The 1977 effects were amazing, but what you're seeing in this version has had a lot of the original model and practical effects replaced with cgi. (And Geedo never shot.)

Not a Lot. There isnt actually anything replaced at all. There's just some things added.

@@chain_of_nothing There is indeed replaced effects. The Sandcrawler climbing the dune, some cantina aliens, X-wing shots, the Death star explosion, the landspeeder flying into Mos Eisley etc.

@@chain_of_nothing There are a whole a lot of shots replaced or effects tweaked or added to existing scenes. Some major, some minor, several not listed. The extended scene of the Dewbacks and stormtroopers at the escape pod site, the Dewback outside the cantina, the exterior of Obi Wan’s hut, the matte painting of MOs Eisley seen from above, the alien with a beret in the cantina replaces what was essentially a werewolf, Greedo shoots, flying droids accompanying stormtroopers door to door, terrible CGI Jabba, the Millennium falcon escaping Mos Eisley. Praxis effects added to the explosions of Alderaan and the Death Star, the Rebel fleet rising from Yavin, the wide panning shot of the fleet approaching the Death Star, several battle scenes over the Death Star, even the Yavin temple exterior itself. Non-effects related but the brief reunion of Luke and Biggs was not in the original version either.

Ahhh I'm so happy you're reacting to the star wars movies! It's impossible not to just love R2-D2 immediately. As you said, the way they get R2's emotions across without a face or speech is great! Can't wait for the rest of this series ☺️

Yes, I saw it in the cinema in 1977. They did a refresh adding some unneeded CGI in the 1990s (the “Special Edition”, which is the only way it’s available now, except for bootleg reconstructions like the “Despecialized Edition”, which is well worth watching if you can find it), but honestly almost none of the CGI is a noticeable improvement over the original effects.

The rotoscoping on the lightsabers looks markedly better in my opinion, but basically every other addition just cheapens the movies…and stuff like that “Han shot first” debate bug me. I grew up with the very last VHS version that wasn’t updated, and lemme tell you, there weren’t even two shots. Han blasted Greedo away before he could even react. Or the “no, I am your father” scene. In the original version he says “no Luke, I am your father.” The discrepancies come from the edited versions later on.

1977 - I was 14, and at the time not a big sci-fi fan. My younger brother carried on and on, and insisted our family go see this movie, I was dreading it. Within the first few minutes I was blown away. SW consumed me. And Seb, like you and Chris Evans, Mark Hamill became my crush. They say you never forget what you were doing when a life event happens, and after all these years I clearly remember the inside of the theater and where I was sitting. May the force be with you!

I saw it in a drive thru with my twin brother, and my older brother took us to see it. It was totally incredible, just to see all of those special effects, granted they weren't like they are in the upgraded version you just watched, but for the time, they were spectacular! I saw this back in 1978 and it instantly made me want to make my own films. Still working on that, but it's happening. I always wince a little when I hear people refer to a film being impressive "for way back then" or something similar, as if great-looking films were a new phenomenon. I watched an old Hitchcock thriller the other night which featured a shot of a passenger plane in flight...the camera moved in closer and closer until it went right up to and through a window, where the characters were sitting inside. This film was made in 1940, and the shot looked flawless. Great films have existed for a long time.

I was only 5 when this movie came out so I never got to see the original release in the theater, but I did see the 1981 re-release which was the first time "A New Hope" was added to the title. My dad took me to see The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi when they first came out. I was six years old when this movie first came out. My father took me to see it and it instantly became my all time favorite movie, even to this day. My favorite scene is when Luke is at Obi-Wan's home and Obi-Wan is telling him about Luke's father, and the history of the Jedi, etc. Then of course there's the attack on the Death Star. There are so many quotable lines in this movie even if only because they're kinda cheesy. But it's surprising how many lines from just the attack on the Death Star you can fit into every day life. You should see Rogue One, which is also excellent and leads immediately into this movie.

The pure vision that George Lucas had is insane. Not only did he have such insane creativity with characters and casting, but the special FX company he founded (Industrial Light and Magic, ILM for short) paved the way for practically every effect we hold dear. In my opinion, this film was the pioneer that skyrocketed cinema to where it is today. I think it was also one of the first "fandom" films.

Practical effects, actual Pyro-Technics and models will always look more real than CGI because it actually *is* real. Those explosions are actual explosions (well, most of them, this was the reanimated version some CGI was added in afterwards), the ships look three dimensional because they are actually three dimensional. Its just alot more work and harder to do so movies these days dont give a shit, its al about bank and not about the art anymore. Even so, very few films (if any) does it on Star Wars level and in the friggin 70s, man.¨ The OT is considered one of the greatest film series ever made and I *still* feel like it sometimes doesn't get enough credit.

There were a few prior to Star Wars. the original Planet of the Apes, 2001: A Space Odyssey... maybe a few others(depending on how you define it). However, Star Wars DID completely change how movies were made/marketed. Aside from wanting movie related products(which weren't really a "hot" thing at the time) like toys, posters, t-shirts, etc.... he really wanted control of the sequels(assuming there would be any). Planet of the Apes shared a toy company producer with Star Trek, and the Super Hero comic book characters(both Marvel and DC). Mego, in case you didn't know... that made 8" fully posable "dolls/action figures" and playsets. Anyway, Lucas redefined HOW movies were made, by creating his own FX company(Industrial Light and Magic), Sound Studio(The THX process via Skywalker Sound), etc. And yes, I'm sure you're aware of these facts... just putting it out there for anyone who doesn't know.

I was ten years old and had no idea about this movie at all. My Dad took my older brother and I into the city to see it and although we’d done that many times it was the first time we’d ever queued to get into a cinema. There were lines down the street to get in. I couldn’t comprehend why. As soon as that first space battle started and the Star Destroyer rumbled over our heads in a seemingly endless mass of metal with laser blasts flashing back and forth I was completely and utterly hooked. No space battles or laser fights from any movie or tv show had ever been as action packed. It was a complete revolution and audiences just lapped it up.

But none kept going in the theaters for 1 year. So this was truly monumental in it's affect on the populace. Movies nowadays don't even last 1 month in a theater.

After all the tinkering with this scene, I wonder if Lucas would have responded better to "Greedo NEVER shot!" instead of "Han shot first."

The thing I love about watching first-time reactions to the original trilogy is the way y'all come up with questions that never occurred to me in 30 years of fandom. "Can R2-D2 fight?" Love it.

Yes I saw it when it came out. I was a young kid, but I knew it was introducing a whole new level of sci-fi films. R2 is a maintenance droid. His has abilities to analysis and repair various mechanical and electronic devices. So when they load him onto a fighter, it is to keep it from breaking down.

Obi-Wan knew he had no hope of getting past Vader and the troopers, so he gave in let his death inspire Luke. Plus, he merged with the Force, and can guide him. In life, he was over-powered and out-gunned, there was no way for him to escape

When you realise that George Lucas and his team formed a new company to create the effects he wanted as he wasn't happy with what was around. That company was Industrial Light and Magic, later just ILM.

I was 8 and with my family. After my dad said we were going to a movie about cowboys and Indians in outerspace (that was his only reference point) my brother and I wanted to see Empire of the Ants. Then we saw SW and my parents cheated and let us stay for the next show. It was a big theater and all the big sound and picture blew us away.

This is my favorite Star Wars movie. Gov Tarkin is so ruthless. I wish they hadn't killed him off. He and Vader made a great team. I guess they needed to move the story forward by having Vader assume full control of the troops. RIP Peter Cushing and David Prowse.

A Padawan approaches with some knowledge of The Force. Lets us see if he is worth Obi-Wan's time and Anakin's Light Saber. 20:00 Jedi consider Death to be a quaint concept. Comparing the 1977 original vs. the "George Lucre"/added DFX version: Han shot first! Jabba the Hutt didn't appear until "Return of the Jedi" and the final injustice...Chewbacca didn't get a medal!

Here's something with talking about. Recently, George Lucas revealed something important about the subtext of this movie in an interview with James Cameron. We knew before that the Ewoks in episode 6 were a metaphor for Vietnam in the Vietnam war. What Lucas recently revealed is that the rebel alliance is also a metaphor for the Vietnamese. This means that all along, the Empire was a metaphor for America's behavior during the Cold War. He was basically comparing his own country to Nazis. The original Star Wars was far more "woke" than modern Star Wars (which is admittedly better about inclusion). During the insane popularity of Star Wars in the late 70s, African-Americans rightly pointed out that most science fiction movies lacked any black people, implying that they had no future and were wiped out (this critique was about science fiction in general, most of which is set in the future; Star Wars is set in the past). Lucas took this criticism to heart and added a black character to the main cast in the very next movie. One thing to keep in mind: this movie was made on what was considered a medium-sized budget for the late 70s, which means it was made on a tiny budget compared to today's blockbusters. You have to remember that blockbusters weren't a thing back then. This movie and Jaws created the blockbuster. Because Lucas' vision greatly exceeded his budget, he was forced to create his own special effects company (Industrial Light and Magic) and staff it with incredibly young, inexperienced people who are willing to use emerging technologies to invent entirely new ways of making special effects. It is impossible to overstate how groundbreaking the special effects were for the time. It blew everyone's minds. The number 1138 appears in a lot of Lucas movies. It is a reference to his first film THX 1138, which was based on a film he made as a student. Did you notice how princess Leia took charge of her own rescue? It is impossible to overstate how shocking that was in 1977. Women in action movies just didn't do things like that back then. The role of women was to be trophies for the hero and villain to fight over. You might want to react to Hidden Fortress by Kurosawa. This movie was basically a science fiction version of that.

George Lucas had already set the tone for some of the interior visuals with his movie THX-1138. The death star control room and consoles etc. you can see the design elements in THX-1138.

funfact: tatooine is a GLASSED PLANET! THOUSANDS OF YEARS before star wars a hostile civilization laid siege to what used to be a lush Gaia planet richer with more life and resources than earth, now all that's left is the scattered native survivors, the tusken raiders and jawas, because their one lush paradise planet homeworld is now covered in the dust of all the organic life that died when the planet was glassed with enough energy to boil nearly every drop of water from the surface

Y'all should watch the making of Star Wars... With only a few months left before the due date, and about 80% of the budget already spent on Special Effects development, not a single frame of film was shot yet... lol... This movie almost never happened. The end result broke the film industry on how to make movies...

The part that's hard to explain was that there was no life before Star Wars. If you were blown away 44 years later watching it on a small screen, imagine the original experience in the theater. Every few years the studio seems to do a limited big-screen release, run, dont walk to one of these.

Yes! What spectacular and amazing about it was the bigger screen and improved surround sound. Ok, technically there is no sound in space. I say don't let the facts get in the way of a good story. I can't express the awwww factor.

The storm troopers are clones, so they're all the same height. Seb, have you seen Rogue One? It's the story of how the plans were stolen. It also explains why there was a weak spot on the Death Star. I was in the Air Force when the original came out, and a group of us were going to rush off after work to see the movie on the first day. And the base commander decided he wanted a parade where we all dressed in uniform and stood in formation for hours in the Alabama heat. Once we were dismissed, we had to hurry and change out of our uniforms and rush to the theater to see it. Check out "Princess Leia's Stolen Death Star Plans". Some guys set the entire movie to Beatles songs (with lyrics appropriate for Star Wars). It's amazing. It takes several videos to go through the whole movie, but my favorite is "Luke is in the Desert and Whining".

Just since you keep talking about the special effects, you're watching one of the newer remasters. It's a little ridiculous how many "updates" they've given the original trilogy. I'd be interested if you ever did a rewatch of this trilogy if you'd try and find/watch the theatrical release or as close to it as you can. See what sticks out as different on only your second viewing.

Kenobi could only afford 2k so instead of paying 10k all in advance he would give 2k now and the rebels would give 15k once they get there considering the importance of the delivery.
