We are Matti and Stina and we live year-round in Jokkmokk, North of the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland with a bunch of Siberian Huskies and 2 Border collies. We run Jokkmokkguiderna which is a small lifestyle company (the two of us and our dogs) that offers guided outdoor tours. During winter we mostly run dog sled tours and summertime it's canoe, hiking tours and wildlife safaris.
Since the Corona pandemic hit us all in spring 2020 we´ve started to post videos more frequently here on RU-vid to try to share our life, knowledge and somehow move the adventure to you instead of your physical self to the adventure. We really like to share our life and experiences with you all but it takes a lot of time to produce videos. If you like to support us and help us to be able to produce more videos we would be very grateful! You can support us either on Buy Me A Coffee, Patreon or PayPal, see links below
Welcome to join us! Stina & Matti and all the doggies
What a beautiful landscape and video! I fell in love with lappland 25 years ago, but could not return there since then. Also was in Jokkmokk. But there will be a next time, never was there in the winter! ❤
Thanks! It’s a really beautiful area. The people who come here are really into helping out with everything… and the dogs… they are just really good team players! :-) /Matti
Sometimes it's hard to dig a hole where you'd need it at the base of a tree, for the technique Stina shows leaning against the tree, because it's where most of the roots are. I've found it useful to turn the other way round and support myself by holding a sapling or a small branch of a bigger tree, which puts the hole further away from the tree. I also find it puts my body in a better position, and tree trunks can be painful to lean against if you've not got a lot of clothing on your back.
Thank you very much. I really am grateful. I am a novice, just bought my first Hilleberg and it's being delivered soon. Can't wait for my first Expedition
I find Icebreaker to be a nice brand. They have all types of woollen, linen and Lyocell clothing for warm or cold weather. Lyocell is made of eucalyptus fibres. They mix the materials in different ways. Lots of Lyocell=good for hot weather, above 60% merino is good for the cold. It's expensive but good
I'm wondering what a 'Johnny and Annie' video would look like 😂❤ Narrative by Matti & Stina - I love you guys. I wish I lived closer. I'd take a winter tour with you.
What a fantastic video, Matti! Your 40 years of experience really shine through in these tips. It's great to hear practical advice that can make a huge difference for both beginners and experienced hikers. I especially appreciated the insights on packing light and the importance of trekking poles. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and helping us avoid common mistakes. Looking forward to more of your expert advice! Cheers, Simon - Tales From Abroad
Tack!
/Stina
Nice video as usual! I live on the West Coast of Norway, where the mosquito situation is not so bad as in the North of Scandinavia, but I have spent some summers in Finnmark, where the mosquito situation can be similar to what we saw in your video. When it happened to be that bad, we usually had a small fire going up wind to the camp, and then we put on some green brush that created a lot of smoke. Usually that helped a lot. The only time the smoke end of the fire is the most popular position! 🙂
I loved this. The point is would make is i still use a trangia. I think the focus of backpacking these days is to go fast and light. But if on a long path, pass by a local shop, you can grab some real ingredients. You can then cook some proper food and spend time relaxing, the trangia is brilliant at that. Real ingredients, cooked up for real food is unbeatable. These days most “Cooksets” are not cook sets, they are Water Boilers. I would urge everyone to slow down, and enjoy some proper food when on the trail from time to time.
When I was young I drank lots of beer , and smoked lots too. I never really got bitten by mozzys... Now I don't smoke or drink and they feast on me... Take care out there.
Absolutely loving this! Thank you so much for sharing. Have been very ill in hospital. Now in a care home. Sending love to you both, and a hug for every dog! Xxxxxxxx
I think the machine with the fan blew the mozzies to Stina’s side of the tent… Crazy how much mozzies you’ve got. Another reason to live on the other side of the world! 😂
Great vid much enjoyed it's like that in my north country and pretty bad here in the mountains of Kentucky USA. Thick clothes and repelant. Benadryl. All part of it. Just don't take a sit fown unless you really have to. All good. Beautiful skies. Next time
