NOTE FROM SLIM: Sorry, I forgot to mention one thing, milage! The Silverado had 174,000 Kilometres or about 108,000 miles on it when I first got it. Thanks! SP 2nd UPDATE: This truck engine does NOT have AFM (Active Fuel Management), so no need to tell me to bypass it! PLEASE do not ask questions in this comment chain. Post them on a separate new comment so I can respond. Thanks!

Just a word of caution with these trucks. I was a fleet repair shop manager. We had over 300 of them. They all needed cam and lifters between 140-160k miles. On 80% of them they needed torque converters and a transmission overhaul at 120-140k miles. Research these issues and decide if you want to preemptively do the maintenance on them. We started tuning the ecm’s on the trucks to disable the active fuel management and to not allow torque converter slip in 4-6th gears.

Slim, nice new ride. At 18:18, look under your truck at the inside of the driver's side rear tire as you're going through the mud puddle. There is either a hose or an electrical harness that's dangling, not connected to anything. I'm guessing it's the electrical harness for towing. Check it out because you don't want branches or rocks ripping it up. Take it to a pro for a good look over and safety check. I'm 66 and want to see you live a long life.

Having owned many LS powered Chevys , you picked something that is easy to work on and every shop can work on it. It may ride a little rougher and be bigger than the Liberty but that’s the only positives it has over the Silverado. Just wait until you pull your trailer with it. It’ll pull it with ease and have the stones to get up and go should you need to merge on the highway or pass a logger.

Agreed. I have an old Jeep Wagoneer we take on road trips. Guess what lurks under that hood? Just went to Oklahoma and Texas and back from TN. Hey Slim, I bought (and still drive) a 2003 Chevy Tahoe new in that year with that 5.3 L motor. Got 243,000 miles on it. Replaced the tranny 7 years ago. Other than that, that motor still runs like a raped ape 🦍 and no other major problems. Still rides nice, plenty of power with the tow package, and burns no oil. Not bad for a vehicle that’s almost the legal drinking age….

We switch to a truck 2012 and never looked back. We decided on a diesel truck, as we tow large trailer. Our current truck is the 2016 dodge ram 2500, bought new and we are approaching 200K. We have a cab, but did something different for out needs. Will be putting out a video on it later. We do all our own maintenance on it. Enjoy...... simplyoffgridlife

You are going to enjoy the truck. I put a sheet of foam insulation and mdf on the floor. I cover it with foam tiles that are easy to remove and wash. When i camp in it, i put in 8 five gallon totes with three 2x2 pieces of 1/4 in plywood on top and a foam bed topper cut to fit. It is easier to move around with the bed elvated and you can see out the windows but still sit up straight.

By now you probably have the back of your Silverado set up the way you want it, just an idea that worked for us: we put a sheet of plywood on top of the rails of the pickup bed (laying it up off the floor), close to the cab, putting our sleeping bags on top of plywood . This left the entire floor empty to put gear in full length.

I have the 2014 version of the same truck and so far it has been very reliable and easy to take care of. It is a good era for these trucks, still modern but not yet so full of fancy technology. There is really only one known issue with them - that engine does not tolerate missed oil changes because of the "active fuel management" system. So keep up on your oil changes if you want to avoid a VERY expensive repair. It also has a place already set up for a second battery under the hood, an easy upgrade to make if you are doing a lot of camping and want to run accessories and such off the 12v system while parked. You could put in a deep cycle battery and a regular starter battery with an isolation switch very easily, with everything under the hood.

Wow, I did not see that coming! I've watched your videos of the original liberty all the way to now, can't believe it's been that long already. As a Ram 1500 owner I've always envied your small/nimble setup, I've thought numerous times after watching your videos that maybe I should go smaller too, but I guess this is just proof that there are pros/cons to everything and there is no perfect setup. Your decision in the context of building the house in a remote area makes a lot of sense to me too. I wish you best of luck with your new rig!

It looks mighty good and all I would add are good quality mud flaps at all corners and a hood bug deflector ! Now check that loose left rear parking brake cable and get a set of good "All Weather" tires and get on the road ! Just be safe and we all enjoy your videos.

It looks like someone has cranked the torsion bars up on that thing given the camber of the front wheels. Might want to look into that. Also, research what rear axle ratio it has based on the RPO codes in the glove box on a sticker. Lastly, lube the driver's door hinges LOL.

I had a Chevy for years and she had over 350,000 miles on her when the head gasket started to leak, sold her to a friend of my sons and he dropped another engine in her and hauled his race cars back and forth across the country (US) with her until she got hit by another car and caught on fire. Great truck in amazing shape and you can't touch one for that price within 500 miles of where I live in the states. Very nice to not be in the rust belt where rockers, cab corners, and wheel wells live on un-molested. When you first pulled up with it I was convinced it was a diesel based on sound alone. But when you said it had the 5.3L V8 I knew the sound very well. I have owned several of these exact engines and one of them in particular sounded just like this one, due to lifter noise. At the time I didn't have extra money for repairs so I just kept up with the regular service schedule and ignored my lifter noise. The engine continued to run fine and never left me stranded. But with the type of traveling you do I would recommend having a well versed chevy LS mechanic look at it and make their recommendations on how to repair that before you head out to remote areas of the bush. With the low mileage on that truck a little money spent now could easily give you well more then another 100,000 miles without any major issues. Very nice new truck you picked up.

The 5.3 is a rock solid engine if you stay on a strict maintenance schedule. It has narrow oil channels in the motor. Any sort of sludge or debris in the oil can cause problems. It's not a change oil 1,000 miles past due type of kit. My 2011 Suburban is 150k and going strong. Mechanically awesome......... electrics, not so awesome. The GM electrics gobblin lives in all of them. Happy driving Slim🫡

I have a '21 Silverado with the 5.3+8spd, on rural backroads I've pushed as high as 24mpg tank avg with super light stock highway tires. I upgraded 1 size wider tires and from a highway tire to a P-rated all terrain (P to keep weight down, Falken Wildpeak AT3W) and I've definitely lost some mileage. My 16-18mpg city mileage has dropped to more like 14-16. Next tires I think I'll go back to stock narrow width, but maybe get a taller ratio tire instead, the rolling resistance increase on the wider tire is definitely noticeable. I also tow a 17ft Casita Heritage with mine, and depending on location I was getting about 14-15mpg towing from Texas back up to Michigan. I'll be taking it down to Florida here in a month so we'll see how it still tows and mileage with the new tires.

Good morning, Slim. I’ve had my 66 beetle since 2005, it would be difficult for me to get rid of it. Your Jeep has been a good friend, so it must have been sad to get rid of it. ✌️🇺🇸🇨🇦✌️

Definitely a great truck for your uses. The old 5.3 is rock solid and gets great mileage if you just cruise along at sane speeds. Plus good hauler for your cabin projects.

I've got the Silverado's cousin, the GMC Sierra with the same 5.3 engine. I get 24mpg on the highway. It's a 2001 and I've had no issues. Buy a bed mat for the back, it'll be easier on your knees. It still rides really nice on a set of Goodyear Wranglers. They may cost a little more but they're worth it. If you don't need the back seat you might want to remove it to give you even more storage space.

Slim, i hope your Silverado is as good as ours has been. 2004 1500 bought used in 2008. We have 240,000 miles on it and very few repairs. We pull a 4300 lb trailer. Such good times! Wishing you the same.

As a mechanical engineer, i recommend researching the active fuel management (AFM). From a reliability standpoint, i highly recommend buying the module to deactivate it. You did do very well on the price and if taken care of should last a long time.

yes I was going to comment on that too. Not sure if canada spec chevys had it.

I agree. The AFM is mostly a pain to manage. I've found that having the trans in Manual 5 gear will deactivate the system while in town and lower speeds. It's not such an issue on the highway. Also clean synthetic oil, changed religiously every 3-4k miles has kept my engine free of damning sludge.

This truck does not have AFM. The garage just confirmed it. SP

@SlimPotatohead great news! A friend of mine was able to get an EPA compliant rebuilt engine without AFM to install in his Suburban that previously failed 2 AFM engines (he got the vehicle for $500!).

Slim, make sure to have someone turn off the active fuel management as it leads big engine issues. Once that is done it will be a great truck for you.

Slim, congratulations on the "new"vehicle, hope it will bring you more fun as the Jeep :) The Yukon Challenge was and still is my favourite trip of yours, rewatch them quite often, especially the one with the paddlewheelers in Dawson City.

Kind of miss the Jeep, it was iconic but I understand the change. Looks like you got a great deal on a good looking truck and the very best of luck with the new to you, Silverado.

Great purchase, I think you will be happy with the reliability of that truck. Your ride might be a little harsher on the open road but most of the time highways are not what you are traveling. I look forward to the adventures ahead.
