We just skied their last week, it was our first time skiing out west. We had a blast, met a few Patrol guys and girls at each resort. We loved the sound of those early morning booms to keep us safe. It was a epic trip snowed all week long and ended with a total of around 80 inches between our first and last day of skiing. Amazing views even in the snow, and epic conditions. Thank you all for keep us all safe.
This is why you don't cut rope lines. These men and women put their lives at risk so that the rest of us civilians can have fun without overly endangering ourselves or others. Respect their decision to open or close terrain. They are making their decisions using metrics that are beyond most of us. Respect!
I was lucky enough to catch a Mineral Basin rope drop this season with like 2 feet of fresh snow - best run of my life. Huge thanks to the Ski Patrollers that make that possible.
My best day of skiing in four decades was on your mountain. It is the best snow on the planet and so close for us in Vegas. You guys got a lot to do. I hope to help and not hinder your efforts. Thanks for keeping us safe.
You guys/gals make it all happen for those of us that love to enjoy the mountain. I don't know how you feel about getting on the tram first thing on a chilly powder day, but for me, that's a pretty good definition of perfect. THANKS GUYS/GALS!
Love Snowbird. Great mountain, I appreciate all that you do patrolling there. Too bad you do not get to free ski more. I see you working your butts off when I'm out there playing. You have a very tough job, they should pay you a lot more. Respect.
What a great job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did it in college in the 70's trying to finish college. Very best job I ever had, irrespective of pay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been skiing 48 years now have skied the top 40 resorts all over the world . Snowbird has the absolute BEST “SNOW “ ANYWHERE in the WORLD! This resort in my opinion is number 1 . It could use 2 more gondolas one 8 passenger and one 6 passenger like BIG SKY has . Maybe 2 more HS chairs 6 passenger. Just goes to show you you don’t have to be the size of Whistler, Park City , Vail or Big Sky . They should take some ideas from Deer Valley for service. DEER VALLEY has the BEST LIFT service, GROOMING and SERVICE in many other ways! Nice to have FREE Hot chocolate and Breakfast Wraps at different bottom locations at base of hills . Never seen that at ANY resort in North America or even St Moritz or Zermatt !
@SportDogg2008 don't you need to take the OEC course which is roughly 80 hours and includes lots of classroom time? I need to figure out if it's possible for me since my normal job is most busy during late summer/fall when they usually take place. Since the class is taught by ski patrol and many of them also do S&R in the summer, the only time seems to be sept-nov. Online would be perfect, then maybe I could swing it.
Yes, it is lots of work! In 1978, I worked at Alta Central, so I know. In some ways, in this canyon, it reminds me of the lifeguards on North Shore, Oahu during huge winter surf. Ski & Surf “bumbs”??? .. Not at all!!!
No. Everywhere sucked last season. I was at Park City/Canyons and Snowbird last February and the coverage was meager. Lots closed. Utah with powder is heaven, though, because it's so dry and easy to ski. Better luck next time.
Chris Fernandez How is Snowbird compared to Brighton, Solitude, and Park City? I didn’t go to Snowbird or Alta last January when I visited and the snow was 90% man made. But yes, Utah is the best place for a skier on a budget. I stayed in a Microtel in SLC and rented an economy car. But the lift tickets were pricey.
I've seen snowboarders patrol here in Utah, but I think it was at Park city. I think it would be extremely difficult to patrol by snowboard at snowbird.
@1:49 Im pretty sure he tosses the little plastic topping to the fuse into the snow, don't mean to be nit-picky, but this is something that should be brought to attention. Put it in your pocket and don't litter.
High traffic. Huge responsibility for patrol. Patrol save my life upon me unable to excit tram. Oxygen wake up halfway down. Alta patrol mobiled my person to the bird ER to stitch my forehead back together. Most difficult day was out skiing bird patrol, wanted me to see the judge for OB Riding. Be smart bird ride in bounds. Avalanche control is controlled but is never a perfect science. Stay controlled areas. Helmet is Wise bird too. Word
Compensation depends on your experience, position and tenure. Research says ~$12 - $18 per hour, keep in mind you this is also a seasonal job for most.
