When this song came out, it set a record. The BeeGees were the first band, since the Beatles, to have 5 songs in the top 10, at the same time. The BeeGees, were at their peak, when this came out.
So much misinformation. This song was released a year after the event you are referring to. Barry Gibb was the COMPOSER of 5 songs in the top 10 at the same time. And he did not set a record because as you said, the Beatles (Lennon/McCartney) already had the record. Goodness gracious. I can't believe so many likes for this post. People will believe anything they read.
Richard, nice story, and The Bee Gees DID write 5 songs in the Top 10 all at once on February 25, 1978, when they had #1) "Stayin' Alive" Bee Gees #2) "(Love Is) Thicker Than Water" Andy Gibb #5) "Emotion" Samantha Sang #8) "Night Fever" Bee Gees #10) "How Deep Is Your Love" Bee Gees. AND "Tragedy" WAS the Bee Gee's 5th of 6 #1's in a row when it topped the charts on March 24, and 31, 1979. However, this was 13 months after Barry and the brothers had 5 of the Top 10 songs.
I'm glad you're diving into their older stuff. Next up should be Run to Me, Nights on Broadway, I Started a Joke, Gotta Get A Message to You. Just to name a few! 😊😊
Bee Gees are One of my favorites, however, but this song is not. If you want to hear a jamming song and one of their batter hits, please do jive talking.
I'm still surprised that you've not reacted to any of their earlier stuff from the sixties like "Massachusetts" "I've just got to get a message to you" "Words" "Don't Forget to Remember" a very different sound they had back then. Much love from England 🏴
All of their early songs, in the 60’s were sooooo phenomenal! Words, Where would I be without my Woman, N.Y. Mining Disaster, To Love Somebody, First of May.........
The story of the thunderclap: Stuck for a convincing thunderclap sound, Barry Gibb cupped his hands over a microphone and made an exploding noise with his mouth. Several of these sounds were then mixed together, creating the large boom heard on this song.
My absolute favorite song of the Bee Gees is "Lonely Days". It's an older song from when they focused more on harmonies than Barry's falsetto. I remember first hearing it off of my sister's 45, played on a record player back when I was in first grade. Memories!
My childhood (under 10) favorite Lonely Days. I didn’t have a stereo in my bedroom as a youngster but a small AM/FM transistor radio, small enough to sneak under my pillow, allowed me to hear music. Fell in love with music because of my sneaky habits that my dad would have punished me, if I was caught, lol.
There's a live version of the Bee Gees performing their hit song "You Should Be Dancing" with their brother Andy. That would be a cool version of that song to react to.
The Gibb brothers wrote both "Tragedy" and "Too Much Heaven" (another American #1), in an afternoon off from making the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band movie in which they were starring. Then in the evening they wrote another American #1 single, "Shadow Dancing" for their brother Andy Gibb. Stuck for a convincing thunderclap sound, Barry Gibb cupped his hands over a microphone and made an exploding noise with his mouth. Several of these sounds were then mixed together, creating the large boom heard on this song.
At the concert when they did this song, there was a big explosion with pyrotechnics and stuff. SO cool for my 4th grade self to see in 1979. One of the best times I remember with my Daddy. He got me the posters of them and a program and a concert shirt, too. I thought it was the coolest thing ever!!
@@loristone9242 Saw spirits having flown in Miami 79 pouring rain at the Baseball Stadium - The explosion was Barry belching He spoke about it afterward!
Amber doesn't seem too into what is probably my favorite BeeGees song. It did hit #1 in the U.S. and several other countries. I've been listening to this song for over 40 years and I still love it.
This has the distinction of reaching number 1 here in the US twice, separated by a week in between. I had work my Dad hard to get him to convince my Mom to let me get the album. Trivia, the explosion was done by Barry with his mouth because nothing else worked like he wanted.
Just my white 2 cents: I was born in 1969. I know All About Bee Gees music. This is there best song ever because it captured everything they are good at-power.
Tragedy was so great in the clubs, pumping out on great club speakers. Even the fellas that always stand along the walls of the clubs came out for this one.
This was one of their hits that ended up labeling their music as “disco”. Incorrectly, I might ad. Thank you for playing it. This takes me back to my youth, and roller skating to disco music. They are still the greatest!
Actually their “Disco image” mainly came from their Saturday Night Fever hits. This song was released a couple of years later. I would agree that this song ‘Tragedy’ isn’t really “Disco”.
@@giovannib.9260 No, it isn’t. I absolutely agree with you. As I said, it was labeled “disco” incorrectly. At least where I come from in rural California. Do you have any idea how many people were “closet fans” of the Bee Gee’s because of the disco label? But, as far as the era it comes from, it does remind me of the roller rink on Saturday disco nights-in which the Bee Gee’s were frequently played. If you’re from that time you’ll understand what I was referring to. Thank you for your response.
It was disco to me and my peers. True you could not dance to it in the same way ... only a few could and do a good job. It was more complicated so the BeeGees grew with this ... but still disco to me.
I’m not sure how hard core BEE GEE fans feel about the song You Win Again, but there is something about it that I love…and highly recommend/request . It’s a bit more mellow, came out in the mid 80’s, didn’t do to well in the U.S., but there’s something that always kept it relevant in my mind and capitulated my heart.
Talking to fellow Bee Gees fans, You Win Again is consistently regarded as an underrated song. I slightly disagree as it was a Number 1 in the UK, but we're on the State/Canadian side of things so we didn't get it played over here. Definitely worth a reaction video, though.
Tragedy is a masterpiece. And the Bee Gees (not just Barry) are one of the most underrated bands of all time. At the same level of the best of the best. Eternal Bee Gees!
" Tragedy... when the feelings gone and you can't go on, it's tragedy". GREAT Song! Not sure why Amber doesn't really like this one, unless it's just the beginning part before the intensity comes in. But that's really the key to making a good song, it's all about contrast.
The disco era was about 3 years out of 50 or 60 years. They have distinct, very different eras musically. I fell in love with their 60s music (so romantic), then disco, then excellent music for others and themselves. You can’t put them in a box, except the box marked Unique Excellence.
Exactly while I like their disco and remember when they were releasing those songs. I really prefer other eras more unless I am in the mood to dance like when I was in high school which makes my body hurt for days. I have never heard anyone say this so there is a great possibility I am wrong but I do not believe I have ever heard a male singer sing in falsetto for a continuous time as Barry Gibb. Unless maybe it it would be Marcelito Pomoy (not the correct spelling)
Man, I still remember listening to this 45 back in the late 70's as a little kid. Nostalgic!!! "Night Fever" is my favorite disco hit of theirs, and it was their biggest hit. :) I'm glad you reacted to that one, and FINALLY, "Tragedy"!
Haha. I was in high school. Graduated in 1977-Oneonta High. School, Oneonta, New York-which dates me A LOT. I’m 62 years old. Married for FORTY YEARS to the same guy (hubby always tells me to point out that I’m married to my FIRST husband!) Two sons and one son-in-law-no grandkids-and we think we likely won’t have any grandchildren. Oh, well….
Drawing towards the end of the disco era. The Bee Gees were shunned after this as the disco sound was old hat. They still did a lot of writing for other people as you know.
Sir Barry Compton Gibb! lol! He was Knighted by Prince Charles so just call him Sir, lol! There is a video of the Bee Gees in studio working on this song, and figuring out how to make the explosion sound, worth watching.
You beautiful people delight me with your enthusiasm. And make me laugh with your innocence. Jay, I love that you love Bee Gees but kind of shake my head a little (with a smile) at how little you know about your favorite band/singer. You gotta keep in mind, this is a big world you're diving into. The Bee Gees put their first album out in 1965. Their 22nd and final album as a band was realeased in 2001. And this whole best-falsetto-ever didn't even become a thing until their 13th album, Main Course, which marked a big change in their sound. You should go back and find the early stuff (some of them great songs with Robin in the lead) like I Started a Joke, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, Words, Lonely Days, Butterfly, Massachusetts, Run to Me. Dive deep! It's a fantastic rabbit hole to explore! Have fun. Love you!
Now you have to go watch the video called The Making Of Tragedy by The Bee GeeS. You’ll see that explosion sound is made by Barry at the microphone with his hands over it blowing into the mic! Magic!
I was 14yrs old and got to see the Tragedy Concert. It was totally unforgettable and Andy was with them. It was my favorite concert til I saw them here in Las Vegas for their One Night Only convert. I am very grateful to see them twice. And Barry did the thunder sound in a microphone lol❤
@@KD-cd2ckyou must have been lucky to have a family to be able to afford to go,I couldn't imagine it being a cheap trip, worth it though if you can afford it. I'd go if I had a chance
This is PURE Disco-era BeeGees, when they were at their peak of popularity. Total 70's. Some more must-listen 70's era BeeGees: You Should Be Dancing (Super disco bassline), Nights on Broadway, Stayin' Alive, and More Than A Woman. Some non-disco hits: I Started A Joke, I've Gotta Get A Message To You, Massachusetts, Alone, How Deep Is Your Love? The only singer I can think of who MAY be able to do a higher falsetto than Barry is Frankie Valli - check out his song with the Four Seasons "Sherry" (also you should ABSOLUTELY put the theme song for the movie "Grease" on your list - written by the BeeGees, sung solo by Frankie.) Tragedy and Nights On Broadway are EASILY my top 2 Bee Gees songs.
My late partner looked just like a young Barry Gibb... Long luscious hair, perfect beard. I felt like I had hit the jackpot. He died at 54 after 20 years together, and he will be forever young, forever handsome. ❤
Frankie Valli from the Four Seasons has a good falsetto voice. Sherry would be a good song to start with and it is from the original Four Seasons during the 60s.
😂😂 You guys are a riot! Jay, you are too much!😆 I'm with you on this one, Amber! But the truth is, the Bee Gees are special!! Go try some of their older songs, pre disco. Love you guys!!
Please try one of their best non-disco songs, the the moving, if oddly titled "New York Mining Disaster 1941." No exaggerated falsetto, just solid singing.
This was after the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack so 1979. Their music was influenced by the Delphonics, who was a falsetto band. It wasn’t until the song Nights on Broadway that Barry gave the falsetto a try. Found success with it and was encouraged to keep singing with it. Also, the making of this song in studio is great to watch!
PLEASE react to “For whom the bell tolls” by The Bee Gees. I know you love Barry but you will love Robins voice as well. Very unique. There is so much more to The Bee Gees than just Barry’s falsetto, which is phenomenal for sure, but please give Robin and FWTBT a chance. You won’t regret it and Barry leads the song, but Robin comes in with killer vocals on the chorus. 🎤❤️👏
Frankie can go in and out of falsetto where Barry cannot. Barry sounds like he struggles to get there where Frankie does not. Barry is good but Frankie is the best. Just sayin'.
Love this song!! I don't think it gets enough love on RU-vid so thank you for reacting to it. I think another underappreciated Bee Gees song is called "Love You Inside and Out." I hope you will react to that one, too. 😁
One day I was listening to an album rock station. When the DJ came back from a commercial break he said, "I'm going to paly you this record. We have a pre-release copy if it. It's not coming out for 3 or 4 weeks. We would never normally play this song because it's not our format. I'm playing it because it's going to be a HUGE record". That was the first time I heard "Tragedy". The rest is history. BTW Jay and Amber you should check out "New York City Mining Disaster". It's one of their first great songs way before the disco era stuff.
They were unfairly labled as "disco" back in the day and later shunned. Saw a documentary on them and what they said was they were huge motown fans and wanted to see if some white siblings from Australia could make an r'n'b record.
You guys seem to forget, the Bee Gees have been putting out music since 1965. So a lot of music genres came and went and They adapted and weathered the storm. To Love Somebody, I Started A Joke, Lonely Days/Lonely Nights...ENJOY
I was born in 1964… And let me tell you your love of the Bee Gees is shared by millions and millions and millions of people… Little me included! @7:19.. that..”k’SHHH!!” sound is what I waited for every time I listened to this song!! This band covers so many spectrums of music genres… That’s why they are so awesome and iconic! Cheers from 🇨🇦🤓🎉🎉🎉🎉❤️
The BeeGees are so much more than just the short lived Disco. They began as kids in the 60's on TV music shows in Australia. You need to check their early work, like Spicks and Specks eg. The falsetto didn't even start until the 70's disco era. previous to that Barry didn't know he could do it..lol... They put out so much in the 80's and into the 90's.
Love the reaction! The Bee Gees are one of the greatest bands of all time! You should check out a song they released in the early 1990's called For Whom the Bell Tolls. It is such an underrated song because it was a later release
Love the reactions guys. I find myself reminiscing and singing every word... because I'm 58 years old and know the Bee Gees so well. To see you guys appreciate past music makes me smile..So... mission accomplished Jordan and Amber 🎸🥁🎤😎💯
I was about 13 when my cousin Jimmy turned me on to them. He had as much as a 15 yrs old could. God rest his sole. He like to dance and loved their music. I'm 57 and love the Bee Gees
I’m going on 58 myself and anything by The Bee Gees is gold! It reminds me of my young years! I love hard rock and metal, but I am not a disco hater and listen to disco as well. Have you listened to “If I Cant Have You?”
You guy's FINALLY did MY FAVORITE BeeGees song! I love nearly EVERY song they do, but 'Tragedy' flat out ROCKS!! Check out 'The Making of Tragedy' on RU-vid!
Watching Jordan be transported out of his body by the Bee Gees is a delight! The Gibb Brothers had to find a way to make a dance song with being "disco", which was practically a dirty word by then. Great song!
I would love to watch you react to BeeGee's 'You Should be Dancing' clipping from the movie Saturday Night Fever. It has John Travolta doing his iconic dance on the disco floor.
Their are their own😮. Never miss with them. RIP Robin, Maurice and Andy, you now sing with the angels and we can still hear you. Your faithful follower. 🎧🎤🎶🔥🫶🙏🙏🙏
You guys need to hear their songs they did in the 60’s. Like Massachusetts, I Started a Joke, Gotta Get a Message to You, etc. Barry Gibb’s voice was different before the 70’s. His falsetto voice was a later development that he would use during the 70’s and onward
This is one that grows on you. Soon you'll be singing it to yourself. Also, that bang (that sounds a little like thunder) is supposed to represent gun fire and fits into the "tragedy" thing.
The "explosion" at 7:18, is actually Barry with his hands around his mouth and the mic, making explosion noises. This is a short video of the recording of the song, and, at 2:41 is where they begin to work on the explosion. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-42Mk6OJ5ZwQ.html
MY GUYS!! ❤❤❤ Fun Fact: Barry made the explosion noise into the microphone himself! Jay, Barry's full name is: Sir Barry Alan Crompton Gibb Check out some of their later stuff, too, like "I Couldn't Love You More", "Alone", "Kiss of Life" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Zf-c4O_RwyA.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DFMQTKnTMAA.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MWwrHhElI60.html
This is by far the best bee gees song. I’m gonna get a lot of disagreement with that but it’s fact If you haven’t reacted to “nights on broadway” that’s a banger too
If you really want to go for a different sound to the Bee Gees, you should give their 1987 UK Number 1 single 'You Win Again'. Captured a different feel to their Saturday Night Fever days, and showed a more mature sound to them.
Thank you so much for this reaction video. Tragedy is one of my top favorite Bee Gee songs. And Barry's falsetto is perfect. I believe he is considered one of, if not the top falsetto voices. He can do it out at any time. All three of these guys are uber-talented. No one can touch them. I love the Bee Gees, you have gone down one of the greatest Rabbit holes in the music world. Thank you again for this reaction! (Love you Barry 💓)
As much as Jordan loves The Bee Gees disco sound, I can’t believe you haven’t reacted to “ Staying Alive “ yet. This is pure Bee Gees disco.. Jordan buddy, you need to listen to it!!!
