The other song that is inextricably linked to this one is Tommy James and the Shondells' "Crimson and Clover." Both were released in 1969, and both left a lasting impression on those of us who were around to hear them at the time. But don't miss out on one of TJ&S's earlier hits, "I Think We're Alone Now" (from 1967). Me and my girlfriend at the time, that was "our song."

Tommy James was a born again Christian when he wrote this. The lyric “when He looks down” refers to God looking down on all of his children in every nation. The lyric “the sun is arising” can also be “the Son is arising”, referring to Jesus.

We saw Tommy James at an oldies concert in Bost.about 30 years ago. They sang all their hits and it was awesome great night. They sang "Mony Mony" twice that night and the second time Tommy James was incredible. He left the stage and went to side of the stage where quite a few fans with disabilities were located and for about 5 minutes he walked among the wheelchairs card shook hands and hugged fans. It was an incredible sight , kudos to Tommy James for that. While he was off stage the band kept the song going until he returned to the stage.

I just saw Tommy James in person last week in a small theatre-in-the-round in Phoenix, and he still sounds exactly like the record in person. The place was jammed full, and when he did “Hanky Panky,” (His 1st big hit), the roof almost came off. Everyone was up dancing. If you ever get a chance to see him in person, go! He’s had so many big hits…and now they’re making a movie about his life, because they found out after signing with their record label that they were run by the New York mob. They had to beg for their $ sometimes. Lost out on MILLIONS! So glad you young people found out about him.

In 1987, the singer Tiffany remade "I Think We're Alone Now" to number 1 on the Billboard charts. It was replaced at number 1 by another Tommy James remake, "Mony Mony", by Billy Idol. Never happened before, and has never happened again. On a side note, I dated Tommy James' niece while I was in college. Never met him though.

Found this online “In a 1985 interview in Hitch magazine, James said the title of the song came to him while he was reading the Biblical Book of Revelation: I took the title from the Book of Revelations [sic] in the Bible, reading about the New Jerusalem. The words jumped out at me, and they're not together; they're spread out over three or four verses. But it seemed to go together, it's my favorite of all my songs and one of our most requested.” “According to James's manager, James was actually inspired by his readings of the Book of Ezekiel, which (he remembered as) speaking of a blue Shekhinah light that represented the presence of the Almighty God, and of the Book of Isaiah and Book of Revelation, which tell of a future age of brotherhood of mankind, living in peace and harmony.”

This is SUCH a fabulous Hippie song. Flower Power, Peace, Love and Understanding, everybody get together try to love one another right now, good vibrations, let it go, open yourself up to the possibilities, everyone is beautiful, we can change the world, ALL THAT!! It's a tragedy that it couldn't stand up to the onslaught of "the establishment", moneyed interests, military interests and the general unenlightened state of humanity at this time. But, for a while there, there was a slim chance. Who knows if we'll ever even get another one?!

Amber, I found this: What's the meaning behind the song Crystal Blue Persuasion? He was inspired by his reading of the book of Ezekiel which speaks of the Blue Shekinah Light which represented the presence of the Almighty God and the Books of Isaiah and Revelation which speaks of a bright future of a brotherhood of mankind living in peace and harmony. This is where he got his idea from. I have been listening to this song for so many years, and I never knew that. Very Cool.

Great reaction, Jay and Amber! Love this song! INFO FROM SONG FACTS: 《When we asked James if "Crystal Blue" is a reference to the Book of Revelation, he replied: "Yes, it is. It's out of the Bible. The imagery was right out of Chapter 19 of the Book of Revelation, about the lake of crystal, and just what John sees. The imagery was just right there. 'Crystal blue persuasion,' although those words aren't used together, it was what the image meant to me." The lyrics, "It's a new vibration," are about James becoming Christian, but many listeners had their own interpretation. He explained: "Of course, everybody thinks if they don't understand what you're talking about it must be about drugs. But it wasn't. We were going through a real interesting time back then, and a very wonderful time. Everybody in the band, by the way, became Christian. And we're very proud of it. And 'Crystal Blue Persuasion' was sort of our way of saying that in a kind of pop record way."》

"What did the song Crystal Blue Persuasion mean? He was inspired by his reading of the book of Ezekiel where it speaks of the Blue Shekinah Light which represented the presence of the Almighty God and the Books of Isaiah and Revelation where it speaks of a bright future of a brotherhood of mankind living in peace and harmony."

I love Crimson and Clover. I use to borrow my older sister’s 45 vinyl single. I was a kid, she was a teenager.😊

I was listening to this song in a plane years many ago. I had a window seat and we were above these beautiful clouds, and the sun was setting. Freaked me out! lol Had some type of spiritual experience. Was intense.

Same sentiment of peace and love would be Jackie DeShannon's "What the World Needs Now is Love" From the mid 60's also.

The title of the song came to James while he was reading The Bible's Book of Revelation, according to James in a 1985 interview in Hitch magazine: I took the title from the Book of Revelations in the Bible, reading about the New Jerusalem. The words jumped out at me, and they're not together; they're spread out over three or four verses. But it seemed to go together, it's my favorite of all my songs and one of our most requested. “Crystal Blue Persuasion” was one of those album hopefuls, spurred on by a chance encounter. “We were playing a college in Atlanta,” James remembers. “Afterwards, we would do meet and greets, sign autographs and stuff. A kid ran up to me with a poem. And he said, ‘Tommy, please just take it with you.’ He was really fanatical about it, so I said, ‘OK.’ “As a songwriter, you’re always looking for interesting word combinations and stuff. And the title of this poem was ‘Crystal Persuasion.’ I just thought that was a fascinating title. I had no idea what it meant, but it sounded very profound.” James realized afterwards that the title fit with his budding interest in religion, with the words sourced from the Biblical Book of Revelation. “I was also going through a change in my life,” James says. “I was becoming a Christian at that moment. So this all seemed to fit together. We took it back to the hotel room and wrote it. We didn’t really use the poem, just the title. To make the rhyming scheme work, I needed one more syllable, and ‘blue’ sounded like the right word and it became ‘Crystal Blue Persuasion.’ Eddie Gray played guitar for me then, and he came up with that little riff. Mike Vale and I wrote the lyrics and it just came together, just kind of fell out of our face right there in the hotel room.” - Excerpted from "Behind the Song"- unknown date in 2021

That's an acoustic guitar you're hearing on this recording. Its being played in the upper register which gives it somewhat of a sound like a mandolin.
