We decided to take apart the original SNES versus the SNES classic, showing the disassembly process along the way.
Ad: EVGA G3 750W PSU on Amazon (geni.us/t2pVS)
The original SNES uses game bits, a special type of screw, and was one of the first consumer devices to use special bits to block attempts at opening the device. We used an iFixit Universal Bit Kit for this: geni.us/G5rg
While taking apart the original SNES, we also took apart the SNES Classic side-by-side to compare the differences. We might benchmark the SNES Classic at some point, but it'll have to wait until after CES!

The sound chip actually has an interesting story on how a Sony chip ended up in a Nintendo system. Ken Kutaragi (man who would eventually design the Playstation) started working on the audio chip for Nintendo without letting Sony know, and only presented the deal/finished chip to them when things would need to be finalized business side. This would have been a few years before the Nintendo/Playstation debacle, so they didn't have any bad blood at this point. Interestingly, there would have been a few years after Nintendo would have screwed Sony out of their CD-Rom addon agreement where Sony would be both working on/shipping Playstation units while also providing chips to their new rival for the SNES, until the launch of the N64.

0:09 To clarify, 1983 was the release year of the Japanese version of the NES (called the Family Computer / Famicom). The NES didn't come out in the US until 1985, and that was only for a test market in New York. After hosting a few more test markets in the coming months, it would finally have a full national release later in 1986. So instead of having a 7-8 year gap between consoles it was really more like 5-6.
@MrV1NC3N7V3G4
@MrV1NC3N7V3G4 5 лет назад
Yup! I was gonna say the same thing. My first job was at age 16 at Toys R Us for the 1986 Christmas season. NES Base models were being sold with Super Mario Brothers for $79.99 and the Deluxe NES had the Zapper gun, robot, Duck Hunt and another game for $139.99. We couldn't keep them in stock. At the same time, the original SEGA system was being sold as well as the Commodore 64 (and later Commodore 128) which already had a significant foothold in the home computer market.
@RedVisor1
@RedVisor1 5 лет назад
@@MrV1NC3N7V3G4 Wow, that's pretty neat to hear; I didn't think that NES consoles were flying off shelves literally that early in its lifespan. I'm from Canada, and although it'd be hard to confirm this, I'm pretty sure I didn't start seeing commercials for this system until sometime in 1987. I didn't pick one up until 1989 and found it to be a challenge as the console as well as most 1st party games were pretty hard to find.

Your point is meaningless, he is talking about the console development time, which WAS a 7 year gap between the Japanese release of the NES and the SNES. When it was released in the US is irrelevant to the gap between consoles, it is only relevant to the gap between US releases.

Ya, they're supposed to do tech news. Without a guide, I tore apart my first PC and put it back together when I was around 8, and it still worked. There are dozens of PC build guides available now and they didn't think to check a single one? It isn't hard, and when they made mistakes they just edited the video. What the fuck were they thinking
@Zarcondeegrissom
@Zarcondeegrissom 5 лет назад
Nathan Hamman Not cool at all I will agree. uh, no video editing was done, youtube does not work that way. Once a vid is posted it can not be changed and a new vid must be posted with the changes in it (and de-listing or deleting the old vid is optional). The Verge deleted comments suggesting corrections and pretended they did no wrong, until it became a PR problem for them, and then they just yanked the vid. And some involved with the Verge vid insisted for some time after the vid was yanked that they did no wrong by misleading people by fixing the mistakes off camera and not acknowledging any corrections they made in the vid they posted. it was bad. I am still curious how much stuff had to be replaced off camera, because the radiator was skewered by using the wrong screws, lol.
@Klaeyy
@Klaeyy 5 лет назад
@@Zarcondeegrissom No that's not entirely true. You can change a video in retrospect (for some time now). I don't know to what extent exactly, but you can *at least* cut out / remove specific parts. In case you have to remove something because of copyright problems or because it's misinformation or problematic somehow.
@Zarcondeegrissom
@Zarcondeegrissom 5 лет назад
rrr, the YT editor, and that feature had been removed for some time now. And the editor does not alter the original video, it creates a new vid with the changes. The original vid with the comments to it still exists as it was. I have used that very thing to coble together a vid from my dash-cam my self. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QYsne5G8N68.html I simply never made the original vid public, and it still exists as its own vid as it was.

I doubt this will get seen much, but if it does, there are some differences between original SNES (SNS-001) consoles. Disregarding the fact that there was a major design overhaul with the SNES (model number SNS-101), there were also hardware changes throughout the SNS-001 life-cycle. I have compared internals with a friend who has numerous different broken SNES consoles he uses for repair parts and he has educated me about the variations in the past. I know that my SNS-001 is different from most of my friend's SNS-001, just based on the internals. Sadly, I do not currently have comparison pictures of the component layouts, but it is interesting to look into, if you're curious. But, the model that Steve shows in the video is but one of many internal configurations. I don't know how well RU-vid accepts links, so Google "SNES differences reddit" and a considerate poster has made a spreadsheet that shows the various different chips used in many of the configurations. Some of the models combined internal chips to reduce the number of parts, all with varying levels of performance and accuracy. Try to keep this in mind when testing the performance differences between your SNS-001 and the SNES Classic.

I wonder if the controllers have that odd problem where you'd be playing against a friend and the loser's buttons would start messing up, or "lagging" as a few of my friends often called it. It would only ever happen to the player who was losing, and would sometimes magically begin working correctly again if they started winning. So strange, how that would happen... 🙄

@@johnmadison3472 Gonna have to go with the NA one for that. The Famicom design used in Oceanic region and Japan, was less sleak, the issue however, was in the durability. The NA version was seen as the most durable creation ever conceived by Nintendo. Both my old Famicoms broke in 1993 and 1999, my SNES from 1992 still works today. It most definitely flouted convention with regard to how modifications for a region tend to create a worse iteration.

Richard Greer it depends. If the yellowing is everywhere and kind of greasy it's nicotine. If it's only on the top/side and not internal it's the natural ABS yellowing from UV sunlight or CRT display. If it's on certain parts and internal it's the flame retardant.

@janus3555 4 года назад
@@GamersNexus It was definitely good but some RPG purists at the time (can't believe I'm calling them that today) felt it was too much like a Disney iteration of a genre. Personally I felt it was a solid product that worked well for those new to RPGs as well as those who had originally played them. The list (RPGs since it's off of Super Mario RPG) for SNES really comes down to Final Fantasy 2, Mystic Quest and 3 (4, MQ and 6 in Japan), Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Breath of Fire series, Robotrek, Lufia, Dragon Quest series, Earthbound, Bahamut Lagoon and of course the underrated Arcana and The 7th Saga were typically the prime few. Then on top of that you had console iterations of PC games like Drakkhen, Dungeon Master, Might & Magic 3, and a few Ultima games. Ports that in that era were actually better than the PC versions (due to that lagging effect of PC and Console disparity that changes hands every generation), especially in the case of M&M3. This of course lends to the connection in how RPGs like Final Fantasy and others were based off the original three for computer RPGs, Wizardry, Ultima and Might & Magic. The first two being the basis for Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. Then you had Adventure RPGs like Brain Lord, Lagoon, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (The guy who thought that name up deserved a raise), Dragon View and strategy RPGs like Ogre Battle. Suffice to say, SNES was probably the best console for RPGs on the market and thinking back, LotSS was smart to develop it as an homage to the genre. In that sense, right-on with that assessment, Steve.

So you have have one of the original SNES where the CPU and video chip were separate. Later revisions of the SNES and the SNES Jr had a single chip. The original SNES like what you have doesn't have the best video quality and can be a bit blurry. The bad thing about the SNES Jr is that the multiout port doesn't output RGB or S-Video, however you can easily mod it to output both RGB and S-Video. Also there are mods to use an external RGB amp for even better video quality.

The Ricoh 5A22 is based on the 65C816, which is a 16bit variant of the 8-bit 6502 found in the NES. The 65C816 is also found in the Apple II GS line. The 65C816 is backwards compatible with the 6502. When Nintendo was designing the SNES they wanted backwards compatibility with the NES originally, so they chose this CPU. But many discrepancies with the different audio chip and graphics chip caused Nintendo to drop HW BC with the NES, but they kept the CPU for the final design.

@29:00 - ‘KiB’ in this case is the exact same thing as the old usage ‘KB’; 1 024 bytes. Units with prefixes followed by ‘i’ are just the newer recommended usage, intended to prevent confusion of the IT ‘binary approximation’ multiples and the SI prefixes: ‘1 kB’ should be 1 000 B (because ‘k’ stands for ‘kilo’ which is 1 000), while ‘1 kiB’ means ‘1 [k in binary]B’ or 1 024 B (2 to the power of 10 yields 1 024). Hard drives have always given capacity in SI units - so a ‘1 TB’ hard drive is nominally 1 000 000 000 000 bytes, and not 1 099 511 627 776 bytes - while everything else in an IT device will use the ‘binary approximation’. This is why your 1 TB hard drive will show as smaller than 1 TiB in your operating system. (Also, I didn’t use the comma as decimal separator in the numbers given; using a space instead. Europeans, and the SI, use the comma as a decimal point - ‘1,5’ is one and a half - so using it as a separator is also discouraged. Go ahead and complain, but your kids will be taught these conventions and will be less confused because of it.)

Actually 8 years is pretty lengthy. Likely a result of rudimentary technology where big leaps wouldn't be seen until after the SNES. The n64 launched 5 year after the SNES. The GameCube and the Wii was also 5 years cycles. Also, PS1 > PS2 was 5 years PS2 > PS3 was 6 years PS3 > PS4 was 7 years Xbox > Xbox 360 was 4 years Xbox 360 > Xbox One was 8 years I think a 6 year console development cycle is a more appropriate target.

It wasn't 8 years. The 1983 release was only the Famicom in Japan. NES was first presented in 85, but main release in the West was in 1986. So 5 years before SNES, or 6 if you count the limited New York release. In Japan FC to SFC was 7 years.

@robertt9342
@robertt9342 5 лет назад
Actually, on the Classic it is a heatspreader, but also functions as a RF shield. It even has a thermal pad between it and the processor. On the original, they are just RF shields.

It is absolutely a heat spreader. That's what the thermal pad is for. 🤦🏼‍♂️

I really wish I could see a true modern reproduction of an old console that has all the same functionalities (plays original games), but is built with modern techniques and hardware. Technology has come so far since then, I'd just love to see how much more improved and optimized it could be without sacrificing any of the original features.

Look at the analogue systems. They are FPGAs based systems and they are the next best thing to original hardware.

That SNES Classic platform has a quad core ARM Cortex-A7 at 1.5GHz maximum, 256MB DDR3L-1600 SDRAM and 512MB SLC NAND Flash. R16, as part of Allwinner sunxi lineup, has good open source support from linux-sunxi community, and you might be able to pull the contents out and replace the firmware with your own preferred Linux distribution.

The rubbers... it's important. Take the damn controller apart and give a close up of the rubbers! Press them down so we can see how thin it's made and how it flexes. Compare them side by side to see if they're interchangeable with the original. The whole thing is just an emulator in a box without those controllers.

can you compare this with the raspberry pi? it seems like similar hardware. software wise this is plug and play, but to achieve the same with a RPi it takes "some" extra steps but it also gives a lot more FREEdom!

Nintendo probably sent the original or slightly modified prints for the plastic parts of the controller. The differences we do notice are likely a result of improved injection molding processes.
