A word of caution using dust collection on the belt grinder. Let the water bucket catch the sparks first then place dust collection further back on the belt. I have found smoldering chips inside my vacuum after grinding. It could have been bad had I not checked. Nice upgrade.
Wow. This is the first time I've seen all the features of that thing. I already am pretty jealous of anyone with a 2x72, but man that thing is crazy. I've got a 1x30, 2x42, and a 4x36 but I still don't have the functionality between all three that someone can get out of a 2x72.
I'm in the precess of buying a 2x72". After rearresting researching Bader, Northridge, Reeder, Black Fox Knifeworks and Ameribrade, I finally decided on the Black Fox One (BFO). I liked the Northridge and Ameribrade, but I didn't like the horizontal mount for them. IMO the horizontal attachment is an after thought to compete with the BFO. The Grinder was designed with horizontal usage in mind and pivots close to the center of gravity. I also liked that the VFD is integral to the babe base and stays stationary unlike all the other brands. Also Thaddeus is very responsive to emails and answered all my questions. And I pestered the heck out of him. It's still a couple weeks until I get it, but I'll post a video when I do
I love the content you are always providing sr I am starting to make knives and I was able to buy my NRT grinder and I love it and the attention George give is owesome. Congratulations sr and keep up the good work
America! Heck yeah! I loved that! 👍🏻😎 That’s a great looking set up there, James! You have to be happy with that. It’s on my plan to pick up a 2x72 once I have more room, so this video is really useful. Hope you’re doing okay over there, with the snowstorm and power cuts ‘n all. 🤜🏻💥🤛🏻
I love it when you upload dude gets my weekend off to a good start! Sadly u only upload once every 2 weeks :( but that’s ok I just watch your old videos!
Sweet grinder! My Brodbeck should arrive today. I considered this one but the rest on the Brodbeck sold me. Looks like you built a nice one yourself. 👍
Excellent video, thanks for putting this together. I am in a grinder search as we speak and have narrowed it down to these 4 --- KMG-TX, Burr King 960 series, Uber Grinder & finally the Ameribrade Mastery Package. I've done a great job of researching myself into a state of confusion, so I am wide open for opinions from you or your viewers. Thanks again!
Lots of good machines out there today... if you had a chance to see them in person that would be ideal. I can say I love my NorthRidge machine. It's professional grade for sure.
Just a weekend knife making hobbyist, early days, maybe do 2 knifes a year, more focused on sanding handle scales. Looking at the new Grizzly 2x42" - it's cheap, small, but could work for my needs and good warranty if problems. Kind of hesitating due to figuring out safe dust collection for g10, carbon fiber, etc.
I too am in the market for a new 2x72. Northridge and Diktator grinders are the 2 that I have narrowed my search down to. I am leaning towards Diktator only because of the price point being slightly less than Northridge and I’m not making any money at this it’s a hobby until I learn a whole lot more about this great craft.
Grats on the purchase, that looks like an amazing piece of gear. You buy something like that and you know it will last, looking forward to the review down the track.
Just prior to Brian releasing his Revolution grinder I was thinking about making a Sayber OSG. Mainly due to it being mostly bolted together; I don't have a welder or any of the skills that go with owning one. :) But... his grinder is pretty badass and his message convinced me to support him and buy his plans. That was quite a while ago and I'm still only in the pre-build stage. I've got my VFD and motor, now I need some steel, wheels, and warmer weather in the garage. It was -18 this morning... :(
When I was going to buy a grinder this is the one I wanted. Placed my order and 6 months later they still had not made my order. I asked and got no where. The quality of this grinder is unbelievable but I needed a grinder. So the other one I looked at was TW-90. Just as well made and comes with all the bells and whistles. And have the surface grinder for it. Which I believe red beard got the idea for his DYI one. P.S. at the time your grinder was $3500
To day I jest got a Brodbeck 2x72 2 horse variable speed tilt table free shipping and with knife talk discount I saved 250 plus whatever the shipping would have been i’ve done my research and for the money this is the best grinder out there in total with a small wheel attachment 2200 that’s crazy 😛
Just ordered an Ameribrade due to the apparent high quality and decent price point. Doesn't have a swank piston for the horizontal mode, though. Us plebs have to rely on our own muscles instead of waiting on our butlers to disengage the catch!
@@RedBeardOps I hope that contact wheel is top notch. I will let you know how my grinder tracks in a couple months! I need to figure out getting or making a glass platen for the Ameribrade. Not sure if there is an industry standard for platens? I'm so new to the 2x72 game!
@@henryhenry7170 Yeah it's a certain type of ceramic. I think they use the same stuff on fire places... anyway, I like them, but they are fragile. Be carful with them once installed or you can crack them. I cracked mine with the work rest by accident. Taking it off is a bear too.... Now days I stick with steel... I can always just take it off and surface it if need be. I've seen some platens made from carbide... that seems like an awesome idea to me.
Great look at that machine. Im currently running a TW-90 but I am looking to add another machine to the bench and I like the way this one functions and the accessories look bomber, thanks for the thorough look at this rig. I REALLY like the reverse feature.
I've heard great things about the TW90. I think it may run a different size tooling arm than this one? Something to check out before buying for sure. Cheers man.
Man West Texas is cold too! I can't wait to get back into the shop... really makes the case for getting a good split system in there... maybe one day. Cheers man, stay safe.
That is an amazing grinder. I was looking at this grinder and the Reeder grinder for my second a few years ago...unfortunately both of these companies offer no viable shipping options for Canada. Looking forward to what you put out on that beast man👍👊
Down the road I plan on doing a detailed review of this machine. Let me know what yall would want to see! 🙌 - - Also I started a subreddit for 2x72 belt grinders... I love these machines and figured we 2x72 lovers needed a community page - www.reddit.com/r/2x72BeltGrinders/
What are you doing with the other grinder? Having 2 setup is a luxury, but every once in awhile you find yourself with both running, going back & forth from horizontal to vertical. Reverse is also amazing for sharpening on the belt, you don't worry about the knife hitting your gut(use the back of the top wheel). Hope all is well, take it easy.
@@RedBeardOps Yeah, I was wondering. It's not needed. My KMG does tilt, so I bought the 2nd. Look up reeder grinder sharpening jig, you might wanna make one. I know you like making these tools. I just ended up buying one.
Most of grinders I saw has a little lateral oscillaton movement, does it interfiere in the grinding of the plunge line?? Congrats terrific tool my red friend!!
Hey Carlos, it depends on a lot of things for sure. The quality and age of the belts plays a big part. Getting the plunges right takes practice and knowledge of your equipment.
Hello my friend, how do I buy the plans of the parts and etc of this machine that you built? Thanks in advance for the excellent content. I'm your fan.
@@RedBeardOps but it's not exactly going to be 2x72. The only belts i can get where i live are 50mmx2000mm. But if you are interested I'm building the grinder Jeremy Schmidt designed. Had to alter the plans quite a bit to make it work in metric tho
@@Birb_of_Judge Very cool! I should of said I love all knife making belt grinders! I started a thread here on blade forms to show off 2x72 girnders.... feel free to post it up there when you're done! www.bladeforums.com/threads/show-off-your-grinder-s-v4-0.1773380/page-3#post-20348392
Hey Ira, man I got lucky and knew a guy. If I were you looking for a second hand machine, I'd be looking here too - www.bladeforums.com/forums/for-sale-knifemaking-supplies-tools.765/
Just got hands on a free treadmill, so looking to build my own at the moment.. I've seen the DCKNIVES blog plans - do you know of any free plans that use a gas strut tensioner instead of a spring?
Very cool DB! I do not. You may be able to fab something up though looking at others. The KMGs have been using a spring for decades without issues though.
ok perfekt, a nice one! but I have one question. I have built my 2x72 belt grinder by my own and and I think this small (belt wibbel-wobbeling) is in case of: the wheels are not in perfekt alighment or lineup...they are not 100% parallely to each other. but...your new belt grinder got the same problem, maybe is problem with the belts? greetings from germany
Hey man, put a new belt on it and check. When I put a new belt on this guy it's rock solid and straight. I should of shot all that video with a new belt...
Hello from Texas. I've been to Germany, it's a nice country. I also spent some time getting my diy belt grinder to track right. Some suggestions for you: 1. Get a nice long straight edge ruler and check that the wheels are on the same plane. Put the straight edge of the ruler against the outside end of the drive wheel and then see if the ends of the other wheels line up. The tracking wheel has to be adjustable so it doesn't necessarily need to pass this test. 2. Is your idler wheel plate (sometimes called a D plate) homemade or did you buy it? Either way, how thick is it? 1/4" (6mm) stock is not going to work because it'll flex too much to allow good tracking. 3/8" (9.53mm) is better. Also use your straight edge to check that the d plate is nice and flat. Hope this helps
Hey T, I've never had a TW90, but have heard they're excellent machines. It may be biased feedback, but I've heard people say they like the NorthRidge better.... but I'm sure others will say the opposite. I think the TW90 uses "non-standard" tooling arms too (not 1.5x1.5)... I may be wrong about that though.... bottom line... they're both great machines
