Every turn you make should be an S Turn. Proper S Turns require an early edge change.

After learning knee steering and independent foot engagement,sinking and raising body to take pressure off for faster turn was an important piece!It’s in skateboarding ramps too,sinking to put pressure at bottom and rising to relieve it so can turn at top more easily.

Hi Malcolm, I wanted to tell you that I find your videos immensely helpful. I watched your videos all week and took notes, practiced my alignment with my board on indoors, and visualized how to make these turns. I love the technical explanations. I really didn't understand *how* snowboarding even worked and it was really hindering my ability to use my body + board together. Today on the hill I got a private lesson and thanks to you I could tell him I was working on Up Unweighted Turns and he helped me see that I wasn't unweighting it soon enough. I'm working towards an earlier edge change like in this video next. I felt the magic of a gripped edge carve a couple times today, and an almost floating sensation as I switched edges which I never knew was possible! Thank you so much for sharing the magic + science of snowboarding. Sending you love and fresh powder days from Manning Park, BC (a small hill a few hours south of Sun Peaks). Also hitting that paypal tip jar asap. Thanks again. -Stiina

Great video (as always)! One thing I keep getting reminded is (the basics, really) that I'm not doing things the right way cause I'm cared of some speed, speed that is in fact essential to have, and I'm actually making it harder for myself since I'm going too slow (while the beginner in me perceives it as fast) :D So, in 20 days, for my 3rd year of boarding (more like 3rd week as I drive 6 days a year, like a true poor peasant I am) I'm going to employ the "Drink 2 shots before going on the slope" strategy :D

Hi, thanks for the vid. a question which scares me to try early edge change: when sliding on an edge across, the minute you flattened the boared, a skid starts due to gravity, so how come one is not catching and edge when switching edges but continuing with the "across" movment....?

Another great video MM. Your video on "Opening and Closing the Door" taught me to make my first S turns. Does that body movement continue as we progress as riders or does it become more of a Toes up Heals up movement?
@malcolmmoore
@malcolmmoore 2 года назад
Nah the open the door analogy is basically another way of doing s turns, in a more advanced manner than these ones to be honest, this is aimed more at the beginner end of the spectrum to be honest! These are more like large radius s turns for green slopes, but they contain some fundamental movements that can worth going over, and you can still bring them into higher end riding.

I just started learning snowboarding this season and your videos are the best on YT! I've been practicing linking my turns and I find that I struggle with turning from heel to toe a lot more than toe to heel because I feel a lot more comfortable riding on my toe edge. I find that I often over-rotate when turning onto my heel edge because I get afraid of picking up too much speed and just feel less comfortable on that side in general. Do you have any tips on how I can improve on those heel to toe turns?
@CrunchyMcCool
@CrunchyMcCool Год назад
I go flat on board before changing my edge, this was I don’t over due do it. I’m more comfortable heel side, so if I got heel to toe side, I flatten my board then go toe side.. if this makes sense. Do the same thing toe side to heel side. It doesn’t have to be drastic, just a second or so.

hi, whenever you transision to the other side, do you twist the board with a torsion method or do you just transfer weight? I'm picturing the board on slow speed as front leg steering, back leg rudder. with high speeds, do I still need to do that?

Sometimes you need to just back off the edge angle and allow the board to skid. When you hit ice unless you have mega sharp edges it is usually better to just lay off the edging for a moment and skid over that bit!

@malcolmmoore
@malcolmmoore 2 года назад
Flat boarding is always somewhat of a nightmare, because really it only works if the slope is totally flat, if it's slightly camebered you need to be able to rock from edge to edge. I usually start off teaching people how to flat base and then to be able to rock between flat and a slight heel or toe edge. But then they also need to learn to read the slope so they know whether they should be flat or on edge... its always a but of a minefield, if you can get them good at carving they tend to figure things out themselves a bit too...

Going from the beginner turns that he demonstrated to the carving turns that he demonstrated is too much of a leap. The skid turn that he demonstrated actually shows the apex of the turn. What you really want to do is not hold the apex of the turn to Long which is what a lot of inexperienced Riders do. You want to the apex of the turn to be short and transition to your next turn sooner. The body posture he explains works for all types of turns. You must bend your knees through the turn and until the end and stand up out of your turn in order to transition to the next turn. That is weighting and unweighting. Standing up out of your turn frees your board from the snow surface. In combination with weighting and unweighting you must lead with your body much like a skier reaching with his Pole. They call that reaching for your turn. You should reach with your lead arm which for regular foot is left and Goofy is right. This commits your body in front of your snowboard. Much like weaving on a bicycle your body always leads your bicycle follows through. Also known as the pendulum. These are also called slalom turns. The sideslip is basically the Apex of your turn. There's also a component transitioning your weight between your feet. At the apex of the turn the wait will be on your back foot. When transitioning to the next turn your weight will transition to your front foot. And then transition back to the back foot. Front foot back foot front foot back foot. All this happens in concert. After you accomplish the slalom turn then you can start to learn the carve which he calls the S turn. Carving requires a much finer line of balance. Maybe I will do a video. Good video with a lot of good information. If you're accomplished at slalom turns definitely go for the carving turn. If you are beginner Rider don't try to make that leap to soon.
@malcolmmoore
@malcolmmoore 2 года назад
Yeah I see what you're saying, I guess I was trying to show how you can achieve good s turns with some really basic and simple movements, but it's not the beginner progression you would teach after someone has just learnt to turn, but it is a goal to aim for. I just feel like alot of people aren't really aware of how important an early edge change is, and it is something you need for riding steeps and all kinds of advanced terrain, and getting that early edge change is a key part of that! Thanks for the comment though I always enjoy the feedback, one difficulty I have with making videos is that really in every turn there are so many different things going on, so trying to just isolate a few movements to achieve the desired goal can be hard!
