I bumped into So Hyang 3 years ago and it changed my entire outlook on music and opened a whole new group of artists that just blow me away. It broke me out of American pop. So Hyang is my favorite singer ever and I'm 71 and heard a lot of singers. You will enjoy your new musical journey. By the way she's the best singer ever.

Arirang Alone is originally a folk song that Sohyang rearranged to inject drama and dynamism into a relatively simple melody. She also introduced the western element (like the violin) into this very traditional music from the Orient. The song carries fair amount of historical and populist sentiment that represents Korean people's desire for a peaceful reunification for a country that suffered through wars and occupation in history. Sohyang stated before that she considered each performance is one that takes place her Lord, whether the occasion is secular or religious, and each one requires her full commitment. I am not a religious person but I must say I truly admire her faith.

You are right bearded wonder. I think what separates her for other performers (who are very talented vocally), is her joy and passion for singing and her motivation. Her performance ability on stage has few equals in terms of her emotional connection with the audience. I can watch her over and over and still feel mesmerized and amazed.

Her singing is all about the joy of love and eternal hope despite all the hardships and pains of everyday living. Just look at the facial expressions on her face when she performs. She's not just putting on a show here. You can feel the emotions pouring out of her are genuine and from her heart.

The audience sings along in the middle section because they know the song - it is a very old traditional Folk song taken from earlier times. She arranged it to enhance it on the front of the performance. Her dress and some of the other trappings were also traditional Korean.

In Asia, they write the surname first and then the given name. :) As someone said it's a song about the history of Korea, the dramatic part was symbolic for the wars and it ends with a longing for the North and South to be united. Well, this time the busy beard was right! The ‘Arirang’ is very old Korean anthem like folks song which is probably few hundred years old. The word ‘Arirang’ does represent so many things for Korean people, but it’s always closely represented with all the hardships that ordinary Korean people have been facing & enduring together in their difficult times. The word ‘Arirang’ has been connected with word ‘Hill’, because going up to the hill is a hard work which represents difficulties but once you are up, it means next will be down the hill which is easy way. So Korea people sang this song together while working hard to overcome those difficulties while looking forward to their better future which is easy ways to down the hill. Well, Arirang has lots of meanings but basically, it's the pain which Korean has suffered over 5000 years. This is a traditional folksong. This version of Arirang is focused on the united Korea between North and South in the future. simply we believe we will be united.

People are confusing you about the pronunciation. Yes her given name is So Hyang, not So. Kind of like Mary Lou, you wouldn't call her Mary, 'cos that's not her name. Usually it's stylized as one word, Sohyang. Last name Kim, which in Korean and Japanese and other Asian languages, is written first. Kim So Hyang or Kim So-Hyang. So Hyang's 2 syllables, and it sounds a lot like So Young, although there are some subtle differences, but for English speakers, So Young is pretty close. The 'Y' sound in "Young" actually has an 'H' sound ahead of it, or sort of mixed with it, so it's almost like Heeyoung, but you say the 'hee' part so quickly that it just sounds like "HYoung". And it's not really "Young", it's more like "Yahng", but like I said, So Young is close enough and the easiest way to pronounce it without butchering her name horribly like a lot of reactors do when they try too hard. One in particular always pronounces her name like So High Yang and it drives me nuts, lol,,,

I love so Hyang . But I have a request that you react to her closest and best friend, “Park Ki Young”, I like Park Ki Young because they have about the same vocal range but Park Ki Young is a tad more versatile and can belt them with equal emotional impact and power in rock, pop, soul, jazz flamenco, and classical ( opera). “ So hyang” receives a lot more reactors and reactions than Park Ki Young” because of her ability to sing some American songs in English which she performs with emotional impact. But please don’t judge a vocalist by the number of requests you receive-altho your fans are usually right. But I’m a professional singer and my singing friends unanimously agree that both So Hyang and Park Ki Young are not only world class vocalists but equal in talent. What I’m trying to say is I believe Park Ki Young deserves far more reactions and I promise you and your subscribers who love So Hyang ( and I am among them) that you won’t be disappointed listening to a Park Ki Young song. They are both about the same age ( early 40s but look amazing for their age!) and the closest and best of friends. Yes Sohyang, Dimash and Morrisette are great. But there are also fantastic young singers emerging. Faouzia is a jaw dropping astonishing singer, conveys emotion, and a great great songwriter. Don't call her So. It should be pronounced as Young with a soft "H". Arirang Alone is an iconic song for reactors as it has the legendary Bb5 in the middle of the song. All her songs in Immortal Song 2, I Am A Singer 2 and King of Mask Singers are as impactful if not so. Recently, she performed many songs doing a busking program with many popular and awesome singers from Korea - Begin Again Korea. Please note this down.
