In this video I have a look at a snowblower that came in with a customer complaint of a surging engine. Pretty common issue on small engines and usually a pretty cheap and easy fix. -Enjoy!

Hey Eric, love your stuff. If your'e ever working on a SMALL engine carb and are going to adjust the idle or high limit screw... don't count how many turns it takes to come out. Count how many turns it takes to turn IN all the way. Then when you reassemble it, you can turn it all the way in and turn it OUT that number of turns.

I’m a diesel mechanic that flips “free but broken” lawn mowers on the side. Briggs and Honda engines are easy. And usually cleaning the carb and topping off the oil (Honda’s have a low oil shut off) fixes most mowers that people leave on the curb. It amazes me the lawn mowers people throw out just need some light Maint and they’re good
@JohnRodriguesPhotographer
@JohnRodriguesPhotographer 4 года назад
@@elmoz71ls15 we live in a throwaway world. You buy a mower and most people if they take it to a mower repair feel like you just buy a new mower for the same money. I feel bad for the people in small engine repair. A lot of the mom and pop shops that I used to go to back in the day are gone. They're run out of business by the big box stores that sell you something and then I'll you need it fixed we don't do that. I understand small engine shops have overhead and they have to charge what they have to charge I'm not complaining about that. It's just best people that you should be able to get it fixed for 5 or $10. I know stupid. They don't work for free either.

Hey Eric, you should get a set of torch tip cleaners and mini brushes on Amazon. They are like $10. They are amazing for cleaning all the jets and little passage ways. Especially on the two cycle carbs. I have the ones I go on my amazon store under small engines. The link is under all my vids.
@GunfighterWyo
@GunfighterWyo 4 года назад
One thing you might consider is to add a fuel shut off valve so the gas can be run out of the carb. They are cheap and I have added them to all of my engine driven equipment. Also, put a fuel filter to keep trash out of the carb. Change the oil and plug once you get the carb cleaned out.

Eric, My condolences on the passing of your Father, I read the obit, and it was very fine. The Snowblower main jet can be carefully cleaned with acetylene Torch cleaner needles, some of the holes in the mixing tube are very small and the tip cleaner set comes with small needle/file cleaners. I always use them to get the crud out of the tiny holes.. a trick to clean the tiny plastic idle jet is to use ONE strand of stranded copper wire to clean out the hair-thin hole in the plastic jet.

If you push the tooth pick too hard up the jet, the tooth pick breaks off. So much for the short cut. Hello from north east Montana. 10 miles from the Canadian border.

I learned the hard way also. So, with all the small gas engines, it's turn off the fuel, let the engine run till it wants to stop, but add choke till almost full choke when it finally stops running. Next time, it fires right up. I do NOT remove the drain bolt on the 2 Honda engines I've got. The little gasket/seal WILL LEAK after that. BTDT! That's a small snow thrower. It's not self propelled. Smashing repair :-D i'm sure you had experence with motorcycles when you were 16, mucky gas is a pain the ass :-( Pity the manufacturer didn't fit a filter in the gas feed tube.

With the ethanol content in our gasoline these days, we just can't leave our seasonal machines sitting for half the year and expect them to work properly. We have to drain our gas tanks or use fuel stabilizer when we store them.
@zx8401ztv
@zx8401ztv 4 года назад
Right Lane Hog I guess we must have less ethanol in our fuel in the uk, i don't have any problems with my old briggs&stratton mower. However there is a rubber diaphragm in the carb that shrinks and causes problems, but it takes years for it to play up. Having said that, it will likely fail now lol :-D

@@zx8401ztv We have 5% Ethanol here in the UK, hence the 'E5' on the pump handle 🤣

I was happy to find E087 non-ethanol gas just to run in my small engines. Ethanol’s hard on them. It costs a bit more but worth it

I recently retired from an electric utility. Our local mechanic maintained the rolling stock of the Genie but for the lift part it had to be taken to a power plant 80 miles away. Very specialized stuff because of OSHA rules.
