Group also owns multiple beauty brands including Benefit cosmetics, FENTY, Dior beauty, Kat Von D, Ole Henriksen, Fresh skincare. Also IF Sephora is really "retailer of the year" why did Sephora fail in the UK 🇬🇧?....
I’ve never understood the hype behind limited edition beauty products. When I buy a beauty product, my plan is to use it almost indefinitely. Like, why would I buy a limited edition moisturizer?
Meanwhile at shoppers drug mart you now can redeem points for Botox, laser hair removal and more whereas Sephora all the good point perks sell out and the rest are a joke.
0:38 0:56 The clips of people applying the tester lipstick and foundation on their faces gave me anxiety... I don’t even touch my face while I’m out without cleansing wipes out of fear of breakouts. Sephora actual gives out so little samples with purchases though and they’re overpriced compared to a lot of online retailers. I think I only go into sephora specifically for the item I am looking for if I’m in a rush and don’t want to wait for shipping so I hardly ever browse while I’m in there. I’ve seen people leave with amounts of makeup that cost like 4 ipads worth of money
The last time I went to sephora I asked for a light spf cream for the body, the sales assistant comes back with this $21.5 tiny eye cream size product and begins telling me how well it performs. I’m like sis🙂 I asked for a body spf and what you’re trying to sell is obviously not what I want. I gave the same description of what I wanted to the pharmacy right around and got exactly what I wanted, in waterproof/ non waterproof, cream, spray, all sorts of volumes and sizes and ended up paying $9, which was the price I expected. Another thing I don’t enjoy is how the s.a treats people differently after inspecting them from head to toe. I was testing out the fenty highlighters with a friend and those girls were just there, watching me, making me feel more or less quite uncomfortable
there's different "spotlight" products that Sephora has to try and sell every week which is why I would take any product recommendations with a grain of salt. Also I agree with rudeness of some employees i alwayssss get treated differently when I shop glammed up/no makeup at Sephora. Employees bend over backwards for me when I have a full face on but barely acknowledge me when I have nothing on (which is ironic bc that's when I spend the most money anyways)
But why would you look for a body sunscreen at Sephora? Unless you're looking for a specific brand that only Sephora carries, any basic drugstore body sunscreen would be sufficient
I never buy things from sephora bcos their employees follow me everywhere. The idea of someone following me everywhere when I'm looking for the products that i want to purchase was so uncomfortable. So i ended up leaving the store empty handed.
This video was poorly researched. In response to the first claim of keeping almost all products in store - in actuality, they don’t keep 25-30% of their SKUs in the majority of stores, they’re available online only. Second huge missed point is their flash shipping program. They introduced this in 2015, offering two day shipping for $15 per year. By being one of the first brick and mortar retailers to build out this channel, they became the “amazon prime of beauty products,” guaranteeing consumers can get their items faster than any of their competitors.
Oh my God Sephora shipping is insane and I love it no place compares except MAC Cosmetics they have Sephora type shipping most the time LOL!! But to be honest that's why I always mostly only shop sephora is because I know I'll get my stuff fast!! They at least did that right!! Although sometimes they Slack & get all my money it's still my number one 😆 retailer!!!
"It feels like it's already in your possession and you need to purchase it" sounds wrong on so many levels. Holding & testing is just part of the whole decision making process. If you have more time it just gives you more confidence to purchase because you've spent more time affirming your decision.
Honestly, this just sounds like every makeup store in Korea... You want samples? Go shopping in Seoul.. you're have enough samples to last you for months haha
Every time I walk into Sephora it seems so expensive. Like one jar of cream is $70. I do most of my skincare shopping off Amazon, Walmart, and CVS. I’m not paying more than $30 for a makeup or skincare product.
I've only been to Sephora around 4 times and it was mostly to get a free makeover, bought 2 items with my own money and got freebies afterwards. My mum really wanted this eyes shadow tin, it only had one color for $46 and she quickly put it down
Also the staff being present and knowledgeable usually keeps me going back. I usually look for specific ingredients and product formulas and Sephora staff can help. I cant get that at other retailers usually.
They also let you return things if it doesn't suit you which is one of the major reasons I like to shop there. If I don't end up liking the foundation I can return it, while at other department stores you can't do.
Sephora use to give 3 samples with an online order, BUT they got super cheap and took it down to 2 samples after soooo many years. Plus, they changed their return policy from 60 days to 30 days so i guess they had been having problems.
I like sephora and Ulta for different things. Like, if I want to try a new product, I always go to Sephora. No offense to anyone who works at Ulta, but anytime I have someone shade match me at Ulta, I s2g they must be on drugs. They put me 3 shades dark and with an orange undertone and try to rush me out the door. Sephora is pretty good and their employees (in my experience) will spend a long time making sure the shade and undertone is right, using several different types of lighting. However, if I know what I want I'll go right into Ulta. So basically it depends on if I have to interact with staff or not, lol.
The best way to not overspend is to know what you need before you go into a store and stick to buying just that. Research it first if needed. And once you’re in the store, shop fast so you don’t get tempted to buy anything else.
The best thing about Sephora is their amazing return policy coupled with free samples. I actually end up spending more money on drug store products because even if they're cheaper, you usually can't sample or return them and you end up wasting money trying products out. I only buy makeup a few times a year, and Sephora's policies ensure that whatever I've bought suits me and won't go to waste. It's worth it, imo.
When I was in Taiwan and Korea, it was pretty standard procedure to have sample containers and cleaning stations in stores. It was interesting to come back to the States and realize I couldn't easily try products before buying. I haven't shopped much at Sephora before, but now I want to check it out!
what shades do you use for olive skin? bc i also have sort of olive and they always match me to yellow. What shades do you personally use if its not too much to ask
Sofia I’m rather pale and most of the fair olive shades are too dark for me so I use golden/yellow shades that aren’t too peachy. I’m 120w in the abh luminous foundation.
Most of the high end cosmetics stores in America are like that to now. But Sephora was the first to do that in the states. Or at least the first to do it so successfully that everyone else did it too.
I worked for Sephora over 10 years ago and always said the LIGHTING can get the client to buy more, that light with those mirrors can make you see flaws you never noticed before. I’m surprised it wasn’t apart of this segment. And I know they’re aware of why others live in ulta. Bigger incentive, point system almost guaranteed to save money you can build up to. Mix of high end and low end. It’s the exclusivity that puts me in Sephora.
Items that contain more product cost less per product - that's not a secret, that's what every company does. How they really get you is by making you aware of it so that you'll be more likely to fork out 59$ instead of 25$ for something you might not even like, just because you seem to get a better deal. Buy the smaller product first to try it out, if you don't like it or don't use it often, your loss will be smaller, vs buying the large one and wasting more money. You can always get the better deal later if you wish, just make sure it's *really* the better deal overall.
