This is the second out of four improved audio mix of the original 1950's Fantasyland dark rides that I'm posting on my channel, specifically the original version of Snow White's Adventures. While I do prefer the other 1950's dark rides (But not Pinocchio), this has always been another really fun and for most of it's history, very spooky attraction. The original version opened with the park in 1955, and although it was kind of primitive compared to the 1983 and 2021 versions, it was still extremely charming and had a lovely soundtrack. Also, I need to give a huge thanks to DisneyChris.com for providing the incredible source audio that you hear, which I have mixed and synced with many vintage images of the original version in the 50's and early 60's. This classic attraction began outside the tournament tent façade like the other dark rides at the time, with King Arthur's Carousel and it's Band Organ playing in the center. You see the original beautiful loading mural, and board your mine cart to enter the Seven Dwarves Mine (Mine carts looked a bit different and smaller than the c.1969 to present versions, and yes the originals were replaced over a decade before the ride was rebuilt in 1981-83). At first it's just darkness and the first verse of the Dig song, but soon you come across such sights as an endless mineshaft, the Seven Dwarves Vault, the famous Dwarves mining with pickaxes setup, and Dopey standing next to a rock and sign reading "Beware of the Witch". Then, it's out into the Glade where you see Snow Whites animal friends, the Seven Dwarves cottage, and the vultures, before hearing the Portcullis slam shut of the Queen's Castle. In this menacing area, you see chattering Skeletons, and the first three Wicked Witch dioramas. The first is her shadow, while the second is a full sized Witch figure standing brewing the Poison Apple at her cauldron, uttering "Have An Apple dearie!". The last Witch diorama is the Witch cackling from behind a castle wall. Then, it's out into the darkness again, and you went thru the classic Haunted Forest scene (RIP 1955-2020), before seeing the last two Witch dioramas. The fourth is the Witch saying "Have an Apple dearie!" again from the door of the Seven Dwarfs Cottage, however after careful investigation of the only live recording of this (1955-81) version, both Alex R and GoatPrince pointed out in the comments that the Witch actually didn't say that at the cottage door, instead at the Cauldron scene (Thank you both!). However, because it was in DisneyChris 1955 mix, & that recording was from 1972, I think it was used in very early years. The last diorama is the Witches death from being crushed by lighting and a boulder, another scene which has always been part of the ride. Then, it's back into the hustle and bustle of Fantasyland at Disneyland. If you are wondering where Snow White was during this story, the reason was that you played the role of Snow White. This was because of the extremely limited and tight budgets that WED worked with the in the early-to-mid-50's before and up to the parks opening. Although Disney made several successful films during that time, it simply wasn't enough to fund the new entertainment venture, so they had to cut costs in some places simply because, unlike today's multi-million dollar company, they didn't have a lot of money and resources back then, mainly because of how much money the studio lost during and for a few years after World War II. But after Disneyland proved to be a massive success, the cash started flowing in like never before. It wasn't until after Walt's passing in the 1970's when they started losing money again because the films at that time, though some were good, were generally not as successful as most during Walt's time. This was also why they couldn't rebuild the ride until the 1982-83 New Fantasyland, even though they likely wanted to years earlier in the 70's. Despite being one of Disneyland's smaller dark rides from the 60's to the present day, the Snow White ride has always been a really fun, scary (except for 2021-present in this case), and charming C Ticket dark ride in the middle of Fantasyland. I hope you enjoy.
I do not own any of the audio or images used in this video. All audio is owned by Disney, and all images are owned by their respective owners, including but not limited to Davelandweb.com and "E" Ticket Magazine. And special credit and huge thanks to DisneyChris.com for releasing most of the extremely rare source audio.

Fantastic video! Also, while the other FL dark rides closed in September 1982, Snow White's Adventures closed in December 1981.

Many thanks Benjamin, your reconstructions of the original Fantasyland dark rides are wonderful. I rode these first editions and, while they may have been humble of means compared to now, in some other ways such as staging and continuity, they were better. Especially SWA, which has unfortunately been "tamed" with each successive revamp. Some observations: The first scene as riders entered was in incandescent light: paste gems on the mine walls with a flickering illumination. Though Dopey is seen here peeking behind the vault door, for the whole time I knew the ride he was placed in the vignette just before; had he been too close to mischief- making riders? The circa 1980 Super 8 film of Fantasyland which you have mentioned elsewhere shows this ear-flapping Dopey as he was positioned from at least 1970 through the ride's closing in 1981. The Snow White figure was kneeling to the right of the owl tree in the Forest Friends section, and she was there as of 1979, the last time I rode this version. The "Have an apple dearie!" audio always accompanied the witch behind the pillar set. Designer Ken Anderson created an illustration for nearly every scene in this ride ( you use two of them for your presentation) , and a little rhyme explained the picture: "Have an apple dearie!" was the caption for the pillar witch. Incidentally, for years in the 1970s the hair for this crone figure was clearly fashioned from a mop, which jiggled delightfully as she slid into view. There are sources on RU-vid to hear the other witch audios. There is the 1970 Disney TV show episode with the Osmonds at Disneyland and the newly opened Haunted Mansion. As the group moves past the swiveling busts in the hallway, the SWA cauldron witch cackle is heard. When the cottage door flew open, the hag let out a wonderfully raspy, whooping cackle which is heard on that Super-8 film, and predates the WDW edition of SWA. This whooper is also audible at 1:23 in the 1972 Mouse Factory episode hosted by Phyllis Diller. These marvelous witch laughs were possibly voiced by Martha Wentworth, who specialized in ghastly chuckles as far back as a Tom and Jerry cartoon in the 1940s. The painted flats of the trees had been replaced by the 1970s with large glowing eyes, such as frightened Snow White in the movie (that black square at top was probably a shield to conceal the fluorescent light). It was here that riders for a second time brushed past hanging cords, a very unsettling sensation! It's true that this first version was quite terrifying for many little' uns, but if there are any adults out there still dealing with unresolved trauma from the experience, I will pay for their therapy. Thanks again, keep up the good work and I hope to comment soon on the other dark ride classics.

*You are extremely welcome,* especially with all of that incredible additional information! There are a few things you mentioned that, admittedly, I had already learned (Dopey being moved most likely in the 1960's, and the Haunted Forest trees becoming three dimensional around the same time), but just about all of the other factual details you stated I was not previously aware of. I do agree that the pacing and staging in the original dark rides seemed mostly better than today's, and although I like the addition of a happy ending, the removal of the Haunted Forest, Cottage, and larger Death scene means that I really don't think Enchanted Wish helped that. I genuinely had no idea the Snow White figure in the Glade was still present in 1979 (Probably though 1981 then I'm guessing), and although I've seen the 1980 film several times it was too blurry for me to know about the glowing tree eyes either. I didn't know about the Witches Hair being like a mop in the 1970's, nor the hanging cords in the Haunted Forest (Although I had read about that in the Witches Castle). I was also really pleased to hear that additional Witch audio, which I searched and heard as soon as you told me. However, I do have a question relating to the Cauldron cackle that if you remember and have the time, I would really love to know the answer to. I know most, if not all of the audio in these dark rides are either played on an endless loop, or on a trigger for every passing vehicle, and that the Cauldron cackle in the 1970 Disney episode was about 2-3 seconds long. Do you happen to remember if it was staged for each vehicle, before or after "Have an Apple dearie!", or instead played on a loop like the cackles played here (Maybe instead of this version)? Either way, I'm so glad you enjoyed this and would enjoy hearing your thoughts on the other classic dark rides!

@@benjaminroberson1924 Benjamin, each witch scene in the original SWA had its own audio of several seconds, triggered for every passing car: shadow, cauldron, pillar, cottage, boulder. The "sickly witch cackles", as GoatPrince described them as heard in the 1972 recording, played on a loop centered near the cottage, and were faintly audible throughout most of the ride. Some might call this lousy acoustics; I call it inadvertent genius. The echoing cackles lent an underlying sense of dread and suspense to the whole experience: it made no difference how many times you physically evaded the witch, she had already invaded your mind. Thanks for your exceptional work and I'll chime in soon on Pan, Toad, and Alice.

@@stefano-vn7hx Thank you so much for clarifying! And I agree about the inadvertent genius of hearing the cottage witch cackles throughout much of the ride

I have never seen a Snow White ride without Snow White?! what?!
@benjaminroberson1924
@benjaminroberson1924 2 года назад
Yes, the original Snow White ride *usually* did not feature any Snow White figures until the 1983 update. There was actually one Snow White figure briefly in the early 70's (In the Glade scene), but only one photograph has ever surfaced of it, from a Daveland 1972 collection, and besides that, Snow White didn't appear in her own Disneyland ride until 1983. The reason behind this is that the 1955 Imagineers had relatively limited budget, space, and time to work with (The whole original park was built in just over a year), and so they went with the idea that you became Snow White and were experiencing her Adventures from her perspective, which was why there were no figures of her for most of 1955-1981.
