Yeah I made a similar comment. Season 1 is brilliant, and better than season 6 in my opinion. Season 6 mostly had a bunch of characters we didn't really know like Butchie, Carlo, Coco, most New York guys, etc. and many of the best characters were already dead. I didn't find the actual mafia war conflict between New York and NJ that compelling. Still good though, but season 1 with Livia, Tony, and Junior squaring off was just **chef's kiss**

Carmela is very condescending and I think she believes a persons worth is tied into power, wealth and prestige. Love it when she talks down to AJ’s super rich girlfriend about decor, not knowing the girls family has famous works of art and seasonal residences

Like Tony, she's *almost* a sympathetic character. She comes just close enough to redemption, without ever achieving it. Their humanity often shines through their deplorableness, but they are, in the end, deplorable people. The show never lets you forget that. It never makes them bona fide protagonists. This is why the Sopranos is so brilliant. It perfectly strikes that balance of presenting sympathetic villains that subsequent shows failed to do.

At least she's not going to hell when she dies.
@thomasbrennan6303

@@Spooky_515 Also her guilt for her willing complicity in the mob, which she attempts to redeem via various means (her devout Catholicism and her separation from Tony). It's an internal struggle she has throughout the series and is her redeeming trait -- she is clearly not a sociopath and has a strong desire to do good. She is an irreproachably good mother, good wife, and good friend, but she is a product of her environment -- arrogant, spoiled and Machiavellian -- and will not hesitate to weild mafia power with its implicit threat of violence. She is quite complex, and Edie Falco knocked it out of the park.

The first season definitely has a very different vibe and look to it, meaning the cinemaphotography. I think over the years I've read a few times that's because the pilot was actually written and filmed to be a possible feature film but it never made it that far, obviously. Then evolved into the show we all know and love. The pilot has that feature film look to it, especially the scene on the porch when Tony and Chrissy have the ''What are you gonna do, go Henry Hill on me now'' conversation.

pilots can be pretty different from the rest of the show in many series. it’s because usually, pilots are filmed long before the rest of the season. the pilot is used to “sell” the series and get a production company to order a full season of it. actors shoot way more pilots than you think, most of them just never get picked up. there are exceptions obviously, like House of the Dragon for instance, the Game of Thrones prequel. that one didn’t follow this pattern because the season was ordered long before they shot anything. so, the more you know!

Good point. Before becoming a Sopranos fanatic, I had tepid interest after watching the first three episodes. I thought it was good, but it didn't blow my mind. Many years later, when I finally purchased the entire box set and began watching, I quickly became hooked after making it midway through the first season. I also agree that it really starts to take off after the first season and just gets stronger until about the very end. I've now watched it four times. Wonder when I'll do it again.

Few things made me happier, as a _Sopranos_ fanatic in his 40s - who watched as the series first aired - than to hear that young people were discovering the show on their own, in particular, around the time of the pandemic, as you did! It definitely is prophetic, in terms of describing how we, as a people, got to this point as a nation and as a species these last few years. You should definitely rewatch soon... few pieces of cinema will ever be as rewarding to rewatch. The older you get, the more you'll get out of it.

You're lucky to have been born during a time in a way that you'll get to watch the show in your teens/twenties when it first aired. I'll definitely rewatch this show one every year and probably pass it down to my future children.

I've rewatched this show at least like six times and its always given me something new. Its always been apart of my life from when I was a kid and my parents would have the soundtractk playing or i would watch with them. Every rewatch has either been "Oh this is something I never noticed" or "hey this kind of relates to my personal life". My favorite episode ironically is the first episode i ever watched, soprano home movies. I watched in 7th grade while i was on a trip with my parents in the same hotel room and i was bored because it wasn't enough action or exciment like their other shows they watched. But when I watched after I became an adult with knowledge of how shows and stories are written, it became my favorite episode. There is so much depth to each episode that this whole series is a peice of art. I hope you keep on making more videos because I've really enjoyed your content on it.

I've re-watched the Sopranos annually pretty much since it first aired. First on VHS tapes, then DVD, now streaming. It's part of my routine. If you weren't around for when the show was new, I guess I can understand why season one seems lackluster in comparison to the rest of the series. But if you are an OG fan who watched it when it was brand new on HBO, the first season will always be your favorite simply because it just hits that nostalgia perfectly and brings back the feeling of seeing something on television that nobody had ever seen before. And it just rocked our world like you cannot even believe. Unfortunately nobody today can relate to the absolute world-changing impact that show had on us. But it's for that reason that season one carries a special place in our hearts and remains totally re-watchable. Objectively, the writers were still trying to find their footing of course. David Chase borrowed a lot from Goodfellas and other mob movies in terms of stylistic decisions, music, etc. for the first few episodes. But the show found its voice by the middle of the season and I think they started building the world brilliantly from there.

Anyway As Someone that is from the neighborhood and still remembers what it was like watching this show with my family every sunday when it was new. i can help u with a couple things. My Dad had a members only jacket he worn everyday no change till it started to fall apart lol, they was very common jackets to see at one point over here. In the show it was used to symbolize these guys being old school and still stuck in the past. I get your not from the America East coast, so i'll try to help u understand. The members only jackets was always low profile basic plain colored and was only trending when those guys was kids. Also Notice Eugene worn one in his last Ep too. It with be comparable to, i guess old Mexican gangsters still walking around with ponchos, or cowboys wearing spurs on there boots. these guys are still mentally living in the past. Rose say it to Camela once even. And only Tony and Christophor realized it early on in ep1 with Tony talking to Dr Melfie. The other guys didn't get it was outdated till the Episode with Tony selling building to Jamba Juice. Ok thats enough, wasn't expecting to type that much. This show still does it for me lol.

I've watched this show five times, and that's not including random episode rewatches. It's a very rewatchable show. The characterization is so good. Great characterization really helps a show age well and makes rewatches more fulfilling. I've settled into season 6b being my favorite. Though I probably enjoy the first two seasons the most. And yes, season 1 feels very different than the rest of the show after you see it all and go back. The series had to find its footing and its own vibe. But I still feel season 1 is one of the stronger seasons primarily due to it being the only season where the Tony-Livia dynamic is at the center. I also feel the overall arc was really good. So, even though the flaws of that season is more obvious than the rest, it still feels like a great introduction.

The one thing I noticed while I rewatch is how few foot soldiers you see in the show. To me, it seems like the entire crew is only a dozen or so guys. I assume each captain would have at least 5 or 6 guys under them yet you never see them. To me, the new jersey mob would have hundreds of members but you never see a captain talking to a group of foot soldiers or giving orders to people who are not deeply in the show.

I’ve said this many times and I’ll said it again, nothing will ever come close to The Sopranos. It changed television forever and without it, we wouldn’t have Breaking Bad, Dexter, or Game of Thrones for that matter. It will forever be the greatest television series ever to air on a television. The fact that it’s still relevant in todays world, even with 16 years passed since the shows final episode shows how brilliant the show, the acting, script writing, and the directing really was. It’s ironic that my girlfriend had never seen the show before and we’re on the last episode, coincidentally with todays date, June 10th, being our last episode and the same date that the last episode premiered. 👏🏻 👌🏻

The fact is... whether he gets killed or not... his life is a life that he will always live in fear. We the audience are just as uncertain as Tony is.... who wants to live like that? Thats the life he has created for himself.

I've always thought that season 1 was great in its own way, but a bit of a slow burn compared to the rest of the series. A lot of TV shows seem to fall off a bit towards the end of their run, but The Sopranos really did stay interesting throughout the entire series. Especially towards the end as Tony's whole world starts to unravel. An undeniably fantastic show!

I have to admit that I really didn't much enjoy the first 6 or so episodes of season 1. It just wasn't what I expected. I expected an intense "mafia show" with alot of underworld themes, but Sopranos is more of a show about a family man who happens to also be a mob boss. It's a great show, and the mafia scenes are very compelling, but it is very much a show that deals alot with family life. The show can be slow, but Once you understand how the show actually is, you can appreciate it a lot more for what it is. It is one of the greatest shows ever made tho.

Possibly a controversial opinion but to me The Sopranos is far better as a family drama than a mob story.

That one random Star Wars cut where it fades from right to left was so jarring, they did once in the entirety of the show. The slow-motion shit also was weird.

Doing it again too, for the 3rd or 4th time now. I can't even remember and that's a beautiful thing. It never gets old. I do the same with the Band of Brothers series every now and again. HBO truly constructs some of the best series ever, especially during the early 2000's

Gandolfini died when I had only six episodes left, and despite being hooked to the max, for weeks I couldn't finish the show. I was so invested in this criminal's life, this lovable cnt that made me laugh and made me hate him. And now, the man who brought Tony to life was gone, before he could finish telling me his story. Thanks for the art, James.

Season 1 almost feels like a prequel season. Like it’s giving us some insight into who’s who. Just like someone said about The Wire season 1.
