for me the female serial killer stories are fun because it's a fun fictional representation of female rage. it gives me a way to process that feeling in a safe and escapist way! and shows that other gruesome side of female desire, anger, etc. (as i'm typing this, you are reading the part of the book that says just this lol)
I would highly, highly recommend Odin’s child by Siri Pettersen! It’s a YA fantasy but still feels very mature in it’s plot, characters and worldbuilding. Some fun thing it contains are a multiuniverse, an exestential crisis and a guy with a talking raven in his throat… ( also your videos are always the highlights of my day!!!)
I really want to read Bunny. Also I maybe love to try tiktok out for book recommendations. I normally just use booktube but I like to try some new books.
you going over how the guy in Spanish love deception is swoon worthy by doing normal decent things is putting me in a dark and scary place on how low my standards are...
If you love fake dating then you should read The Love Hypothesis, I really loved it and if you love enemies to lovers, office romance, I suggest the hating game. It's good as well. "When jules verne's characters went to the centre of the earth, they found it: the bar for men. it is that low". I can't- XD.
yessss the spanish love deception is so bad omg 😭😭😭 also im so tired of men in books all looking the same..... they're just all giant, tall, buff, huge dudes with no personality 🥴 anyways....
You said you liked Bunny because of the vagueness, and having to work to figure out what was going on... I think you'd really like Piranesi! It's a short book, but it's an absolute work of art.
I'm almost halfway through "A Certain Hunger" and I'm loving it so far. I learned some new words too: lambent = flickering lightly jejune = dull unctuous = oily, insincerely earnest abstemious = eating and drinking in moderation comestible = edible
Jejune is specifically of the mind, not dull in, for example, colour. Lambent is more flowing than flickering. Flickering can suggest a speed and agitation that is not present in lambent. The difference is inherent in the sound and rhythm of the words: flicker has sudden sharp sounds; lambent is soft (said with a soft ‘e’. Lam-bunt).
@@BiscuitGeoff Ah, that's what I get for looking at the first set of definitions in an online dictionary search. ^J^ Now I wish I had written down the page numbers from where those words came.
Already laughing at the Spanish Love Deception bit. I haaaated that book and I tried to pretend I get why people like it but I actually don’t 😂 everyone is terrible and the writing is bad and the sex is actually also just bad.
yes!!! SLD wasn’t the worst thing i’ve ever read but it was just bad (in my opinion). if i ever met aaron blackword or whatever his name is i would call the police
Leonie: I have no plans to do this kind of thing. Sounds like what someone who had plans to do that kind of thing would say! ::evil laughter:: Anyway, nah, you're a delight, Leonie! Absolutely love these videos. I've been letting Amazon (and YOU!) pick my new reads and it's worked well so far! Have a wonderful week!
I havent seen a single booktuber liking The Spanish Love Deception. Im glad that I get discarded from reading bad books, because I only have time for good books, and that list is long! :) Bunny sounds intruiging!
Good thing I was in the middle of bites of my dinner when you brought up Jules Verne and Journey to the Center of the Earth. I would have sprayed food from uncontrollable laughter if I had just taken a bite. 🤣🤣🤣
Completely agree with your thoughts on A Certain Hunger! I had a similar feeling after I read it, there is such a sense of catharsis in reading about a character that has no pretense of likability, who is so unapologetically horrible that you almost revell in reading about them. I think this is also the reason why I enjoy Ottessa Moshfegh's writing so much, or even Gone Girl - there is something so compelling about a character that thrives on not having to be likable or good
My favorite weird, vague book is Untold Night and Day by Bae Suah. That book reads like a dream, characters are the same people but not, things repeat but differently, everything starts losing shape and nothing makes sense. + Translated by one of my favorite translators: Deborah Smith. We discussed in a bookclub and half of the people absolutely loved it, while the other half was completely lost because they couldn't find a plot.
I too loved Bunny. I love weird books and vagueness in them and all. It didn't become a new favourite, but I am looking forward to rereading it soon. I hope to read her All's Well too, but that is very different in comparison from what I understand. I do have suspicion that will become a favourite, but we'll see.
The moment i saw you picked the spanish love deception i knew there was a rant coming, i read like half of it before dnfing, i kept waiting it to get good and it just didnt happen.....
I have a very specific book recommendation for you but I feel like you would love it !! "our wives under the sea" weird, gothic, eerie story about a woman that went on a submarine mission deep in the ocean and when she comes back nothing is what it seems. it's also sapphic!!
I love The Spanish Love Deception but I TOOOOOOOTALLY agree that Aaron's character has no depth whatsoever and their hate for each other is so baseless and cringy. But I guess that is also the reason why I love TSLD, I was in need of some cringy, no brainer romance 😂
I'm here again to recommend Gideon the Ninth :) it's a sapphic enemies (true enemies) to lovers fantasy, the characters are unhinged and morally gray and has loosely dark academia vibes (pursuit of knowledge goes wrong). So I think you might like it!
The problem with TikTok, like everything in life, is that once it becomes popular, it gets exploited. The popularity of booktok won't be missed by publishers and advertisers so they will plant a lot of books onto the platform instead of spending large amounts on advertising, makes it hard to trust the recommendations on there, hence why loads of poorly rated books seem popular on there. Just got to find the diamonds among the rough lies. Great video as always Leonie 😊
i just finished reading these violent delights and im so thankful to everyone who recommended it to me it is so good and so gut wrenching! definitely gonna pick up bunny and look into a certain hunger now..!
Me watching this video knowing I probably wouldn't like any of these books (because I feel like I'm too illiterate to enjoy this): ... Also me: *adds books to TBR anyways*
If she eats men isn't that kind of a metaphor for her absorbing/adapting "masculine" characteristics? Since she is the opposite of what feminine "should be" like.
out of these i've only read a certain hunger. i was expecting to love it because i thought it was going to be like jennifer's body in book form, which is my favorite movie, but i only liked it. the only interesting parts are when she actually gets to k*lling her lovers, but that lasts like two pages and then it's like 50 pages of her describing expensive dishes that i will probably never eat from countries i'll probably never visit and rambling on about the most uninteresting things such as crops and cow poop. like if i wanted to learn about that i would simply buy a book about agriculture or simply google it, you know? i did enjoy it, i gave it 4 stars and maybe one day i'll read it again, but it was not as good as i expected. maybe if the chapters were in chronological order and each one was about one specific victim à la seven husbands of evelyn hugo instead of just jumping around from like 1998 to 2008 then back to 2000 it would've been better? idk. i just wanted to share this bc i'm really sad that this book slightly disappointed me lol
It's funny that you compare Bunny to a YA sequel, because that's exactly why I'm not loving it. It's a fine book, but the writing is womp-womp; I have never enjoyed YA. It's similar to the writing style of My Year of Rest and Relaxation which I loved besides the writing. On the other hand, A Certain Hunger has been one of my favorite books of the year thus far. Incredible.
Would you do a queer romance haul and review? 1. Mistakes Were Made By Meryl Wilsner 2. Delilah Green Doesn’t care By Ashley Herring Blake 3. The Charm Offensive 4. Kiss Her Once for Me Both by Allison Cochrun
i am so so so so happy you loved bunny!!! it's my favorite book of all time and i recommend it to everyone. it really is a must read. mona awad is a genius and deserves all the praise and attention.
bunny was insufferable. it’s a young adult fiction book but aged up. vapid as hell. it’s really not that “weird” lol. just save yourself a few hours and watch mean girls.
@@Azarilh wait really? haha i don’t recall any and i read it just a few months back. but idk if you’re afraid of a few words in literature i feel bad for your resultant reading temperament
I'm so glad you liked Bunny - I had a very similar reading journey and interpretation of the story. It quickly became a personal favorite that I think about allllll the time. Great video!
Can I send you LEAD ME WHERE THE LIGHT IS OURS - It's such an important book - So much we are kept in the dark about so much and it shares the stories of those who were silenced
Have you read A Dowry of Blood by S.T Gibson? It's a Dracula retelling, told from the perspective of one of his wives! Very gothic and atmospheric with beautiful language!
You've definitely convinced me to read Bunny with this review! Now the important question: do i buy the ebook (cheaper and more practical) or do i buy the more expensive physical copy so i can annotate? 🤔
Hah that Jules Verne comment had me IN TEARS 😂 Honestly I gave up on finding a good hate-to-love books to read cause they are all mediocre at best. Instead someone recommended a turkish TV series out of all things to me and it was soo good, best hate to love I've seen.
@@duplicity9737 You knock on my door (Sen Cal Kipimi I believe is the original title, may have misspelled). Great hate to love OTP with a few more tropes I live like fake relationship etc. I don't really watch foreign TV shows but this one won me over and put my book reading on a break too heh
Im reading Bunny right now and im so excited!!! Just started and since you liked both certain hunger and Bunny i HAVE to reccomend you They Never Learn im guessing is more like Certain hunger (which i havent read) but its have excellent academia vibes aswell
Thanks for talking about Bunny again hahaha. I have an inter-library request pending for it and I already forgot what it was about again lmfao. Now I'm excited for it again.
I was over here defending The Spanish Love Deception out loud.. to literally no one, BUT I totally agree with you on Bunny; I'm excited that you're excited about it. I loved it so so much. I've also just bought a bunch of bunny figurines (thanks Easter 😅) and I'm already ready for a re-read.
I just want to say... You might have told me something I DIDN'T WANT TO KNOW about the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Not happy about this. Next time please announce the spoilers. I'm in pain now 😭.
I know this vid is old but I’m not one to pick up new books I normally get nervous and stick within my bubble of authors I like but tbh.. I’m gonna try Bunny. I love love love things with horror themes and after reading a few pages of it online I think I’ll really enjoy it
1:25 ooh this book was recommended to me by a friend (not via tiktok tho, I actually don't even have tiktok, I'm Not Like Other Girls™ and I use tumblr)
I also adore Bunny. It was my favorite read in 2021. Like you, I started reading it on ebook but couldn't resist buying my own copy. I can't wait to read it again!
I am only at minute 15 of the video but I feel like that Bunny has saved you from hitting a reading slump after this video :D With the Spanish Love Deception it was funny - at first it was hyped and then suddenly all the very negative reviews and opinions hit the internet. I barely read romance but whenever I see the book in the stores now I have to think of it. And I guess if I saw someone grab it, I'd warn them! EDIT: Okay. You got me interested in Bunny now BUT since I started and dnf'd Ninth House I am very anxious when it comes on spending money and time on a dark academia book. (I did buy If We Were Villains just last week, spontaneously though, but have not read it yet. Currently busy with a ton a of other books ^^) EDIT 2: I will be visiting family of my husband in Amsterdam in May. Do you have book store recommendations? I wanna check out the "Donner" for sure. Looked cool in your video and the name is as well. "Donner" in German (my mother's tongue) just means "Thunder" but for my husband (South African, mother's tongue Afrikaans) it is actually a swear word :D
@@TheBookLeo Thx so much for the quick reply! You got Waterstones? OMG! I am SO jealous. Always go there when in London but we don't have one in Vienna :-( Love love loooove Waterstones!
I've been slightly on a binge of your videos, completely out of order (naturally). I found enough videos recommending Gilded Wolves that I've gotten the whole trilogy and started the first. So far, I can definitely see why it would be recommended! I never would have found it without finding your channel, so thank you
bunny was such a weird incredible mind-blowing experience to me! I spent a long time thinking about the ending, how everything wasn't really what it seemed...... or was it? ugh SO good
im reading the spanish love deception rn, im like 150 pages in. im not hating it but its nowhere near as good as i expected for the hype nd the amount of times shes said BLUE EYES/OCEAN EYES i stg its driving me crazy lmao. never properly read a romance before nd this is making me worried for the hating game nd the love hypothesis which i also have ;-;
You’re really making me wanna reread bunny so I can annotate it. I loved it but I remember hardly anything about it. Also you summed up my thoughts about the Spanish love deception perfectly. Idk why it’s so hyped I was eyerolling the whole time.
with annotation, something I started out doing and still do is that if I’m not sure if I’ll like the book enough to annotate, anything I want to annotate, I’ll take a picture of the page on snapchat and mark it up on there so if I do want to keep it and have it annotated, I’ve got the pictures to go back and do the annotations
