At this Massive estate sale I found a huge treasure! I found sewing notions, knitting supplies, zippers, embroidery hoops, patterns, threads, ribbons and so many more unique items like sanitary belts and dress shields! It wasn't the video I had originally planned for this week, but I got too excited about my amazing finds not to share!

Engineering knits is a place for people who enjoy all kinds of vintage and antique crafts - from sewing to knitting, crochet to embroidery I like to try it all. I definitely have a preference for historical fibre crafts, and it is my dream to one day make an entire outfit from sheep to sweater. I hope you enjoy watching me and my favorite companion, Nutella, struggle through some fascinating projects!

It's so wonderful that this woman's things were bought by someone who truly cares and not just bought up by a person only interested in selling for a profit. What a haul!

There was a local woman here who owned a yarn store in the 70's. When it closed down she took all the yarn and stuck it in boxes in her huge basement. They told me her basement was the size of most houses and she filled it to the roof with yarn and knitting stuff. When she died they had a massive yarn sell and sold each ball for $1. Books were $5. All the money went to a charity she was deeply involved in, and it was a wonderful opportunity for people who knew her to share her stories with the buyers. It was fun for everyone and they raised a lot of money. I came home and told my fiance, now husband, that is what I want him to do with all my knitting and crochet stuff when I die. Sell everything for a $1 each and give the money to the local animal shelter or give everything to Project Linus which is a wonderful charity.

I got so addicted to estate sales over the summer. Garage sales are typically the crap people don't want or need, but estate sales are often the things the owners loved so much they held onto and used for years and years. And me buying the stuff means that it all can hopefully can live on and get used, and not end up in a thrift store or landfill.

I hit an estate sale like that once. Thousands of cookbooks, two looms, quilts and quilt blocks and quilt tops and fabrics, weaving supplies, yarn and knitting and crochet books/patterns/tools, sewing patterns. I took home a couple of boxes of things, with my favorite goodies being carefuly wrapped fabrics purchased from shops in Paris and Copenhagen. The Copenhagen package contained a gorgeous mid Century upholstry wool with a handwritten note from the shop owner saying how much he enjoyed seeing her again. The Paris package had a houndstooth wool perfect for a skirt, carefully wrapped in tissue and tied with a big satin bow. In the knitting books and pamphlets I found yellowed pieces of paper with knitting instructions for garments typed on a typewriter. Would be interesting to knit one of them and see what it turns into! While I was thrilled with my purchases and pleased to be able to give an appreciative home to some of her carefully curated collection, I felt sad that I never got to meet her. I'm sure she would have been a delightful person to know.

The strange scissors with the white on them are not for sewing or crafting. They are kitchen scissors. You use them to chop vegetables and things. as for the fabric the fringed piece is either a bed or furniture cover or a table cloth. Because it is fringed on all sides it is finished piece. But of course you can cut it and use it for whatever you want.

The fringed piece is most probably a table cloth. It might be uncomfortable as a shirt or dress because the fabric was not meant to be worn, but it might be nice for a pair of summer trousers. The skin on the legs tends to be less sensitive.

I used to go to estate sales and collect stuff like this all the time before the pandemic. I especially loved finding handkerchiefs and table linens, because a lot of people buy pretty linens and then never use them, or only use them once, so I find pretty embroidery and whitework in like-new condition for like, 50 cents apiece or something crazy like that. I hope estate sales never catch on amongst the masses, because I want it all for myself!

A trick for removing pit stains from clothing is to use shampoo. Shampoo is designed to remove/breakdown human fats and oils and that's what pit stains are. I've found the best shampoo is one that leaves your hair squeaky because it really cleans. The other thing I use is one of those detangling brushes with the plastic/silicone bristles, it works to agitate the stain without tearing the fibers of the clothes.

Dress shields...not as efficient as you might think. I've worn them almost daily in my younger years. There are better and more efficient alternatives for protecting your clothing with today's technology. I saw two of the fabrics you acquired which are definitely drapery/home deco fabrics. At least one of the wool plaids was originally meant for men's wear. The notions were fascinating and so familiar to me. As a child, I remember them so well from my mother's stash of must have sewing needs. The books...what a treasure trove of long-forgotten information. Congratulations, you hit the jackpot and I truly envy you.

At timestamp 9:06 for the fall fabric. 1970s wide leg trousers or skirt (solid color)with knee boots. For fabric a blouse and then as a lining for a cap 1970s. I would do cape in solid color. Or a solid coat and use fabric for lining 😀

It looks like the strange looking scissors are chenille scissors. You either sew thin strips of fabric to a base layer or you sew two layers of fabric in strips at a fixed distance then cut between then, and you end up with a fabric a old whihc has rows and rows of fringe.

The 70s fall fabric would make such a beautiful skirt! Like I could envision a 1950s or Edwardian full skirt with a white blouse. Or use it as accent to an ivory or off white 1950-60 button up dress, like where the buttons go, the collar, cuffs, hem, etc

When my siblings put our poor mother in a nursing home, her entire collection of sewing, embroidery and crochet supplies that she had collected since the 50s, were thrown out. How sad and too bad that this happened. It may have been an oversight or mistake that someone would feel very sorry for if they knew how you felt. Not speaking to your siblings doesn't give anyone a way to say they are sorry. Your family is far more important than the stuff you lost.

Really enjoyed watching your excitement as you shared your purchases from the estate sale. Given the price of the McCall's skirt pattern (5113), I'd say it was more likely from the late 70s, maybe early 80s because by the 90s the price of patterns was well passed $1.35 regular price. Plus, I wore similar skirts in the late 70s and early 80s. (Yep, I'm that old.) The aprons looks great; the "flimsier" white one with matching cap definitely goes with a maid's uniform or costume thereof. My Mother had a lot of dress shields that she especially wore with suit jackets that usually had coordinating shell blouses underneath. They definitely protect your clothes. You can tack them in or pin them with small safety pins. The fabric with the fringe looks like an already-made bed covering or tablecloth. IIf so, it might be good for a chair or table covering, pillows, or some such where the fringe can be maintained. Your circa 70s (or throwback to) Fall print might make a cute long skirt with McCalls 5113. The gauzy white print would make a cute summer shell blouse. You've got a lot of sewing in your future!

I love your experimentation, but I think I’ll stick to hand knitting my hexipuffs. I do them differently from the original pattern because I find the cast on too difficult. I cast on with 4 needles (5,5,10) and then increase and decrease as required. Then I turn the hexipuff inside out and do a three needle cast off. Nice and quick and mindless!

I would like to sew them and use them, but I can't figure out if they criss cross in the back and attach near the waist or if they attach on the ends of the skirt part (which curve around the sides of my body, but don't meet up behind my back). I've been looking at pictures online and haven't seen anything to confrim placement. Waist or bottom (skirt ) part-- any thoughts?

I have my mother's pinking shears. I went to an old family hardware store where they sharpen scissors. Pinking shears aren't normally sharpened. The screw that holds them together is tightened and they work like new. Cutting tin foil isn't a good idea as it eventually damages the smooth edges on each tooth. Shears that are in a seriously bad way can be taken apart and each tooth sharpened at the correct angle, same as for chisels, with an appropriate dremel attachment.

Toilet didn't always mean what it does today! It used to mean things you did to get ready such as washing, moisturiser or makeup - from the French toilette, meaning dressing room (and previously just dressing, and before that it was the word for the cloth on the dressing table, coming from the word "toile" meaning cloth)
