I have used the S5, S1 and S5II. The S1 has the best video quality. The 5,9K and 6K Open Gate are better than on the S5II. When using V-Log they are close, but the S1 has slightly more details (true details, not sharpening), more micro-contrast and less digital sharpening. With the other profiles, they are not even close, especially in 4K where the S5II has very low details (some details are too much accentuated and some are not at all) and much more digital sharpening. Almost like the picture was upscaled from a lower resolution. I don't know what Panasonic has done at the hardware or software level with the S5II, but the magic is gone for me.

Interesting. There are at least a few people talking about this (it came up during the CineD testing of the S5ii), that in order to implement the phase detect autofocus there has been a slight penalty in the image for the S5ii. I have an S1 and I do think it has a great image, but I’ve definitely been tempted by the S5iiX for certain functions. I think I’ll hold off for now, newer is not always better.

What they have done is switch to PDAF which they always said would result in a drop in image quality. They were forced to because internet whiners aka influencers were going wah wah wah…there is no pdaf in Panasonic..it’s not as good as Sony because when I pop my head in and out of the frame in a test setting it doesn’t immediately snap to focus. Wah wah wah. And naive buyers were actually listening to them. So Panasonic had no choice but replace contrast detect with pdaf resulting in a fall in image quality. I for an am happy my S1 is contrast detect. Image quality Is second to none.
@aiseurnae5976
@aiseurnae5976 6 месяцев назад
@@TrollMeister_ I agree, too much people complained about the AF, so they finally added PDAF. However, I'm sure the fall in image quality is not because PDAF, some people reported the pre production firwmare of the S5IIX never had this overhsarpening and chroma noise reduction, also the BRAW (external) is excellent with no oversharpening nor smoothed out details. V-log is also much less impacted than the standard profile so the most likely reason for this bad rendering is Panasonic wanted to be like Sony with very sharp footage to attract more people. Very bad move.

@@aiseurnae5976 I think your opinion is correct because there is no need to sharpen in these large sensors as they already gather much more information then mobile cameras.

Thanks for that. I've seen hit in micro-contrast, color and overall punch in Panasonic camras with stills when they went to the 20.3mp sensor in M43, an I wondered if by almost doubling the pixels from the S1 if the images might be mush.

I bought the s1 in the spring for $800 USD and I primarily use it as a stills camera. I have no brand loyalty and I typically shoot with Olympus, Ricoh, and Sony. In my opinion, the S1 is the best value full frame available on the market, especially for stills shooters. It has the best out of camera colors I've ever seen. People dislike it because of the video autofocus, but the autofocus is very quick for still. I typically shoot mine with adapted m-mount lenses, but the stills autofocus on my sigma lenses is fantastic. It is big and it is heavy, but if size and weight aren't big issues for you, I'd encourage you to try one. Build quality is excellent. The body is spacious and allows for a lot of customization. The viewfinder is beautiful and high res. I hope Lumix releases and s1 ii, so the price of the s1 will fall even lower... I might buy another one... lol.

It is a great camera. Some people did not like it because of the size and weight, but the last two pro cameras of Nikon, the Z9 and Z8, are even bigger than the S1/S1R/S1H, and I don't see Nikon users complaining about it.

@waynerm002
@waynerm002 3 месяца назад
The Z9 and Z8 didn’t exist back in 2019 when the S1 was launched. Mirrorless cameras were bout being smaller and lighter than DSLRs, the S1 was doing something unexpected when it came to mirrorless. Here we are almost 5 years later, having a camera which can shoot more than 30 minutes of video, requires it to be larger and heavier than early mirrorless systems. Today, the size and weight is normal, if the AF was great back then, they would have gotten more attention. I liked the look and feel of the S1H, even though it cost more than my Z6 II. I had a Panasonic HC-X1 for video, great camera, started my YT channel with it, started to do video on the Nikon Z6 then got the Z6 II to use while traveling, was more familiar with Nikon on the photo side and the Z6/6II were better than my D500 for video while traveling. By the time I learned about the S/1S1H, I was already annoyed with the video AF on the Z6 II and I wasn’t going to spend more money on another system with poor AF, so I went Sony. Today, I have the Z8 which is fantastic but, lacks a flip forward screen for filming myself so I kept the FX30 which has a fan and handles long recording in the South East Asia hot temps. I thought about the S5 IIX however, I’m waiting to see what the S1 II series brings to the table, now that I have a better understanding of the video side of things, I feel I may want to have a Panasonic in the fold.

I've had the S1 for since 2020 and the best things going for it is how similar your 'muscle memory' of where all the dials and buttons are when using it, especially as you have the G9. Yes it's a beast with the weight comparison to the S5 system (which I also have) but each time I want to do any stills I prefer to use the S1. The firmware updates that Panasonic have done over the last three years have all been solid and added more confidence in the system for me. I also did the V-Log upgrade for it about a year ago and that was also worth the investment.
@jayforcinema

I use the Lumix S1, with the 24-105, 50 1.8 and 85 1.8 native lenses. It's a heavy beast of a camera, weighing more than my GH5 and 12-35 combined. If the weight isn't a bother for you, it is a joy to use. I have it with a cage, and it is absolutely lovely. The low light and IBIS are just incredible, coming from MFT. Stills are gorgeous, though you have to decide whether a non-flippy screen is worth it to you. And it takes a CFExpress card (I use the Angelbird SE 512 GB), which I much prefer over SD cards for robustness and space. The V-Log is at par with any of the Lumix S long GOP camera footages. The only two 'downsides' are that the camera and the lenses all weigh a ton, and you might find yourself not taking it out as much because it's a hassle to carry around, and you won't find the AF any better than the AF in G9 (to its credit it's just as good too). If you're debating between S1 and S5, have a look at Luca Bono's comparison, it was one of the nicest comparisons I could find (Josh Cameron had done a decent one too, I think). Unless you need AF while running between crowds of people or people who are addicted to running around the camera in and out of frame, the AF is more than sufficient. Definitely hyper capable and persistent for photography work. As someone who has used so many Panasonic systems, you'll feel at home I'm sure. As for me, I absolutely adore the Lumix S1 and plan to get two more next year, if my plans for a photography side-business materialise. It's a tank and shoots like it.

I got one, it's awesome but I would suggest getting the original s5 or s5ii instead. The camera is very heavy, battery isn't great, screen ain't articulating and one slot is SQD which can be expensive. Otherwise it's great, I like the 6K option with the latest firmware.

I am also looking to get one, I gather the mk2 firmware improved the camera no end from the camera that was originally reviewed. I want to get into L Mount and acquire some L Mount glass. My thoughts on this: If you are switching to another system you should look at the lenses first. What type of lens(es) would you like to use. Does the L-mount offer these lenses? If yes, then the S1 will be a good pick, if not, perhaps you should look at other brands. Every brand has great cameras, but with some brands you are more limited in the lens line up.

To be fair, all the brands mirrorless systems are pretty fully featured. L mount has all your standard zooms from 14-200mm, a prime set up from 18-85 from Panasonic and up to 135 with sigma. You have tele zooms from 100-400, 150-600 and 60-600. Pretty much all of those are weather sealed and there isn't a whole lot missing for most use cases. And well Sony of course is all filled out, Canon and Nikon and Fuji are pretty much filled out as well. So I agree with the line of thinking but its not really going to help for many people.
@-arcane-
@-arcane- 11 месяцев назад
@@jockslifeatliftvideoproduc8528 I agree with you about that, but it is not just about focallength. Some lenses are just special, sharpness, rendering, features etc.

Assuming the cheap S1s are due to the S5 mkII and the rumours a while back about a possible S1H mk II. Still nothing official on any new Lumix since the S5. I wonder if they need to iron out some bugs to make sure it is as well received as the S5II was.

I moved down from the s1 to the s5 because of the weight, especially with the 24-105mm. Not the size, just the weight. Its an amazing camera/ lens combo, the viewfinder will spoil you to the point that you'll hate every other camera. For pro work it's properly worth using one xqd card and using the SD for backup but personally, I never had an SD card fail on me. *knock on wood* If you will be rough with the camera s1 is the better choice, much better build than the s5. Its all about the weight, if you are used to light m43 setups you might hate such a heavy and hefty camera, even with a light prime. Still miss the s1 on some days, vintage lenses with the viewfinder are chefs kiss. With the paid update you get 6k open gate, which is something to consider. Only using it for photography might be a bit of a waste making the s5 the better choice. You will shot videos on either camera you pick up at some point. I would rent it for a weekend if possible :)

The S1 is a great 10 bit 4:2:2, 4K camera. It’s certainly all you need for most photography and RU-vid video work. If you’re shooting weddings, you’ll want a newer model with phase detect. If you’re using crazy LUTs for colour grading, or shooting a run and gun documentary where you’re messing up exposure, you might want an internal RAW camera like the BlackMagic series.

My comment is a bit late but for what it is worth: I was in the EXACTLY the same spot as you, a year ago. I had been looking at the S5 for a while, trying to figure out if the low quality EVF would bother me. (It would because I am a huge EVF user.) I ended up ordering the S5 (S5II wasn't quite out yet, or was barely out) and shortly after I cancelled it because I realized that S1 is what I wanted all along. I shoot profesionally, and like you, I was going to move into the FF. I got a open box S1 with the 24-105 at a great deal here in Canada. No regrets. I added Sigma 35mm 1.4 (my favorite focal length), and a Panasonic 24mm 1.8. One thing I did figure out is that I want to still run both systems. MFT is an amazing ecosystem and it compliments the Panasonic FF line. S1R is too photocentric, and the S1H too video centric if you buy only one. And I shoot 50/50 video and photography. I also love its size as it fits well in the hand. Rich on buttons and features. It made me realize that its style of screen is my favorite (I don't turn the camera towards myself much). The only thing I don't like about the S1 is that it has far more moire in photos than my MFT cameras.

Bit late to the party with this comment. I was lucky to get my hands on a pre production LUMIX S1 a few months before launch (was a LUMIX ambassador). I still use the same pre production body as my A cam on shoots to this day. The stabilisation is fantastic and prefer it in hand over the S1H, the image quality is also fantastic. It’s been updated numerous times since launch and the only gripe I have is that you can’t shoot at 100fps in variable frame rate or “high speed video” mode, you’re limited to 125fps. This can sometimes be a pain with artificial lighting as you can’t drop the shutter to 1/100sec and you get flicker. I switch to an S5 body when this is an issue. My pre production body has held up extremely well to the elements and I regularly use the body in dusty, freezing and piping hot environments, it’s never failed on me, even though is absolutely battered now. I use the 24-105mm lens, a 50mm and the Sigma 16-28mm. My 24-105mm is like the body, absolutely hammered and the front glass has a number of stone chips (motorsport) however this hasn’t affected the image too much. If you haven’t already pulled the trigger, I think at the current price point, its a no brainer. Steve x

I don't know what they are going for in the Australian market, but if you are going to invest in a FF Panasonic, you might as well pay a bit more and get a lovingly used S1R to take full advantage of the larger sensor by going to 47.3MP. It would basically be a FF version of your G9 with more than twice the resolution. In the US, a used S1R body is typically $200-300 more expensive than a standard S1.

The S1 is not much more than the S5 at the moment on the used market. It has a better EVF and some people prefer the flip up screen but it is big and bulky so some might prefer the S5.

If you wear glasses then S1 is excellent due to the large, high resolution EVF. The S5 is substandard in this regard (as is the s5II).

I use S1 to take pictures of my kids. Face AF is pretty good with 50mm 1.4 but only ok with 24-105mm f4. I wonder if f1.8 primes would be a better alternative.

Love my S1! Bang for buck you simply can't beat it. I considered Nikon, Canon and Sony full frame mirror-less but they all felt like plastic toys for those with girly hands. The S1 is a tank and built to last. I have no issues with the autofocus at all as I only do still photography. Video and action/sport photography don't interest me at all. I also prefer the tilt screen over the flippy screen of the S5 and the EVF of the S1 is simply the BEST.

I just caught this video. I came up on a couple of L mount lenses that I can't really adapt well due to that size, so I bought one of these and it should be here this week. It should be a huge upgrade from a Nikon z30. But I'll give it a shot and get back to ya on this.

@@grantrobertdavies I've used it now. I'm still editing the video down and my photo skills need a bit of work. This thing is a beast. I ordered a cage for it to mount a monitor, that just adds weight and size to it. The focus assist onboard works well enough that I could strip that down a bit. I'm pretty happy trying to work with it. I'm using a helios 44m and a Surui night walker 35mm on it. I would like to try an AF lens on it, but I've to paint some cars to pay for that first. Overall though, I'm happy with what it can do for me. It humbling, but I knew I had some things to work on going into this.

The same situation as yours here: I’m a happy G9 User willing to use both Lumix Systems. S5 would be an ergonomic downgrade from G9! S1 is a great Camera, was able to Find a brand new copy (a photographer’s backup camera) for 1000 usd! Amazing professional body. Things to consider: video autofocus less reliable than G9; IBIS for video worse than G9; less frames per second; no G9 style pre-capture; no 1/3200 SS meaning you might need an ND filter to shoot fully open at a beach…

Just stumbled upon this video as I am in the same boat as you. I'm really thinking about picking one up. All the photos I've seen produced by this camera are stunning and I mainly shoot stills. I'm not interested in video and price seems right for this.

Update: purchased a Panasonic Lumix S1 a couple weeks ago and couldn't be more pleased. Got mine in "like new" condition at a great price. Loving the IQ from this thing. It's a beast of a camera and a bit heavy but I don't find it overwhelming at all. Excellent and underrated camera for sure 👍🏼👍🏼

I wanted to move from Fujifilm X line to Panasonic S line, cause I think the S line is INCREDIBLE value for money. Sadly, Panasonic and Capture One don't talk much, specifically and especially regarding tethered shooting. You can't, at least for now shoot tethered to Capture One with Panasonic.

The S1 has a small leg up on the S5 for strobist photographers - in that it has a 1/320th flash sync speed - vs- 1/200 on the S5...then there's the S1H that has an anti alias filter - which is also nice for stills & video shooters alike, but the S1 doesn't have that. I think over all - with the software updates, the S5 is a better camera and video tool than the S1 - plus the SQD card for the S1 is too expensive for me. I've had the S5 for a few years and opted not to upgrade yet. The new S5ii does not have multi exposure mode - like the S1 and S5 do - it lets you shoot up to four flash shots and the camera blends the shots together with only new areas of luminosity added (in a single RAW file!) this allows me, as a real estate photographer, to use just one small flash to light multiple area in one frame....kinda bummed they dropped that function in the S5ii

The Panasonic S1R is insanely good value. I wanted a camera to work with my manual Zeiss lenses. My original intention was to sell my Fujifilm GFX100s and lenses, and buy a Z8, and run a Z8 and D850 as my 2 primary systems. But The Z8 is overkill for my needs, and I was going to lose so much money on the GFX it just wasn't worth it. So looking at the available options. I really hate the ergonomics of the Z7/Z7II and Sony s7rIII/IV. I really love the ergonomics of the S1R, and it has a good EVF and LCD. So I can easily use manual focus.

If your looking to stay with Panasonic than I would say go for the S1...I have never owned any full frame Panasonic bodies or glass....I am lens centric so its Cannon or Nikon for me...the eosR or RP both fit the bill for me in Canon...as does the Nikon D750...Canon 6D and or a low shutter count Sony a7s or a7sII. All are usually less than a $1000 here in Bangkok (the eos R is a bit more)...If you dont get along with the S1 you can always sell it... cheers 8:11

Once a Panasonic, always Panasonic. S1 camera is awesome. Lumix cameras is perfect for all those who know what they need and NOT what they re told to. If you like quality you turn to Panasonic. I use G9 and S5ii and both re perfect. My cousin owns the S1 and he thinks he has find gold! Brillinati ergonomics, color science, tropicalization, stabilization, this is a serious type of cameras. Not a toy. Buy it ASAP. Great video of yours, as always...

I would prefer the S5 over the S1. It's smaller. In Germany it's less expensive. It runs the new and larger Batteries that also work in the G9. It has the same sensor and image quality as the S1 and it has two SD-card slots. S1 advantages are the larger Battery if you need the longer runtime, a larger Viewfinder and the impressive size that might help in some situations when directing groups of people to do what you want. Personally, I would prefer the S5-II over the S5. I usually buy the new cameras very early, pay the higher price and use them for a pretty long time. I did that with the GH3, GH5 and now I have the GH6 that probably don't last that long depending on what Panasonic shows in the near future.

Other than the weight, the S1 is almost lerfect for Astrophotography. Illuminated buttons, great timelapse functions, batteries life is pretty solid, and great weatgerproofing are all reasons I decided to hold onto it rathe than trade uo to the s5ii. Better CAF would be great but all of its other pros outweigh that for me.
