Great video Steve. All the way through I kept thinking, why not just play a gentle run through, as I do like to hit the balls softly. Thankfully you explained why towards the end: useful stuff, thanks.

The stun run through can work when the cloth is new and the balls perfectly clean. But in not great conditions is almost impossible to judge the pace and the spin specially when the distance is too small or to long. The shot is so sensitive to dirt that even a new clean cue ball behaves differently after 2-3 frames if not wiped ....

Excellent video going thru the various factors such as power, aiming height, distance from cue ball to object ball and of course finishing with a real life example of how this works to achieve the desired position. Keep it up !

Really good video and thoroughly explained. An animation of the cue ball stunning and then converting to run-through would have been useful to people new to this kind of shot. 10/10 Steve as always!

Thank you Steve, this is a great video to explain Stun run through. I was struggling about this shot because some coaches said it is hit a bit lower of centre of cue ball, in your first video of stun run through, you showed us it is hit a bit higher of centre of cue ball, it is so confusing for me to play a correct stun run through shot. This video clearly explained all the elements.

Hello Steve. Another great video once again. Question: Do you always play these kinds of shots at the same height on the cue ball (while varying shot speed of course according to the distance between them)? And also, could you make a video about the negative effects of deceleration?

Do you play with a squeeze on stun shots/screws I find it so much easier with a little squeeze when you strike the ball

My goodness but you are a great coach! Would it be fair to say that, when you talk about "running out of stun", what you are referring to is the end of the sliding (or skidding) motion of the cue ball and the point at which the cue ball starts to grip the cloth and begin to roll forwards? When the cue ball hits the object ball then it "momentarily" stops... if it has previously stopped sliding then it will naturally be rolling forward and the cue ball will "run through". If the cue ball was still sliding as it hits the object ball then the spin played on the cue ball will begin to take effect and it will either roll forward (top spin) or backwards (screw). So on long shots you are controlling the length of the skid using the power and a small amount of screw so that on contact the cue ball will have developed just enough forward roll to "stun through". Whereas on short shots the cue ball will still be sliding on contact with the object ball and you need to apply a tiny bit of top spin to help it to roll through. At least that's how I'm seeing it. (?)

Hi Frank! Yes, that's exactly right. You have it very clear in your mind. Once you understand that, you can then try to judge the exact spin and feel the shot when playing 👍

Hlo Manoj here from India I have a doubt should I always pull the cue all the way back to the v notch even if we are playing a shot where the cue ball and object ball is near by?
