Hyperbolic. I didn’t like the way the R8 590 cast 2” streamers, but maybe it was the line. I’m used to a 590 Z-Axis, but that rod was stolen a few weeks ago. The Z-Axis threw Clouser minnows with ease. Do you think the 690 R8 would do better with streamers? TIA 👍👍👍
Not Hyperbolic, just the truth the best we can tell it. However, I also fish the 590 Z-Axis and still love it as well. While the R8 Core may not "feel" as fast as the Z-Axis, we do find it has a whole lot of power to be able to throw decent-sized streamers such as clousers (for a 5 weight). It could be the line you are using. Perhaps the SA MPX Taper, or the Rio GRANDE taper may better serve you. If that ain't it for you after casting, maybe the 690 is going to be a better bet for streamers in your situation. I hope that helps! -Andy
Nice review! Can you say something about the 410? That for me is the best allrounder weight/length combination as I fish both small streamers and dry flies and also do a lot of high sticking...
The R8 Core 4100 is not as much an all-around rod for us as it might be for you as the extra length gives it a lot more flex and feel. Almost a softer rod than the 9 footers...but it makes for a seriously incredible roll casting and mending rod for fishing a wide variety of nymph rigs or high sticking. It's a fantastic nymphing rod with a wide variety of nymph rigs or even high sticking but would do well with smaller streamers. It would work pretty good for dry fly fishing if you need it but may feel a little long for the purpose. However, with tiny dries the R8 Core will protect light tippet very well.
@@Duranglers I'm using the Vision nymphomaniac, cheap but very good value (stripped and rebuilt the handle/reel seat) in this exact configuration. I fish in Scandinavian mountains where wind can be a factor and you always have to be prepare to switch things up, but can't carry too many rods on multi day hikes (as I also carry video equipmentl). Thinking R8 410 would be a fantastic upgrade just because it is nice to have the best 😁 And yes, I do a lot of skagit style casting with the streamers and mending is a key for this kind of fishing across relatively large rivers. Here's one example of that kind of fishing ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yFkxYxgC42E.html
