Initiated on December 15 1944, the German offensive, known as "Watch on the Rhine" and later referred to by the Americans as the Battle of the Bulge, saw the 5th and 6th Panzer Armies breaking through U.S. lines along the German-Belgian border advancing towards Antwerp.
As U.S. forces were pushed westward, the 101st Airborne Division remained steadfast in Bastogne encircled by the enemy.
On December 18, the 4th Armored Division part of General Patton's 3rd Army, commenced a 19-hour, 150-mile race to reach and liberate the besieged 101st in Bastogne.
Despite the German forces persisting in their attack on the western perimeter of Bastogne on December 26, the U.S. defense lines remained resilient and held their ground.
Departing from assembly-areas north of Arlon on December 22, the 37th Tank Battalion under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Creighton Williams Abrams engaged in fierce battles as they fought their way to Bastogne.

Only one Combat Command of the 10th Armored was at Bastogne. By the time the 4th Armored broke through the German lines, most of the 10th's tanks had been knocked out in 10 days of hard combat holding Bastogne. Not putting down the 10th's participation, just making sure it is understood only part of the division was present.

Team Ryerson, Team Cherry, Team O'Hara, Team Pyle and Team Arnsdorf stopped the Lehr on 21st of December. The 4th Armoured didn't liberate them, just reconnected. An older brother served under Gen. Abrams in Vietnam in '68 and '69. He only ever has good to say about Abrams. I went to school with the General's kids, a couple of kingdoms to the West. All good. My Dad may one day be exposed in history. He was a civilian in another type of war in an almost unknown place named Laos. From commanding a battalion in WWII to commanding all American troops at the height of the American involvement in Vietnam, General Abrams was first class. Lol, my father-in-law and Abrams both served under Gen. Patton in WWII.

Well done. That medic that recived the Medal of Honor from the hand of George S. Patton made the whole video in my opinion. As for General Abrams, what can you say about a man that was a legend in his own time. Died to soon. You know you're good when they name a tank after you. Two Tank Aces that never faced off against each other. Michael Wittman in his Tiger. And Abrams in the Thunderbolt!
@wymple09
@wymple09 4 месяца назад
Wittman's legacy is largely German propaganda. For instance, he was regularly given credit for kills & victories attained by others under his command, even tho he wasn't involved.
@imperialmodelworks8473
@imperialmodelworks8473 4 месяца назад
If you look at Wittmanns combat career, and his reprimands, it appears his success had more to do with fighting inexperienced (and inferior tanks early in the war) crews on the eastern front, and it's largely due to luck that he made it from the eastern front to the western front. He repeatedly made huge tactical blunders in the east ans escaped by the skin of his teeth, and that caught up to him when the Canadians killed him in France while he drove across an open field like a fool.
@josephwolosz2522
@josephwolosz2522 4 месяца назад
@imperialmodelworks8473 some of the German tank Aces had bad marks against them. Hitler couldn't afford to remove them from the battlefield. Wittman still has good numbers during the Normandy campaign. He was bound to be caught in open country. German armor was outnumbered in the East and West by 1944.

For whatever reason (probably to preserve it's mystique), it is misleading to only state that the 101st was the only element in Bastogne. Parts of the 9th and 10th armored divisions, a tank destroyer battalion, combat engineers, and some artillery battalions were also there. Without them, the 101st would have been easily overrun, but nobody mentions them.

His team held the road south of Bastogne up until the 21st when they were all knocked out.

The role of the USA in the Victory of 1945 is negligible. For three years they waited and sought to bleed the USSR. On November 6, 1943, at a solemn meeting dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution, at the most tense time for our country, when the fate of the Fatherland was being decided, Stalin said: “The main reason for the tactical successes of the Germans on our front this year is that that the absence of a second front in Europe made it possible for them to carry out this operation without any risk to themselves. And how did the United States and its allies fight? For example, at the same time, when millions of soldiers and officers of the Red Army bravely and wisely fought near Stalingrad and on other fronts of the Great Patriotic War, the Allies carried out the only operation on the European continent, insignificant in terms of the number of forces and means involved. On August 17, 1942, a landing force of 5,000 Canadians was landed in the area of the French city of Dieppe. The Germans, of course, quickly defeated the Canadians: 900 Canadian soldiers were killed, about 2,000 were taken prisoner. Such operations only raised the spirit of the Nazi army, but had no effect on the battles on the Soviet-German front. Having a significant superiority over the German troops in forces and means, the Allied troops began to retreat. “In a matter of days, Hitler’s troops broke through the weak defenses of the 1st American Army on a front of up to forty kilometers, by December 22 they captured the cities of Saint-Hubert and Marsh and, soon reaching the Meuse River, found themselves at the line of Dinant, Liver, without introducing for the development of this offensive no reserves. Thus, having penetrated 100-110 kilometers into the territory occupied by American troops, they expanded the breakthrough front to one hundred kilometers, dividing the British and American troops into two parts. The world glorifies the armies of the USA and England, despite the fact that they did not learn how to conduct military operations in 1944. On June 6, 1944, and in the following days, Hitler did not take any effective measures against the landing troops of the United States and England. He clearly considered their armies incapable of fighting the troops of Germany and he threw all his forces and means against the advancing troops of the Red Army...

This shows why the Americans with their M4s beat the Germans with their technically superior machines, superior at least on paper. The M4 had speed and reliability, head and shoulders above the German heavy tanks. Abrams' leadership style emphasised teamwork, and strong but not glory-grabbing leadership. The Germans with their stress on building up phoney supermen like Wittmann for Goebbels' propaganda films failed, as any regime based on a bullshit ideology such as Nazism is bound to fail.

Unending support for the armies like ammunition and food, medical support and penicillin. PBS ran an excellent documentary on the Bulge. So sad to hearing the doctors and corpsmen having to send wounded soldiers back into the fight knowing they would either freeze from blood loss or if wounded again certainly freeze from blood loss. Wounds that normally would get you taken to the rear were ignored out of desperation.

That's a pure BS😂 The role of the USA in the Victory of 1945 is negligible. He clearly considered their armies incapable of fighting the troops of Germany and he threw all his forces and means against the advancing troops of the Red Army.

They then had to Cross the Mine laiden Englash Channel - not to mention the mined landing beachs... Bastogne was bypassed by the bulk of the German forces, so its wrong to think of it as a pivotal point in the battle of the Bulge. The press made a great fuss because Patton was involved. The Germans were stopped 60 miles North-West of Bastogne near Dinant by US 9th Army under Monty.
@patrickmccrann991
@patrickmccrann991 5 месяцев назад
Wrong. The 9th Army was not involved in the battle at all. The U.S. forces involved were the 3rd Army and 1st Army. Only one British Brigade was moved to a combat position. The U.S. 3rd Armored Division stopped the lead German units, not the British. Montgomery was placed in command, overall, of the northern shoulder of the Bulge. The U.S. 1st Army was in command of the troops on the northern shoulder, utilizing the U.S. 18th Airborne and 7th Corps. Don't give Montgomery credit he doesn't deserve.

Additionally, Bastogne, along with St. With, were critical points in the Ardennes. They were the two most important road junctions in the entire area. Without them, the Germans were forced to maneuver on secondary roads, burning critical fuel reserves and expending time.

The German Watch on the Rhine has nothing to do with the Bastogne or the Battle of the Bulge. “Die Wacht am Rhein” (The Watch on the Rhine) is a German patriotic anthem. The song's origins are rooted in the historical French-German enmity, and it was particularly popular in Germany during the Franco-Prussian War and the First World War. The Rhine is nowhere near Bastogne

FM Kluge shouted at Rommel that very point. Rommel told him to go look for himself in Normady. von Kluge apologized to Rommel, his subordinate, after being socked at what he saw. In fact evidence shows von Kluge negotiated in Normandy with the Allies because of what he saw. No Russian formations could match the Allies. von Kluge committed suicide in Metz after the bomb plot when Hitler found out about the secret meeting with the Allies and his connection to the plot. The reason von Kluge was alarmed? One Allied Armoured Division was worth a Corps of Russians with the amount of equipment and combined arms techniques. The Allies had perfected the blitzkrieg in ways the Germans could only dream of. When you have real combined arms compared to the enemy, they cannot win. Maj General Rose, 3rd Armoured, taught the other Generals how to fight superior tank formations. Combined Arms.

You do realize the Germans defeated themselves in the Battle of the Bulge. Big gas hungry tanks, snowy icy roads that bogged down the big cats, no air support, bad planning, poorly lead. In 1940, the Germans had good weather, small tanks suitable for the country roads, lots of gas, top notch Generals and air support.

Different circumstances. The Germans in 1939 had over 3 million men, 5,000 air craft and were well supplied. The Germans at the Battle of the Bulge had 400,000 men, 1,224 tanks but no air power and they were running low on fuel stocks.

The Battle of the Bulge is an interesting battle, as it was an unnecessary one. Germany even if successful did not have the manpower to secure any area taken. Why do Dictators always in the end and losing the war rally and send troops out to their deaths in some desperate gamble you know wouldn't matter even if it worked. Taking a nation and people down with them when surrender would have been the best option. Certainly not for Hitler, but at least for his people. Not stopping even when commanding teenagers and children to their deaths as there were so few German men left. Just like in WW I. Talk about ruining the gene pool of the German people while at the same time claiming Germans a superior race. Yep, nuts.
