I’ve been wearing 7 different enduro mountain bike helmets thus far in 2021: the Fox DropFrame Pro, Giro Tyrant, Giro Switchblade, Giro Manifest, Troy Lee A2, Bell Sixer to the aluminum foil secured via sanitary facial mask. All these helmets have been tested by Virginia Tech, with one exception. And you know what? I’ve learned a lot from wearing all these different helmets! I bought the dropframe pro and oh man, I've never had such a comfortable open-face helmet.

loved my Dropframe until I got Bose Tempo glasses. The way the sides come down so much , combined with the strap placement, put pressure on my temples with the glasses. Not horrible, but I ended up going with a TLD A3 for true comfort!

I was all about the half shell for enduro and full face for downhill until I missed a step-down double last year. I spent a few days in a Level 1 trauma center, underwent emergency facial reconstruction surgery, and had to learn how to drink through a straw again. Now I'm one of the nerds grinding up Tiger/Galbraith in a full face. It took awhile to stop feeling self-conscience about overdoing protection levels, but hey, I'm back in the saddle and getting in trouble. It seems like more people are doing it, too.. It's TLD Stage for enduro now. Bonus- chin-mount for camera angles.

Well done Jeff you turned what could be a boring technical review into a entertaining and really informative video. Helmets don’t seem to get enough love in review videos but honestly it is one of the most important things a biker will purchase. I have to admit I can spend hours going over bike specs and geo numbers before making a purchase and then just buy a helmet because I like how it looks. This video made me re-think that and I will go do some research now on the projection ratings of my current helmets and see if maybe I should upgrade.

I’d highly recommend the Giro Fixture MIPS for anyone on a budget. It’s pretty comfortable, and both myself and some of my friends have had some gnarly crashes where the helmet definitely did it’s job.

I bought a 2021 Fox Speedframe Pro MIPS recently, before I had seen any of this. It's good to know my own research led me to one of the safest helmets made. I was previously using an ABUS helmet and while very light and VERY breazy, I just never felt that it would protect my melon in a crash. Different with the Speedframs Pro tho, I like this helmet immensely and I feel safe wearing it!

I have owned numerous brands of helmets over the last 30 yrs of mtn biking and Giro has become my go to brand. Their shoes fit me well also and like their helmets, they always have a style or fit I like for my personal budget.

I just had to switch away from the Fox speed frame, because here in Phoenix we ride at first and last light in the summer and the fox visor won't come down far enough to block sunlight in your eyes. Got a Kali, better.
@JeffKendallWeed
@JeffKendallWeed 3 года назад
Yeah, the Kali Maya visor is really good. That's probably my favorite feature of the Maya. I wish more helmet companies would embrace the big visor. Thus far the Switchblade visor at 130mm is the best one I've used yet. If I can get a moment, I'll try throwing that visor on the Tyrant.

Helmet shopping is the worst for my ~63cm oval head. I am currently shopping for a new helmet so I appreciate this to hear some opinions on helmets I was looking at. (Edit 63cm just saw that. 63mm would also be an evil helmet to find. Original said 63mm not cm for head size.)

Just went through the process of getting a new trail helmet. After trying ~5 different premium offerings from the large brands, I settled on the Giro Manifest. Crash ratings are very important to me but fit is king. You want a helmet that disappears on the ride. I don't ever notice the Manifest when riding. If a helmet isn't comfortable then you won't want to wear it or it will become distracting. Same applies for full faced and even motorcycle helmets.

I realize this vid is a bit older. Just wanted to say that it’s pretty well-known (by now, anyway) that you unfortunately have to size up in the Dropframe. I got an XL and it fits great, and Fox also includes extra pads for adjustment. Very comfy and secure, though it’s definitely hotter than my POC Kortal half-shell (no duh).

I have been running a Giro Tyrant for 2 years and I highly recommend it. One of the upsides to this helmet is the incredible durability, I have crashed into trees at about 30 kmh (18 mph for the Americans) and the helmet has not cracked or been damaged, I'm planning on replacing it soon just to freshen it up a bit but I cannot explain how much I like it.

Really informative video! I carefully considered all the helmets here before going to my local bike shop and falling in love with the Fox drop frame. It fits my head perfectly, and feels SO safe. Ive never had a helmet with a visor, so shielding my eyes from the sun is pretty kush. Hopefully I’ll never have to actually put the helmet to the test 🤞😵‍💫

Nicely done video. My Speedframe just saved my ass last week. Took a head shot in a rock garden at speed. I felt the mips move on my head and soften the blow on impact. Walked away with a slight concussion, but felt like it could have been so much worse. Looking at half shells for my next lid.

I was hoping to see a review of the POC helmets. I have one, and I kind of want to know if my problems with fitting sunglasses are unique to me. Actually, I would've liked to see that covered more in general here, but I guess no news is good news? No trouble with glasses with any of these? I was surprised that you spoke so glowingly about the Giro Tyrant given those closed ears. No way to put in and out earbuds with that.

@JeffKendallWeed The new Fox Dropframe Pro has you covered now with BOA in the back. I just replaced my old Pro version after a big crash. But beware Fox has changed sizing on this new lid. A straight Medium swap was too big and I had to go to a Small.

Troy Lee Designs A2 here. It looks killer, and is very well ventilated. I feel safe in it, but it's quite large and/or bulky. 60cm balloon head so went for XL/XXL 😶🤙 Seems like the Fox Speedframe may have a more snugly fit. Gonna check it out. Looks great too.

Looking for a bit more protection I got the Giro Tyrant to replace my Bell Sixer. It's comfortable and protection is great, BUT THE VISOR IS WAY TOO SMALL. I tend to ride in the mornings and got tired of squinting into the sun. So I've gone back to the Bell Sixer for now. Giro Tyrant is a great helmet except for the visor - wish I could return it.

The bike is solid and my Ebike conversion went great. ru-vid.comUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Very smooth ride at 30mph with no problems (135 miles ridden so far). The picture is a bit deceiving - there is WAY less space in the center of the frame than it shows. The suspension connection takes up the entire thing. So I needed to attach my battery on the bottom of the frame and my controller on the top. Instructions for assembly were lacking but honestly it wasn't too hard to figure out even though I have very little bike knowledge. Watched some youtube videos on adjusting the disk brakes but that was it. Still, I am loving it and very happy with the purchase.

I've ridden Bell helmets for a long time, and will throw it out there that Giro and Bell are owned by the same company and many of their helmets share technology. I just got a Super Air R and I love how light it is for a full face helmet, but then I can remove the chinbar and it becomes a standard half-shell helmet. Wish it had a magnetic closure though...

you know head shape is more than circumference, of course your helmet might not fit perfectly if you only use circumference to messure it, your head could be longer, flater, rounder, pointyer, have weard anges, etc, thats like basing your bike fit off only the wheelbase, there some to it, so a dummy head and urs even with the same sercomfrance could be very differnet

I'm an Enduro biker as well using O'Neal helmets, but I can say that you are a far way better rider than me, no question!! Ride safe..😊

Ya I have boath fox helmets and my drop frame is a large and my speed frame is a medium, I am glad that I am not the only one that noticed that. On the other hand the drop frame might just be a bit different because of its ones size non adjustable design. but I am still kinda confused.

I didn't turn my face away in a small crash and smashed my teeth out, now I look a bit more Lloyd Christmas than Sam Pilgrim! 🤣

I love my Tyrant, surprisingly cool and very comfortable. I sometime forget that I'm riding and open face.

GREAT video. That being said, what I got most from it is that I 100% will need to go into shops to try them on and most likely I’d just buy it there instead of buying it online.

Everyone knows that the tin foil helmet is the best one. No one wants to get their minds hacked when they are out riding deep in the mountains by these darn space aliens lol

Visors are important for a lot of reasons, I had a crash in a January’s over the bars, I hit hard o. The ground face first and my visor took a lot impact, it snapped, but I got a new one, I still got a blond oh nose and a big bruise, but after visiting dentists and doctors since they said I would have chipped at least my center 4 teeth, broken my nose, and easily my prescription glasses. Visors are important and I will always find a long visor from this day on

Great information!! Has someone who has a previous neck injury. I have to too choose between my full face or my regular helmet. Kinda scary to choose given the potential outcomes.

I got a Leatt DBX 4.0 and used it last year full season. First time I used a fullface. When climbing I take it off, when in the city i ride with it. Its not too bad. It has arround 850g and is very ventilated. Id like a open face helmet again but I would feel 'naked' with one =)

I just picked up the Bell Sixer and really like it... light and airy with great ventilation and a GoPro mount. NOT cheap though...
