Today we are going to have a discussion on the Health Department. I have a hard time even saying that in a singular sense because every one of them is completely different than the other. As you will learn, the health code can vary by county. So if you are doing business in multiple counties, then you will need to get a permit to operate your shaved ice business in each one of them. Often times you will have one parent county that you do most of your business in, and then you will do temporaries for the rest. We will discuss how this is done and, of course, you can decide which options are applicable to your business.
But even with their varied laws, rules, opinions, etc. there is a way to work with the health department to get what you want and need done. If you have ever worked with the health department in the past, you may have a little chuckle while reading that last sentence. Most people believe, there is no such thing as “getting what you want” when working with the health department. I disagree and will tell you why.
We will discuss what you can expect when you approach your health department. Should you already own a stand before you speak with them? If you do not have a stand or bus at the time, is there a way to know if your health department is going to let you open your shaved ice stand or truck before you make that purchase?
Shaved Ice is a very fun business to be a part of, but when you are investing money into a business and there are no guarantees that the health department is going to pass you, that can be unnerving to say the least. So we will discuss many common practices that will help you through this process.
