I noticed a more extended frequency range on the bass when using the Neumann. Same with the acoustic, it had more 'body'. Didn't really notice a difference in the vocal segment.

To me, the Neumann makes everything more clear and a little bit louder. Very fun to listen to and could bring more quality sound to mixes.👍👍😀

I usually can’t tell the difference at all when listening to these preamp shootouts and tests but This is the first preamp that I actually can hear the difference. It just sounds so full bodied my God almost like a three dimensional quality to the sound. I feel like there are aspects and quality of the sounds that you can hear that you can’t when listening through other preamps and I can only imagine what the raw files sound like

Its Neuman so OBVIOUSLY its going to be expensive. I don't understand people making a big deal about that. They make Microphones that are even more expensive than this Preamp. Yeah, it sounds REALLY good. Really good. Doesn't sound hyped anywhere. Some extended low end and high end compared to the Apollo. Which has really nice sound pres. Both are great. Might be worth it depending on your use case. If you're a hobbyist, or have a podcast or something its probably not for you. If you're working professionally doing voiceover work or where signal quality and clarity are of paramount value, it might be worth checking out.

It's interesting how you could get Neumann v472-2 preamps for 400 dollars easily, which are at least as nice sounding as this, if not nicer. They certainly has a more pleasant top end. But those is still somewhat undiscovered, which is weird really. The TAB V72 goes for many thousands, while the equally great Neumann version goes for just a few hundred dollars. Although I do get it. Sometimes you don't have the luxury of troubleshooting old equipment, or sending them off to some tech in Munchen because he's one of the few people in the world who really knows the equipment and has spares etc, which is why I like that they released this, even though you can get the same or better for just a fraction of the price, if you are ready to deal with age and entropy.

Thanks for the comparison, I couldn’t really tell the difference till you play the acoustic guitar on youtube. Then I downloaded the tracks and listened carefully to notice there is more roar on the low end and more clarity on the high end of frequency, although the difference is extremely subtle, I do like the sound from Neumann better. It gives out more raw energy.

I listened to the RU-vid - tones with headphones, and even over this compressed source I think that "rich sounding" is the right expresion. There is lots of body, especially in the low end. The bass tone was great. I like the tone a lot.

Usually most preamps sound alike but this one is different, really like it. No harsh subliance. Wish it had haufe tranformers

More precision for Neumann (listen on PSI A25m) (bass more precise, and the "air" is very well articulated). Thanks for this good test.

Apollo sounds distorted on the DI compared to the Neumann also high end is more accurate and present on the Neumann. Voice sounded again smoother on the Neumann, listen for the fricatives/ sibilance. Very smooth on the Neumann, crispy on the Apollo. This mic pre sounds like their high end mics do. Very smooth top end no matter the source. Very smooth low end / low distortion

Would be very curious to hear a comparison with room mics, especially for classical strings, or even a drum setup or something. not terrrrrrrribly noticeable differences between the comparisons here but I think the differences may come out more in situations where you demand a bit more from the preamp. I'm guessing this preamp is intended to go head to head with the really high level classical stuff like Millennia and Grace design.

Thanks for the review. This would probably kill on classical music or other recordings that need that extra clinical touch, but for most modern music or recordings that can benefit from a little color/character, there are better options for less money. For what Neumann probably had in mind when designing this, I'm sure it's perfect.

I was looking into this, seems pretty straight forward. Just picked up 184MT and love it Wish the price point was a little better but running a business, employees etc is costly these days. Cool they are re- releasing outboard gear. Wonder what's coming next from them. Great video, i love this type of content. Cheers from Michigan

So, i carefully listened to the AB Files on good speakers. The Neumann sounds richer. But noch $3000 richer. Funny thing is: The Lauten LS-208 cuts more through a mix. It almost seems to me like there is a specific mid-notch on the Neumann, which, of course, adds character but is not really suitable for every instrument. I liked it on the bass. But not so much on the vocals and accoustic-guitars.

It’s very difficult to detect the nuances of a high-end preamp unless the entire signal chain is equal to or greater in sonic purity. The microphones, the cables the DA/AD converters, and the headphone amplifiers, headphones or monitors. If just one of those aforementioned items in the signal chain minimizes the original mic’d signal you really can’t tell exactly how accurately the preamp really is performing. That said it’s still a great piece and worth the $.

well said. Thats what i though. High definition. sounding/fuller/warmer lows something like that. 10hz-100khz much headroom and reminds me of Sony analog mixers. They also spec out around that number.

When are we going to get a review on those Neumann 310's in the background? Great content and review. Also I see you used to have the 120's and 310's together, why now just the 310's?

I'm going to download the DI files for comparison. I'm listening on my ( home ) studio setup and the difference is minimal to my ear. All this did we reaffirm that i need to upgrade from my focusrite to a Apollo interface lol!

Absolutely more lows and low mids with the Neumann. I have dozens of high quality preamps. Not sure why Neumann jumped back in unless it is made in China and they can profit heavily off of it.

How do you hook up the preamp to the interface without putting the preamp into another preamp? Like how do you bypass the audio interface?

That depends on the interface. On the Apollo you simply don’t use the XLR inputs and use the 1/4 TRS Inputs

Clearly demonstrating that fancy preamps have very little effect on overall sound. There's a difference, mostly in the low end. Up to you whether that difference is worth $3K.

Listening to this with my Neumann NDH 20 headphones on my UA Apollo Interface I didn't hear any difference, to be honest (in the vocals (my main domain)). I heard a bit more or cleaner low frequencies in the guitar and a bit cleaner highs, veeeery subtle, though. Nothing that would justify buying this baby for me at least - never! :)

No Transformer, no A/D conversation? This thing is totally overpriced, yea it looks good and sounds ok but there is no bang for the buck at 3000k …(naw..I’ll pass)😂 I can get a more feature rich mic pre (like the 4 channel Manley Force) or UAD’s 6176 for less money or similar price point. Neumann charging $3000 for this thing is ridiculous and a prime example of brand Hubris. (Neve also has this problem).
