For this weeks machining project, I am making a pattern for a machinist jack. This style of jack I have always loved and used hundreds up times. It's my favorite one but I want to make one that will working with my Kurt 6" milling vise since the original is a bit too tall. This pattern will be used to make a sand mold and then cast with cast iron at the ‪@windyhillfoundry5940‬
This will will be the master pattern and I'm sure I'll make making some slight adjustments to it as I move forwards. There will be another video soon on the foundry day with Clarke.

My Dad died about 12 years ago. He left Me with an old logan 8 inch shaper. You have motivated me to put it together and get it running which i did this weekend . I am 55 now and remember when I was about ten years old and he brought it home. The end of the ram was bare and had no clapper on it and He had to make everything on the end of the ram. I though about My dad the whole time I was working on it. I actually mounted a vise and took a few cuts.

I would be surprised of Clarke would pull the pattern from the sand due to it's weight. I would rap the pattern to make the clearances allowing for an easy pull then put a bottom board over the pattern, flip the drag then pull the drag from the pattern. The weight of the pattern would make the pattern stay on the bottom board as the drag is lifted from the pattern. Easier that way. Yes, I've done that before. Good luck on the pour!

A telescoping differential screw would be real slick on this. My thinking is that since one screw goes inside the other it could fit flush into the base and still have a sizable reach. I’ve seen this on other machinist jacks.

I studied in civil engineering, but did my drafting classes (1970's) in mostly mechanical which stressed the radiuses and smooth non-vertical lines if possible to make casting easier. Another great video, So I was watching this and it reminded of a similar problem I had on a tool set I used on my wood lath. If the pillar section wasn’t bolted down but instead was threaded and had a shaft with complete grove sitting into the plate, then a set screw holding it in. Turning the pillar would raise the threaded post with any top support of your choice! Saving a lot of space, bottom plate thickness could also be changed to allow more threaded capacity.

This is probably the most enjoyable video of yours I have watched. I could tell that you were really enjoying yourself. Casting letters small enough to fit is hard. The problem is getting the sand to pack around and release the pattern without damage. It is hard to repair small letters in the sand mold. My recommendation is to engrave your logo in the finished stand. Bob

It seems like the long way around to get what you want. I think I would have taken the original and dipped it in paraffin. Then I would use wax to build up the slot so that you can machine it the size you want out of the casting. Then I would use plaster of paris to make a mold. A little heat and the original part should fall right out. Put the plaster mold in some sand and pour your metal.

You could turn the original jack upside down and tap it completely down into a clay block. After removing it from the clay, you could then pour the depression full of epoxy resin and have a very sturdy, long lasting pattern. That method would give you the exact draft and dimensions as the original. The only machining that would then be required, is to drill the hole down through the center for the jack stem. Also, you could make several patterns in one pour of the epoxy resin by repeating the first step and mass produce the bases. This would allow you could get several epoxy resin bases in one ram box to pour your iron. I used to be a molder at a foundry in Montana, so I'm pretty sure this method would work great for you. Just a thought after watching all the milling required to make your first pattern.
@AMRosa10
@AMRosa10 2 года назад
I think Adam said that he was looking to make a similar style jack with a lower height, so that he could use it to support a piece of round stock that was also flat against the base of his milling vises, etc. The original Armstrong is a little too tall and requires him to lift the stock in the vise. The slot in the original was also for 3/4" hardware, and he wanted to use 5/8ths, as that is the hold down system he has. Your suggestion would be great for making an exact replica, but Adam was making a few dimensional modifications as well.
