Agree. I sow brassica seeds here in Tasmania in late March. Transplant in late April, covering each with a wire waste basket if the cabbage whites are still around. The cauliflowers are all starting to head up now (end of June). Never experience any pest damage.

I learned that the darn slugs absolutely love corn meal ...if you sprinkle it along the edge of the bed, they will eat it and be happy and leave your crop alone. Meanwhile, in the early morning you can come out and collect them to throw into another location far far away. Snails like beer and also the corn meal . The corn meal method saved my seedlings when I learned they are ravenous after eating my first planting of Zinnias ...so when I re-planted, I used the corn meal...even the cheap Jiffy mix..... and have a successful garden now

Eggshells won't work for slugs, I tried it... Beer on the other hand worked really good! I put the plastic cup in the ground, so that the level of the beer is underneath the soil and the slugs just fell in it. Maybe there are some better solutions though

Becky your gardens are looking gorgeous! One thing I heard from RuthAnn from Homesteading with the Zimmermans is with her potatoes, when they flower she cuts the flowers off then all that energy goes into the roots for bigger potatoes. You might want to do an experiment by some cut some leave and see what happens. You do make gardening so fun. Thank you for all your great content. 🌻💐🌾🍓🥬🫛🍠🧅🧄🧁🥧🍪🍩☕️🥰

For slugs, pour a can of beer in a pie tin. They come by the droves with their little antanea up and drink. It will get your "slug herd" under control! Be sure to watch in the evening as it is kind of amazing. is that contributing to the delinquency of a slug? ;)

I planted dahlia tubers (dinner plate) for the first time. I didn't realize just how large the plant grew. The stalks are approximately, 1" to 1 1/2", heavy and are a little more than 4 feet tall. We just had a storm lastnight and some of my dahlias are laying on the ground. Next year, i want to have a good variety and try from seed like Becky. But...I'll also stake them 😅🏵 I'm so inspired by Becky's gardens that I've been adding more and more each year. So looking forward to seeing what beauty awaits this summer and harvest will be amazing! Happy vibes and wishes for blessings to everyone watching.

Hi Becky, Your stock planters are looking beautiful. I hope you are going to roll those indoors and save them over the winter season. The strawberry plants would do well in those in ground beds, and you could reuse that ground cover from the raised beds to keep the weeds out of them. Also. those cabbage & cauliflower plants you lost would have been better served planted in the cooler insect free fall weather. You truly have a green thumb and a beautiful home & garden. ❤

Becky FYI. Dahlias are incredibly thirsty so need lots of water. Aphids are attracted to the natural sugars in the plant at the top of the stems. I used the same method as you did with the mild soapy water and rinse method. Worked out for me for 10yrs.

Hi Becky, we would always seem to have a slug problem with my grams garden. I remember my uncle would put rock salt on the slugs. You might try that trick if the other methods fail. You could also use a concentrate of vinegar and salt in a water bottle and squirt the slugs with that. Usually cures the slug problem quickly. Your garden is looking beautiful. Can't wait to see those zinnias. They're one of my favorite flowers and that color combo you got was intriguing. I trellis my cherry tomatoes on an arch and love it. It takes almost all season to get there but it does cover.

I have beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, and little jacks growing amongst one another on my trellises. It’s going to be a hot mess and I love the secret garden vibe I’m getting.

Hi Becky! From memory your tarragon is Russian tarragon? If so then it's not your allergies, the tarragon is just not going to be very flavourful - switch it for the French tarragon next year, which has a much better flavour.

Last year I planted a curry plant, it was the most fragrant herb I’ve ever grown. I don’t cook with it but I wish I would have. It was sort of rosemary looking but more silver in color. I wish I would have planted one this year. Maybe try growing and using different and new to you herbs every year.

Another thing you could try to keep the slugs at bay is a garlic drench- simmer 2 full bulbs in 2 litres of water (a litre is about 1 quart I think). When soft mash the garlic into the water to get as much juice as possible into the liquid. Strain, discard the skins, and then use the garlic drench by diluting the liquid 2 tablespoons to 5 litres of water and spray or water onto the plants that are being attacked.

For your in ground side yard dreams- do you like asparagus?!?!?! It is an investment of time....but since this is your forever home do it sooner than later so they can begin to establish!I would do some purple and green asparagus patches. So easy! They come back every year and all you have to do is put them to bed for winter with compost and or straw cover for cold protection! And they like grass clippings as mulch! Blueberry plants also love grass clippings for mulch/moisture retention!!

I've given up on trying to grow brassica! I've tried for over a decade and the white moths lay their eggs on Kale, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts. I've tried bug netting on my vertical planters last year and the moths found their way in. I've officially given up!! Thanks for the content Becky, you're journey has been so fun to follow!

You can harvest green luffa and then put it in the garage on cardboard with a fan. It will take a few months but they will dry out. In my area there is not enough time in a season to let them dry on the vine.

I’m fairly new to your channel and am so impressed by you and your beautiful, tidy garden. I’ll preface this by saying that I’m not a gardener, but I admire those who are. That being said, I’m an avid fan of Garden Answer. You mentioned aphids on your dahlia’s. Laura (from GA) also battles them. I remember in past years she planted calendula as host plants for aphids. I’m wondering if you might have success by planting calendula around the perimeter of your garden to draw the aphids out and away from the dahlia’s? I’m sure other viewers are much more knowledgeable than myself, but wanted to mention that.
