In this video I look at a very useful routine that you see many of the professionals practicing.
I look at some of the key things to think about, and how a good pre-shot-routine and consistent pace around the table can help improve your snooker.

Steve is obviously a good player but for those players out there who are not so in control and tend to rush shots here is one tip that will really help. Do not Chalk & Walk. Always wait until you are behind the line of shot before chalking your cue. I guarantee this will help you concentrate that little bit more. I’m sure Steve will Back me up on that. When you chalk and walk a lot of people will slide into the shot and not take the time behind the shot like they are supposed to. It’s something I was guilty of until someone pointed it out.

Thanks for that, I think you're absolutely right. Speeding up is too easy a habit to get into and for some reason, you also slightly lose concentration as a result.

THE BEST snooker channel on RU-vid. Not like one channel (not to be named) where he had a student and "coach" was doing line up. "Your job is to pick up the colors and tell if I played stun, screw or draw shot." Every human who ever played any kinds of billiards knows that!!! When student asks in the middle of the line up "Why you played like that". "Hsss, we can discuss afterwards". So the student paid the "coach" to practice and did some slave work at the same time. Barton Snooker is light years ahead of that channel. I will be coming for some coaching later this year. All the way from Finland.

Like these kind of videos, obviously they are great and important but this video is great, gives me a guide on what to do with my game. Admittedly though I was shocked on how many shots were taken by the cue striking the cue ball centre. I thought a lot of them would have been at an angle on the cue ball.

Just got to say once more how much I appreciate you visually showing the spin used with the cue ball graphic. Only one tiny suggestion though, and this might be a complete pain for you to do, but would it be possible for you overlay a grid on the graphic so I can tell just how much top and bottom spin is used, especially any side, compared to other shops? The tiny difference of spin between different shots can be very hard for me to tell. Please keep the example lessons coming!

great Video Steve, obviously you play to a high standard and make it look easy, what i am struggling with now is this line of aim. its alright saying stand behind the line of the shot, however when i am not sure what or where that is i am struggling. every shot i play i have doubt and this is whats killing my game, i've had coaching and non of them can explain to me how to do this. some may think i'm nuts cause i can play, however in spite of everyone saying my stance , grip, action are all fine i can't find a solution to my inconsistency. ,aybe when i come a see you we can sort his out once and for all.

Really helpful video Steve. I'm very guilty of speeding up during practice breaks. I ALWAYS make the mistake of getting obsessed about the rising size of the break and my technique gets worse and worse. Please could you do a vid about how to keep your nerve during a match. I often start well and then my nerves take over until I start missing even the simplest of shots. Suddenly every shot on the table looks difficult! Then after I have done sufficient damage to my score I relax again and start to play better - it's maddening! Have you got any tips on how to 'keep it together' in a match?

Hi, I can make 60,70,80 breaks in practice doing certain routines but when it comes to frames against mates etc I struggle to consistently make 40 and 50 breaks how can I learn how to score heavier like I do in practice in real matches and frame situations
@Knightlore10
@Knightlore10 5 лет назад
In solo practice you are always at the table and always in the balls. If you break down, you just put yourself back in good position and away you go again. All this means you create great rhythm and break building becomes easy. When playing your mates or in more competitive situations you have so much more to contend with - scrappy frames where the balls become awkward, loss of rhythm because you are no longer dominating the table and pressure. I think the best way to deal with it is to expose yourself to it more often. Play the best players you know and remember you learn a lot more from your losses than your wins. Put yourself into tournaments and the local league if you don't do that already. Don't get annoyed when you lose - nobody died (hopefully). Analyse where things went wrong and come back stronger. Sorry for the long response but I know just how you feel ;-)

For the final green to brown, your cueball diagram shows a screw shot, but you sorta did a soft stun, right?
@BartonSnooker
@BartonSnooker 5 лет назад
Hi! It's right at the bottom of the cue-ball, but just not very hard. So if I hit very low, but without much power, the spin will have run out by the time the cue-ball hits the green, and I'll just get a stun effect. I often explain to people, you can stun a ball in two ways: 1) hit higher on the white with more power and you'll get stun 2) hit lower on the white with less power, and you'll get stun again. Like I say, it's just about when the spin on the cue-ball is wearing out. Imagine a drag shot, that's right at the bottom but low cue speed, so that when the cue-ball hits the object ball there is no spin left on. That's effectively what I did on that green. Hit a bit lower, with less cue speed. Hope that helps 🙂

Hi. I would say everyone suffers from this to some degree. This is where over time you will just get better at doing the correct things with your technique and general approach to the game. @BernardoMacedo 5 лет назад
Jeff Matheson why? Any particular reason? I do practice on a star table and it is difficult I can tell you! But probably because of my skill level.
@the_alchemy_method
@the_alchemy_method 5 лет назад
@@BernardoMacedo a few reasons. One is the speed of the cloth and the other is the throw of the cue ball off the cushions is usually a different trajectory due to steel block cushions and the thinner cloth causing the ball to slide and throw more. Plus the pockets themselves are tighter cut hence you need to be more accurate with your cue ball control especially positional play and keep things simple as possible. In contrast to club tables that usually have larger easier pockets where u can afford to fall out of position and pot a crazy shot down a rail - demands less accuracy on potting too. You cant rely on that on the tighter match pockets... Hope that helps
@BernardoMacedo
@BernardoMacedo 5 лет назад
Jeff Matheson the club I practice in Lisbon, had an official Star table. The pockets are very tight and the table has steel blocks. In the other hand, there is a smaller 10 foot table (Riley) and the pickets are more generous! But definitely the cloth has been changed recently and it is very hard. Snooker Club Lisbon really tries to give its athletes the best conditions possible. Sadly there is only one table and I wished there could be more places with more tables. I guess slowly we will get there. Thank you for your answer.
