An important consideration, this song is deliberately meant to be very jarring at points. Krigsgaldr means "war magic" and is part of a larger story told in other songs from Lifa. The overall story is, a village is thrust into a war they didn't want or start, but now must participate in. This performance is an actual ritual designed deliberately to induce a trance state, then break you out it just as the village was peaceful, then war-torn. This song describes the point of no return. Maria's lyrics reflect the feelings of the women who fear what is coming, while the throat singing expresses the growing aggression among the warriors as their village is drawn into war.

I was "raised my Christian nationalists and always felt disconnected and sadness . The sadness was that complete damation of Pagaism. I made my 1st yule alter at around age 10yrs old. Why because I felt it was within my soul. Just look to the sky and phase of moon and it's there withing your self. As for my Christian nationalists family , I was ostracized and family members begged my to ask Jesus for forgiveness. . I'm a German native and have the exact same feelings. It's just heart breaking how much all of us have in common at the core, yet some few power hungry degenerates manage to divide us so very effectively. We all just want to live in peace and love the people around us. No matter where, no matter what we look like. Heilung somehow manages to convey this incredibly well, to the point where even South Indian tribal people that haven't had any connection to African/European/American cultures inherently understand and agree. Heilung (meaning healing) really do what they named themselves on a truly global scale. Their songs may not appear as such on the surface, but really are pure love for humankind as a whole.

That's awesome. Yea I love Heilung, I saw a video of one of their live performances somewhere in the US and they brought up some of the native peoples in their traditional regalia. Seeing them all celebrate and dance together was powerful, 2 completely different cultures from opposite sides of the world but still very much what it means to be human. Quite literally brought me to tears lol and wish I could've experienced it live.

Yeah, these guys came out of nowhere a few years back and dominated Castlefest as a virtually unknown act. That alone is insanely impressive. Steal the show at a metal festival without actually playing Metal, lol. Granted Metalheads have eclectic tastes, but that's still virtually unheard of. They got some backlash for using a human femur as a drum stick in their early shows. But it's a very unique style, very theatrical.

I've been part of two of their rituals (live performance in other word) and it is just mezmerizing and uplifting for your soul. You just stand there taking it all in, either watching them or with your eyes closed and letting their sounds and singing taking you away. The second time I was going to see them I had a bad day, had not slept well, had eaten some not so good food and wasn't feeling all that great either (mentally) and was actually thinking of just not going. But I so fondly remembered the first time I saw them so I forced myself to go, and I was glad I did it. After the ritual I felt "lifted", I felt better (even though my stomach wasn't agreeing with that) and re-energized that the trip I took to didn't feel like wasted time and money.

Was hopping into the comments to recommend exactly this. It's absolutely stunning. I struggle with a lot of mental issues, PTSD, depression, etc, and occasionally will just take a day tripping on mushrooms to try to work through some things. I was familiar with heilung, and thought mixing that in would be an interesting addition to the trip. I ended up sitting in my room with Anoana on a loop for about 6 hours. It changed my life. I don't like to exaggerate, but I'm genuinely, fundamentally in a better place since that experience, and the song played a huge part in it.

The lady and the throat singer with dreadlocks are a couple. The guy with the antlers (a tattoo artist) asked if he could record some of his poems in exchange of a free tattoo for the first guy. They ended up making this band. This was also their first live performance, so everyone else (including the falsetto guy) are guest artists. Some are now regulars, but some did not permanently join, such as the singer with the falsetto. Also, the tattoo was never executed because after this performance they were like “wow this worked?” and they now tour the world. They now have a few female back-up singers, one of which is the sister of the falsetto guy and has an amazing voice (just like basically everyone involved with them)

In Heilung's music Kai routinely sings cleanly but also uses a form of Kargyraa with varying degrees of distortion, and then does straight up black metal screams. Kargyraa transitions into screams VERY easily and thus you usually get a blend of both going on within a song, just gotta drop primary cord phonation, increase compression and play with mouth shaping.

There is no "Celtic" throat singing. Kai occasionally uses a Mongolian type of throat singing (undertone singing) called "kargyraa". The gutteral vocals in this song are more akin to metal vocals. All false folds, no vocal folds. Kai inspired me to learn Kargyraa myself and I'm familiar with metal vocalisations, so I notice the differences pretty clearly. Another band that uses Kargyraa in a very beautiful and nordic inspired way is Nytt Land. I highly recommend.

Enjoyed your reaction. Heilung (healing in German) is an experimental folk music band who draws inspiration for their music from texts, runic inscriptions and other artifacts from Iron Age Northern Germanic people and the Viking Age. They call their music amplified history and their goal is to connect modern society with the beginnings of humanity through music. They call their shows Rituals and having been to one it is a very apt description. It is a very spiritual experience. The show starts with all the performers coming on stage and a blessing given by one of the male singers (Kai I believe) acting as Shaman. They then recite their collective prayer. Remember, that we all are brothers All people, beasts, trees and stone and wind We all descend from the one great being That was always there Before people lived and named it Before the first seed sprouted" The rest of the ritual takes you on an amazing journey of healing and reconnection with something ancient and eternal. Highly recommend the song Anoana for it's amazing story and Maria's fantastic vocals. I think you would especially enjoy where she uses the traditional Swedish Kulning technique in the song. Very powerful and soul stirring.

This is so primal with a sad undertone. This is truly amazing. The primal nature of telling a story of a struggle is so compelling. This is my first time hearing them, and I am an instant fan. My heritage is viking, Norse, norwegian scandinavia, and this fascnates me and makes me feel connected to them. Thank you for doing this review!❤❤❤

For more by this group, I'd recommend 'In Maijan' and 'Alfadhirhaitl' from the same concert. The first song has more vocal range from Maria; the second is more like a village getting ready for battle and asking for Odin's blessing. Another band that I discovered much more recently is Otyken. Sounding a bit like a mix of Heilung and The Hu, the members are from a native tribe in Siberia.

The languages used are english and runic ¿Old danis? The texts of the song have been extracted from the Eggia stone. Eggja's stone (also known as Eggum's or Eggjum's stone) This is a large flat stone with runic inscriptions that covered a tomb dating from the period between 650 and 700 and that was discovered while plowing a field in 1917 at Eggja farm in Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. When it was found, the inscription was on the underside of the slab covering a man's grave, so that it could not be read from the outside (like the Kylver stone). The stone is currently in the Bergen museum. It has about 200 runes, making it the longest inscription engraved with letters of the ancient futhark alphabet, although some runes have a transitional form to the young futhark. The lyrics say the following: The home fades. Vil launched a deadly horde upon them. The oars and mast were destroyed. Who brought? Who brought the horde to this distant land? The fishes of the streams of Firnoy. They swim adrift. From the land of bright meadows. Who brought? Who brought the horde to this distant land? A hug.

I am so happy that you delved into this incredible group. Watching you experience this for the first time has been such a pleasure. It is so hard to recommend a first song for someone to listen to because it is just so different, and there are so many songs that are also so different from each other. This song definitely has a massive impact on the first-time listener, so it is a good choice. My suggestion for a song, that shows off Maria's massive vocal talent, I suggest the song "In Maidjan." From this same performance at Castlefest. Thanks for this reaction. It will probably be the reaction highlight of my week.

Krigs galdr = War chant. I saw Heilung (healing in English) live in Toronto a year and a half ago and, what I heard about their "concert" proved to be true - it's more of a ceremony than a concert. It stirred my Nordic roots in a way that still hasn't left me.

you're correct about the throat singing! the drone-like lower placed sound is standard kargyraa, in which the false folds and true folds vibrate simultaneously, with the false folds synchronized into a sub-octave relationship with the true folds-this is what gives it it's characteristically buzzy sound. it's considered a foundational technique in vocal distortion, and forms the basis for a lot of rock and metal distortion. the higher placed sounds are based on a related technique known in metal as "fry screaming," which is achieved at the true fold level by hovering the voice between registers, leveraging the subsequent oscillation around the vocal break to produce distortion. both are totally healthy forms of phonation when performed correctly; i practice them everyday and can easily switch between distorted sounds and clean resonant singing with no loss of range or control

I recently (in the last week) found this group and now there is nothing on this Earth I want to do more than see a ritual for myself live. And I'm a metal head, this isn't my forte at all but there is just something so special about Heilung that I honestly can't even describe - like they're a key to the lock that is my soul. Unfortunately they just have a few tour dates in the US this year and nothing remotely close to me.... so 2025 I really hope or hell maybe something will come up. I have to see them.

To anyone that doesn’t know. They actually made there instruments the way the Vikings did ( from bones and hides) and if this music scares you have no Viking blood in you and that’s ok. If it gives you goosebumps and awakens you have Viking blood or descendants. Please don’t take any of this badly. I’ve heard this from descendants from Vikings. This music is ancient and powerful. Vikings like native Americans, Indians or an ancient culture were so in-tuned with nature and what music was supposed to be and sound like.

One of Maria Franz's other bands is called "Euzen" and I would SO VERY MUCH like to recommend the "EUZEN | Metamorph LIVE @ Castlefest 2015" video. It's a very different style from Heilung, but her singing, especially in the second half of the song, is just... primordial are the most fitting words I can find for it. When I first heard Euzen and Heilung I showed it to my mother and told her that if I was going through a deep dark forest in the middle of the night and heard her singing voice, I would just have to follow it. Like a siren's song. It really is captivating. I don't think I can recommend you (and other viewers of course) anything more than that performance. Cheers!

I'd call it harsh vocals, which is a whole rabbit hole. I saw a video on another channel of a singer making harsh vocals with a scope down his throat, and it seems that the tissues constrict and twist above the true vocal folds with a lot of saliva percolating to produce this growling sound.
