@@MS-hb3ol I travelled via London's Heathrow airport two months ago and I brought an empty bottle inside. Alas, there were no drinking fountains to be found. I asked different employees, all pointing to the washrooms. I had to buy one that cost 1.5 pounds. In Toronto where I started my flight, there were many drinking fountains around.
Random travel tips: 1. Pack your carry-on light. Pack only what you’re going to need/want on the flight, possibly some pyjamas, and living essentials in case your suitcase gets lost. 2. Unless you have specific needs (allergies, sensitive skin, etc.), you don’t need to pack your, large bottles of shampoo, conditioner, or lotion, given that you’re staying at a hotel. I’ve never been to a hotel where you can’t find these inside the bathroom. But make sure to check your hotel’s information, to see about supply. 3. Some airports I’ve been to allow you to bring your own food through security. Check the information about the airport, and see if there’s anything about bringing food through security. And if you bring food, make it a light, inexpensive thing, like a sandwich. That way, if it gets taken away at security, it won’t be a big waste on money. 4. If possible, have another family member, who isn’t going on the trip to take your car home from the airport, instead of paying for parking. If you don’t have anyone to take you to the airport, take a uber or bus. If your trip is very long, an uber is much cheaper. 5. Don’t save packing to the last minute. If your flight is in the morning, pack everything that you aren’t going to need to get ready that morning the night before, and pack the rest in the morning. 6. If you have extra space in your bag, put a few reusable bags in there. They help if you don’t have space in your suitcase for the trip home. Airlines usually allow something under the seat, and something in the overhead bin, so pack a reusable bag, and store it in the overhead bin if you can.
In the UK, you can leave your car in security parking lots for holidays one being purple parking which is significantly cheaper than parking in the airport itself. They also have free buses (if you paid for parking) to and from the airport so you wouldn't need to pay for transport
All i ever see is expensive wine bottles I would like to buy stuff. But I almost always have connecting flights I don’t wanna carry around extra stuff It’s mostly impulse things anyway
Cheap good headphone and sometime some watch... Jacket.... when it not discount...if you can not tell what to buy then just don't buy it... it not that hard...
My mom never let me get anything at the duty free when I was a kid, and tried to avoid spending at the airport, and warned me to do the same when I started travelling myself. To this day, I have not spent a penny at duty free.
I once had a dream that took that rather literally. After clearing security, I ended up in this huge complex of outdoor things, entertainment all over the place, no timekeeping devices, and impossible corridors that don't even show the planes, clearly meant to make you wander the airport for as long as possible, in hopes of getting you to shop. I liked that airport, but practically, I ended up missing my flight, and I didn't find my way out until I woke up.
Austin or whatever you want to call me , I’m glad someone else noticed this. Every video, it’s like he’s trying to tell me a secret and it makes me uncomfortable.

I went on vacation to Jamaica. Coming back my flight was delayed for 3 hours. The of the food prices had been inflated so it was $15 for a single burger at wendy's. I spent over $40 for 2 burgers, fries and drinks and I've never regretted anything more.
I pay £12 for fast track security, it allows me to arrive an hour before my flight time AND it skips the duty free section and takes you straight to the main hall upon finishing. Worth every penny.
Thankfully there are some very good products/services around like that that are a win situation for both parties. You enjoy a great service. Meanwhile, the company gets profit, and if you recommend the service to friends or relatives, it will mean more customers for the company, which means more profit.
Dangged skippy! We prepare very satisfiying ham/cold cut sandwiches and snacks before flying and keep them on our carry-on luggage, the secondary bag behind the front seat.
'@ gatwick and luton airport. they have you empty everything , water included before you cross any barrier. so unless you've have a copious meal before driving to the airport. you'll buy what they offer. i have only ever bought snacks and chocs once at the airport.
Some things I do to keep costs down at airports include not driving myself, but getting a ride, packing snacks in my purse, having my phone & kindle on me so I can entertain myself, and having my water bottle. I empty it before going into security then have either a restaurant fill it up, or just find a water fountain. I may look at some shops to pass the time, but I don't buy anything.
@@AG-tv7jd Nope. That's simply not how our brains function. You think an alcoholic wants to be an alcoholic? Obviously not. You think a heroin addict wants to suck dick for heroin? obviously not. And advertising is a trillion dollar industry with countless decades of research on how to bypass the awareness that knows it doesn't want to spend extra money on stupid shit.
My local airport has bottle fill stations and encourages people to bring bottles, they are also trying to promote small local business instead of major chains. I really like that they have a deal with the library that anyone can check out a library book for a vending machine you can use your existing library card or get a temp one from the machine and return the book when you get back from your trip. No more $20 books you will never read again.

I've been in an airport on my own twice and am proud to say all I did was buy a $5 bubble tea... it was nasty. I did check out the subway prices which were $1 more than I was used to.
we can all beat them to the punch by doing this: *eat before getting there *take an uber or the bus to avoid parking fees *book ahead (just got a $39 flight that's normally $400 by booking it 5 months in advance) *travel light (you only really need a backpack or a small carry on)
@@sr.luisraytraceiii2422 I'm really good at snagging cheap flights online. I recommend buying tickets directly from Google flights or Volaris airline. The trick is checking periodically. If it were possible I'd post a screenshot of my itinerary on here.
Yep, these scam tactics don't work for lower class folks cause we simply don't have the money in the first place. I flew once before, but had no pocket money to spend on any of this crud.
i fell into every trick. I really enjoy the display of merchandise, the lights, the way everything is set up. There was a massage place in LV and i said well might as well don’t want to be sore on the flight. I’m just fascinated with airports
Airports to the vendors. "Pay the ridiculously high lease" Vendors to customers "Buy our overpriced products so we can pay our landlord and still make a profit."
I waited over 3 hours for my laptop in a mall. I spent 90% of those hours daydreaming, 9% walking around the mall once, and 1% eating a 70-cent burger. Daydreaming saves money and kills boredom for real 😍
Planning on traveling next year after I graduate I’m bringing my own damn food and my own damn luggage because they not taking any dollar outta me besides my plane ticket 👎🏼
Just eat lots of shaved ice before your flight. The cold will offset any temperature that will be that day, you will stay hydrated longer, you'll feel really good for hours and you won't have to buy their stupid overpriced water. That's what I do before everything, gym, hikes, flights, boating, biking.
The solution is simple: pour out or finish the water before security, then refill it again once you are past it. I do this all the time and don't have to spend a dime.
When I was at Heathrow, they were selling luggage in the duty-free section ... never have I been more confused EDIT: I have never bought anything from duty-free, but I like to look around because some of the stuff they sell is, frankly, hilarious
I will buy from the duty free as I’m returning to the States from Canada, in MY car. I’m not buying anything in an airport duty free, I’ll have to drag it the whole rest of the trip!
Another reason they can charge so much is because you have no other option. Normally if a store has crazy prices, you can leave and go to another one. But in the airport, you’re stuck and you have pretty much no other option if you are hungry or bored or want to buy something in general, because you can’t leave once you’ve gone through security and check-in.
Avocado Austin in Australia, at least in Sydney, we have very well connected train system, so we have the option to not bring our car, and instead go to our local train station and it will lead us right to the airport terminal. This is very convenient.
RealVersatile Another precise adjective to describe them is tricky. Business rely on the service and merchandise u pay. Average 4-5hrs physical activity before takeoff result in hunger and thirst. Thus once they sell some food they would definitely get paid! Thats how tricky they r. keep eyes wild open before fall into their trap
Forgot to mention the biggest reason why airport purchases are marked up: It's a captive market. Since you had to dump out or chug your water bottle before security, you can't get a water bottle anywhere else. You're literally FORCED to buy another one.
I like to go too outlets where you can waste the time of staff who depend on sales for their earnings haha. Get them to talk in detail about a product and give impression your going to buy. Then last moment, tell them " thanks for the information, i shall now go online at home and buy it cheaper "
No airport can get me since I spend the entire time reading a book or listening to a podcast. That and the fact that I get anxious when shopping areas are too extravagant. that's when I know I'd charged much more than it's worth
I work at Dubai Airports and yes they show gates here only 90 minutes prior to boarding. But it's not because it forces people to stay in the main lobby to get them to spending. But it's because Airplanes tend to lose their parking slots hence gate changes happen more frequently which would cause passengers to miss the flight (downsides of having aerobridges). This wouldnt happen if all the gates were operated with remote bays and not bridges.
The only money I ever spend at the airport is maybe buying a single beer at a bar while I wait for my flight. Airport beer is just on another level and I cannot say no.
I never park at an airport. There's always cheap parking that have free shuttles that take you to the airport. I pay like $25 for 2 weeks of parking. And the vast majority of my flights are really late so all the restaurants are closed when I touch down.
Girl; Sydney airport charges $272 AUD for a week of parking! Think about how we feel! Sydney airport has the highest parking rates of any airport in the world!
I always park my car at a hotel near the airport. Airport parking is really cheap. You can park about 2 miles from the airport and it will only cost less than $10 a day. Lax parking is $8 a day and they have a free shuttle to the airport.
The best airport is Changi, they have the world’s largest indoor waterfall, a butterfly garden, pool, and a cinema. Sadly I live near JFK and LaGuardia, awful airports
I've honestly never had a problem at JFK (fly from there all the time). But I've never flown from La Guardia. Though I have tried Newark a couple of times and that airport I've always had a major problem there.
Eh... I mostly fly between Korea and Japan. This is my experience: 1. I always fly by LCC. I often get tickets $60 or so each way. 2. Both countries have fast and cheap public transportation to the airport. Never need to drive and park long-term. 3. I never bother with duty free. I fly for sightseeing or work: not shopping. 4. Tons of restaurants in Korean and Japanese airports I could get a meal for $10 or less. 5. Both also have convenience stores that have the SAME prices at convenience stores in the city; so no overpriced water. 6. Korea is a card-based country. Japan is moving away from cash. I find myself rarely needing to exchange much cash. 7. When I have time to kill, I use the airport's free wifi and watch something on my phone. In short, I naturally don't spend much money at the airport.
There’s free top water and WiFi. On top of that, I always book “red eye” international flight# at night, no chances to buy a donut because many restaurants closed.
Unfortunately most airports I've been to don't have water fountains. As someone who gets easily dehydrated and has had kidney issues, I actually can't believe this is even still allowed over here. I can't always bring myself to pay more than 1.50 for a bottle of water bc it feels like a scam, so sometimes I just have to go without. :(
Mentos in India 0.20 USD Mentos in Indian airports 10usd Making terminals pathways full of expensive stores just reducing costs would make it even better
@@Zlen_1 you need to be in a country which has tons of it so the item becomes a regular thing that is bought and so the price is lower or if there is a homegrown so there is no shipping fee
Airports have two huge allies to earn money: size and time. While you wait forever for your plane, you just have to read something unless you have an iPhone and have things to do. Also, such a large place, great distances, and time, it's likely you'd want something to eat or drink, especially in light of the fact the airlines don't exactly wine&dine you on board...
How people don't know this though you don't compare prices or is it just me that i grew up a little bit poor and then my family became middle class on my teenage years so I see this scams everywhere.
Probably because of the credit card system. Its harder to keep track of your finances when all you need is a card, so in the end, people don't really bother to look at the price tags anymore unless it's for a big purchase.
I don't park at the airport. I take transit or Uber or sometimes I have someone drop me off. I don't buy water, I bring an empty bottle and fill up my bottle once I get through security. I often bring snacks from home. No one forces you to buy anything, but I have to say I have enjoyed shopping in the Duty Free store area at Heathrow!
In Phillippines, they also charge a terminal entrance fee at the airport, because its not included in the plane ticket :-D And here in Prague, there is an entrance fee to enter the airport parking lot even if you just drop someone off..and even then you have only 15 minutes free parking, so people picking up someone, often wait in the fields and backroads nearby, in case of a delay..
Top tip at Gatwick South terminal. When you come through security, the escalators lead down in to the duty free area. If you turn left before them past some airport lounges, this leads you straight to the weathersoons on the upper mezzanine where there is also plenty of seating. I used to have to travel through there a lot and this kept me away from spending money, apart from that pint of beer of course.
🤔 I’ve definitely noticed Seattle Tacoma airport has the best food options out of any other airport I’ve been to. I didn’t know there was a rule about it. Come to think of it, the bathrooms were cleaner and there were more available outlets and usb charging ports than other airports. Their art installations were nice too. I wonder what they’re doing correct with port management there.
Seattleite here. Our port commission is elected, and the airport is run by the same people who run our incredibly profitable seaport, which probably translates into an economy of scale for the airport, lowering rent. I'm not sure exactly, but I believe that the interests of the public and the economy of scale are what's going on.
The only things I bought at an airport were water (when there wasn’t a drinking water fountain) and cigarettes (when I travelled within the EU where they are half the price than in Germany) and once on a 5 hours change after a 11 hours flight some food at Mecci D’s.
6:42 "Some airports make you spend more because they can" Literally the definition of current capitalist economics. That's how you run a business. If you can increase prices and people still pay, you're sure as hell going to increase prices.
The parking is not a really necessity for the average passenger. It is a premium service for richer passengers who don't bother to take a taxi or use public transportation. Also the check in of large luggages, the security check of your body and the walking to the final gate of departure don't usually last more than 20-30 minutes. Of course a safety margin of an extra one hour is good, just in case. For decades and decades airlines were based on hub airports and that was obliging most of passengers not only to wait before their first flight but during their transit flight too. So it was common to spend four boring hours waiting before entering the different airplanes. During the security liquids are forbidden, so will buy at least a beverage and that is profit for the airport. The last decade airport hubs are not favorable. Airlines and passengers prefer direct flights to more destinations with smaller airplanes. Passengers prefer not to waist time in hub airports. That's why larger airplanes which were designed the hub airport system like the Boeing 747 or the double decker Airbus a380 don't have a future. Very large airplanes with four engines don't anymore consume considerably less fuel per passenger than smaller ones. Very large airplanes consume less fuel per passenger as long they are full of passengers and that for the airlines is more difficult with very large airplanes than with smaller ones. For the airlines the fares of large hub airports are much larger than the fares of smaller airports and they avoid them. Without large hub airports, airlines can reduce the price of tickets with more profits. They don't have the risk and stress to always fill with passengers very large airplanes. The passengers don't spend much time in airports and don't have to spent money inside the airports to for drinking, eating or general shopping.
Almost teared up watching this: reminded me of good ole chill days when people did not look at each other like a potential threat and a source of infection. Can’t wait to go back there.. in 2025😂
Honestly, people should have been viewing others like that at the airport before the pandemic. The joke about getting sick after flights was prevalent for a reason XD
I remember there was a Lego section in the duty free in my airport with a big Lego minifigure made of bricks, but the weird thing was that it blinked and talked to you. Also, the Lego there was genuinely cheaper than an ordinary shop
Literally have never spent money at the airport other than for tickets and the usual *necessary* expenses for baggage and such. It’s all about being resourceful and having a plan. You don’t even need to worry about parking if you just simply call for a taxi to drive you there. I see taxis dropping/picking people up to and from airports all the time for VERY reasonable prices compared to airport’s overpriced parking lots! Also, if you bring your own technology, food & drinks, you‘ll still be able to kill plenty of time without having to shop since you have your own phone/tech and your own food/drinks to keep you busy. Plus, airports offer public charging outlets everywhere so be sure to utilize those whenever your tech runs low on battery. Also, when you bring your own reusable water bottle and fill up at water fountains-especially at the more modern water fountains that utilize the new, fresh, cool tasting water purification technology (which is a BLESSING BTW!! 😩🙏🏼), you don’t even need to THINK about ever BUYING water at the airport! To reiterate, when you plan out your travels and are resourceful, you’ll save virtually ALL your hard-earned money on some of the MOST RIDICULOUS items that you even have to PAY for, like water haha. 😁👌🏼
@@how2not358 you can but for me it’s a hassle because then by the time if it’s a plastic bottle it’s squish and if it’s a metal one it’s disturbing and sometimes heavy
I never knew curency conversion was so expensive at airports. Makes me very glad I had friends in the country I went to that exchanged my money in other places for me.
The thing is, those chocolates at the duty free shops are pretty uncommon and hard to find (Well, at my hometown). So me and my parents usually spent somewhere around 30$ on chocolates alone. Plus, buying at the airport is another kind of experience.
Over 80% of traveling is for pleasure (not business related). They know you have the money to spend. But even with the high prices, it's worth having those shops there. Many times I am rushed and want something to eat. Other than that, I don't shop there anyway.
there's nothing sneaky about it, I know I'm being forced to buy overpriced junk when I'm sitting around with no cooked food for an entire day, and I'm furious every time I get stuck doing it. airports are a prison of high prices punishing you for using air transportation.
It's genius not sneaky from a business standpoint. Managing and maintaining airport facilities is costly to meet the peoples demand/comfort/safety. just bring your own food next time.
Tip: Get the business class on cheap airlines to sneak in the lounge; that way u can have delicious meals and drinks and you can stay there with ur phone so you wont need to pay for any stores
I worked at an airport once and learned some tricks to spend as little as possible at the airport by: bringing my own sandwich (yes, you can absolutely get it through security), fruit like apples and tangerines keep well, trail mix, packet of cookies and my empty bottle of water, as there is always ways to refill it. I always bring reading materials and make sure I have my phone charger, headphones, neck rest, gum and essential make-up items and medicine. Only thing I buy is coffee, specially if the flight departs or arrives early in the morning.
