Snowshoe ski tour in deep snow
Finally, I’m back on skis. When I was young, I was skiing a lot. I made tours, training and also sled dog races with skis. Later on, when I started working as a guide, I got more dogs and less time for skiing.
The skis were too long to fit into my dog sled and I swap the skis for a pair of snowshoes. The snowshoes were perfect for breaking trails and for work in the camps. There was only one problem… I missed the skis.
Now, I got a pair of snowshoe skis from Skinbased called OAC Skinbased WAP 129. Wide, short skis with skin under. These skis fit on a sled or on snowmobiles. It’s a really good option if you need some kind of backup skis.
In this video, I test these trekking skis for the first time and I’m finally back on skis. I really enjoy it and these skis will follow me during all tours this season. I really looking forward to being able to make shorter skiing tours again.

Nice video Matti! Watch out for those bears!! I just backordered the 160 BC version since I plan to use them hauling a pulk sled and/or carry a pack. Plus I am 220 lbs..... Hopefully they will come in even though we don't have any snow this year. Thanks for the recent content, I will be watching!

Thank you for bringing such a creative and unique view into this video. This is exactly what I needed after a long and stressful week in many ways. It is very refreshing to pause for a moment and get emerged into such a new experience, at least like this. Completely forgot about everything thanks to you. Wish you all the best ;)

I am considering walking the entire Kungsleden with a sledge/pulka in the middle of winter. I have long ago skied in December between Nikkaluokta and Abisko and stood on the top of Kebnekaise on New Year's Eve. It was fantastic! Now I'm older and since I haven't skied in a while I was thinking of using snowshoes instead of skies, until I discovered Skinbased. My questions are: how good is Skinbased for pulling sleds/pulka uphill? How well do they work in harder snow? Finns det löstagbara stighudar som passar Skinbased? (I'll probably have to supplement with crampons for the steepest sections with very hard snow, I suspect.)

Hi @@AlveHenricson ! Looking forward to hearing Matti's thoughts, but in the mean time I hope you don't mind if we hop in here and try to answer your question directly, too! Our skis are designed for skiing on mellow to moderate terrain. With that in mind, our wider trekking skis work very well for pulling a pulk. They also perform on both hard and soft snow in this type of terrain. If you plan to spend a large amount of time on steep terrain, then an additional or different mode of transportation might be advisable. I know a few winter adventures who regularly travel with both Skinbased skis and snowshoes. This allows them to have the better float and glide of a Skinbased ski when traveling flatter ground in deeper snow, and then switch to snowshoes for steeper climbs and descents. As both Skinbased ski and snowshoe bindings use the same winter footwear, switching between the two is pretty simple. Feel free to reach out directly to us if there is anything we can help answer. Cheers! Alan

Nice video. 5 weeks to go and i can also enjoy the wilderniss with my skinbased ski's and pulk. Looking forward to that. Please what was that hole in the ice. Is that pretty dangerous when you go over a frozen lake?
@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA
@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA Год назад
The hole in the ice can come for many different reasons. You should always be careful when crossing frozen lakes or rivers. In this case... The ice is floating on the water, as you know. Then it's snowing on the ice, and that's heavy to carry. The ice gets pushed into the water, and water comes up on top of the ice through cracks and holes. Sometimes, the holes have the size of a tennis ball and sometimes like a kitchen table. Sometimes it's a small one but it looks big because it's black ice in the bottom of the hole. I don't know if this was a good explanation? Around these holes, it's usually good ice, BUT it's water (overflow) under the snow. Lots of people have gotten wet feet and then frostbite on their feet. Be careful and stay safe. It's better to turn around or go around the lake if you hesitate! There is no reset if you make a mistake... /Matti

Hi Matti. Great video! A question: is it possible to replace the skin of the ski when it is worn out? Thanks a lot and many greetings from austria! Markus

@skinbased Год назад
Hi Markus! Just wanted to jump in here quickly and let you know that the skin is replaceable. It does require specific tools though, so it is not a DIY job, but rather a service offered by some of our various dealers and distributors around the globe. Thanks for your interest and question!
