So agree. It is so heartbreaking to think where we are right now, so callous and divided. Seeing so many that this young man does not know: BOB DYLAN WAS THERE! Steve Perry, Hall & Oates, Kenny, Willie, Cindi, Bette, DIANA ROSS - sounded so awesome and so did DIONNE WARWICK - amazing...makes you want to cry......why can't be be more like that now........

Exactly! Also,.after a few takes, (because this was recorded directly after the American Music Awards) Stevie Wonder was getting tired. He wanted to finish up. So, he told them them: If we don't get it soon, Me and Ray Charles are going to drive you all home! So, they ended up with this incredibly beautiful piece of music and humanity!

@@sherylreed3558 Actually Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, and the director of the song all wrote this song together. Its very well documented on how this great song came into existence, you should check it out. As I believe there is a documented TV episode about it.

They did it after one of the music awards. Michael Jackson planned on a few to do the song and others caught wind and showed up. I just seen a documentary on this a few months ago. It was really interesting.

It was after the Grammy's that year I believe so they were all in town. I think Madonna was on tour, and Prince didnt want to do it

It is such an emotional, giving authentic feeling from this song...and the faces and the power of those gifted professional artists....all of them!! Paul Simon, I am sure this young man does not know. Kim C - "Betty Davis Eyes" ..lol; the Pointer Sisters, on and on.

@Becky Guthrie ...Sorry, Becky, but this was not the king of pop's idea, and MJ didn't organize the project or get the artists together. It was the idea of legendary singer, humanitarian, and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte after he saw news images of the suffering going on in Africa because of the famine. Belafonte sought out music manager Ken Kragen about his idea. Instead of going with a benefit concert, they worked out the idea for getting together a lot of top artists to come and do parts in one song that could be released as a single. The goal was to spread awareness about the serious need and raise funds to help feed the people directly who were starving. Harry and Ken engaged the help of Quincy Jones to organize the project, gather the artists, and produce the record. Quincy did a great job getting so many to contribute their talents to the cause. He knew most of the artists would be in town for the American Music Awards, and he invited them to come to the loaned studio immediately after the awards show finished. So, instead of going to the usual parties after such a show, they came and sang their hearts out. Every single one of them did their part, whether it was a solo line or singing in the chorus. Any of those in the chorus easily would have been great in solo parts. People like Smokey Robinson, or The Pointer Sisters, the other Jacksons, Bette Midler, and even Harry Belafonte himself! All amazing talents. Every single person participating definitely had a one-of-a-kind voice. Singers like Steve Perry, Tina Turner, Al Jarreau, Darryl Hall (John, his partner in Hall and Oates, was in the chorus), Ray Charles, Bruce, James Ingram, Dionne Warwick, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Cyndi Lauper, Kenny Rogers, and the rest... immediately recognizable voices. The whole group stayed through the night to complete the recording session. Quincy was the one who chose who would sing what parts. @Vlogging With Greg ...You noted how perfect the order of the voices was, as Quincy matched in thoughtful contrast who would follow whom. MJ and Lionel Ritchie were given the task of writing the song. They all worked very hard and gave their best. By the way, the USA for Africa project started with one song as a single, but it actually developed into an album, which raised additional monies and awareness. The recognition factor of Michael's involvement certainly helped in the publicity presented to the public, but so did the involvement of each of the other top-tier shining stars. The focus was on the humanitarian effort, though... not to have any artist take the spotlight. Quincy put a sign over the audio entrance, clearly directing that egos were to be left at the door. The resulting effort of all working together was an anthem of hearts heard 'round the world. Rest in Peace, MJ, and all those who've since passed, such as Quincy, Kenny, June Pointer, James Ingram, Ray, bless their souls, and others including the great number of hungry people in Africa who had suffered and died in the famine that prompted this special gathering.

There was a Canadian one as well, Tears Are Not Enough, featuring the likes of Gordon Lightfoot, Burton Cummings, Bryan Adams, Geddy Lee, Anne Murray and a host of other great Canadian artists. Check it out too.

What makes this song even more powerful is that nobody knew what was going on other than they were invited to do a Collab with MJ and Lionel as they walked through the door they were handed thier scripts and given roughly 5min to read it then they did it in one take
