Panasonic S1R vs Sony A7R iii: Ultimate Camera Comparison 

Hey guys great video as usual! Hey not sure if you guys know this but to have your settings and image preview always be shown in the EVF - Go to the "Gear" menu, then Monitor/Display 1, then "Constant Preview" - turn that ON! Then you'll see your exposure in real time like you would on Sony. Hope that helps! Not sure why they have that off by default.

Panasonic has delivered an excellent FF first effort. Of course they learned a huge amount with their m43 line. Now we just need more lenses though they seem to have a good start with the Sigma portion of the L cabal.

Are you sure there is a colour difference!?!?!? It seems to me like the Panasonic is half a stop underexposed vs the Sony. The shade of the red is just darker/lighter. The skintone also appears to be a case of exposure, notice the shadow areas in the eye socket and/or the nostril/chin. The Sony appears to be more accurately exposed (for portraiture purposes in this case).

In Canada, there is an important difference in price between those two cameras... ($1800 CDN)!!!

Nice review. I think when it comes to color, the lens plays a part. I found Leica lenses go nicely with the Sony a7RIII. What do you guys think ?

Guys, wrong info at 7:50. The Panasonic is not the first camera that shoots Video at 4k 60fps. The Fujifilm X-T3 came out in 2018 and does do that perfectly at 10bit.

which one is it that you take a shot, and then can change settins right away? I hate the Sony speed on that. Is the Pan better with memory handling?

My understanding is that the VLOG update for the Panasonic will ONLY be available for the S1 and will not be available to the S1R.

The problem with your ISO comparison when comparing to their siblings was the siblings were better lit. So of course they'd have a much more favorable ISO results. Here's an example. For the stills with the Macbeth color chart in them, did you use the grey patch to white balance both or were both cameras using their own preset wb?

The Sony A7r Mark IV has just put Hasselblad, Fuji & Panasonic in to Chapter 11. While many Canon & Nikon users are trying to dumb their equipment & jumping to Sony or that Fuji GFX 100. While many beginners & amateurs are upset with Sony. Their A7r Mark III has plumped. Remember, buy a Sony is like buying a German car. The resale values are bad. Lucky for me, I get them free due to freelist for working pro.

When wearing good quality headphones, the sound effect on the many of the wipe-type transitions gets to the point of punishing. My guess is you don't want your viewers starting to flinch at video transitions. Hopefully if you find it necessary to keep using them, you can reduce the audio level by about 80%. On a positive note, one thing I do enjoy about your reviews, is that you don't waste time getting to the image comparisons. For that, much appreciated. As for the cameras, for what the A7r III can be purchased for at certain times of year (below $2500) it looks quite good; unbeatable for the price. I just picked up an EOS R from an authorized Canon dealer for $1800 (and it's currently available for less grey market ) . Point is, price really comes into play, and while I'm really rooting for Panasonic's offerings, the cost of acquisition makes it a non-starter. They needed to pull an A7 III move to get in the game; i.e., over-deliver on the camera (which was pretty much accomplished) and then, release it at a price point that made jaws drop (as what happened with the A7 III). As for the EOS R, there was no way I was willing to pay $2300 when the A7 3 was available for hundreds less, and in some respects, was a better performer. It didn't take long for the street price on the R to plummet. Hopefully the street price of the S1 and S1r will fall in line with their Sony and Canon counterparts, and the market will reward Panasonic for their efforts.

I still dream at nights of full frame Samsung NX2, what a monster that would have been, with IBIS and Samsung colour science, God.

Since S1R can shoot 6k I would like to ask: if I shoot video /picture without zooming with 6k and crop later, is the quality same as those non-6k shoot with zoom in 100mm or 200mm?

Are the images you're comparing jpeg or RAW? If they're jpeg, you've introduced in-camera processing of the images. If they're RAW & you've post processed them, that's not an equal comparison either. Using unprocessed RAW files is about the only way to really do an apples to apples comparison. Interesting video nonetheless.

Neither of these is up to snuff for where we should be in the offerings. When Canon was on q roll with the 5D MK III, everything since seems to be a mediocre effort of strengths and weaknesses, Canon included.

This is certainly not a good review or a meaningful comparison. For starters, when you do a dynamic range test, and you admit upfront that the conditions are far from ideal (no harsh light or strong shadows), then why not wait for the conditions to improve, so that the test is meaningful rather than proceeding anyway? Overall, from the cringe opening to the pointless tests, you can certainly do better.

Not a pro review... a lot of subjective opinions. The S1, for example, appeared a bit "contrastier" because it was underexposed, certainly not because of sensor performance. On the other hand, where are the lenses for the Panny S1? So far there are close to 100 FE mount lenses made by Zeiss, Voightlander, Sony, etc., but nothing even close to that number on the Panasonic side.

Two minutes in and it's pathetic ... I'm outta here.

Sony's highlight roll off is absolutely disgusting. The Panny is superb.

The Lumix 'should' be better but it just isn't. They're late to market with an expensive and limited system so they needed to blow Sony out the water... Didn't happen. By the time the S1R has a decent lens line-up, Sony will be releasing the A7R4! I don't see how they ever catch up now. It's a shame because I love the S1R. Beautifully made camera.

You guys need to learn about cameras before doing such horrible comparisons and ridiculous statements. The colors on the Sony are closer to reality so don't let your personal bias confuse things. Also the Sony is cleaner in high iso while the Panasonic is always a bit under exposed Ala Fuji cheating but of course... you noticed that, right??if only youtube stopped recommending this channel....

The Panasonic is a brick. Way too large, way too heavy - and technically not a smidgen better than the Sony. Buy one, use it as a barbell.
