If your fave UK political party wasn’t in this video, it’s probably because they don’t have a TikTok… or because tiktok’s search UI is an unintuitive mess that doesn’t actually serve you relevant search results after 4 attempts. (TikTok kept only showing me the ScotlandSNP account that has no videos). Sorry SNP! Blame TikTok for bad UI and me for not wanting to retry my search a fifth time

The thing thats really confused me is SAR is an on-call service, similar to the fire brigade or HM Coastguard where by you get paged from your workplace or from your home or wherever you are, go to the SAR base, and respond from there with overall coordination from police. So, are you just gonna spend a weekend sat in base, possibly with no callouts (Search and Rescue can take 0 999 calls for multiple days, especially during winter when people aren't hiking.) Tories have said they want to do this to get young people "socialising", but that sounds extremely pointless.

Here in Australia I know 16-19 year olds who volunteer for the SES(State Emergency Services) and the RFS (Rural Fire Service). They are all wonderful people. But if they were FORCED to do it?... no dangerous profession wants kids who have no choice to be there. The military would be the same.

@@L-iv6lx They wouldn't even be able to do that, because SAR needs *months* of training, so they wouldn't be allowed out on call outs. In most of these sectors, they'd probably just end up doing busy work because they won't have the training, experience or clearance to do anything meaningful and therefore be less likely to actually pursue those things in the future.

That ‘people who don’t contribute don’t get to benefit’ was seriously dark. It’s not about getting benefits - it’s about having current benefits stripped from you. “Volunteer” for the army, or don’t get any social security seems to be the obvious message. Anyone who can’t live off their family until finding work (perhaps also ‘for long enough’ - god forbid you only get seasonal or gig work and need help in between jobs) is probably also going to be expected to put their lives on the line to ‘earn’ the right to below-poverty social benefits.

Gen Z have it bloody hard, compared to all past generations, because they do not have a purpose in life, like the other generations had. I Left school in 1992 and worked. Walk down any high street anywhere in the UK and there are closed shops, malls, there is rubbish everywhere, there is no work in factories as robots are taking over, the Universal Credit sys is all but screwed up, they have massive amounts of debt from University and to top it all off, Gen Z can not ever hope to own a business (that is not on RU-vid) and or ever hope fore retirement as the retirement age keeps going up.

In the last national election in Denmark there was a rise in the party called “liberal alliance” which is the most liberal (as in in economically liberal, less state, less taxes, all that) and that rise is partially credited to the young head of the partys presence on tiktok which gained them a lot of new young voters. It was surprising because young people tend to vote progressively but it goes to show that this tactic can work if executed well.

The winning move for many younger people is "less government, less taxes" but never ever touch anything socially conservative. When you're young it's hard to see everything that could go wrong in life and why you need a solid government regulated safety net. Speaking from experience.

I think on TikTok or generally social media meant to address younger people it would generally be better for politicians to make personal accounts and promote themselves and thus their party. That's not for everyone, but those politicians "can TikTok" could really make an impact.

@@hypatian9093 Yeah, just look at _(some)_ American politicians, especially AOC _(Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez)._ She's got an incredibly large audience and a large following, which is all very much thanks to her; _1)_ being young and actually caring about the same issues as "regular" people, and young people, care about, and; _2)_ her openness on the internet. She's incredibly open about her own life and *why* she believes the things she believes, and she describes *how* her ideas would help the country. That's how politics should be done on the internet. I'm Swedish, live in Norway, and I can't say that neither of "my" countries has anyone doing internet-politics as well as she does.

It is, as my nephew called it, "cringe". The harm the Tories have done to this country they may well be on for not even being the official opposition. They deserve worse, especially with the harm they have done to the disabled, trans people, women, children and their own ancient voter base. Also, the "volunteering" is for blue-light groups - the police, the fire service, the NHS. Dangerous jobs with zero pay or compensation for injury/death at work. I don't believe these questions came from actual TikTok users - Rishi hates confrontation and un-staged questions, that's why he had Tory councillors pretend to be factory workers. TWICE.

National service is normally needed when the country is in a crisis or has a hightened threat, it is not a good look to be going into an election after being in government for 14 years and you are admiting the entire country is falling apart and you need national service for it to function

People always bring up the Nordic states too, who's population is around 1/3 of ENGLAND, when you combine them all. Never mind the rest of the UK. As many people live in Greater London as the entire population of Sweden, who have the largest population of the Nordic states. Also the Army has said they don't want this. They don't want people who don't really want to be there, when they can barely look after the embarrassingly small number they already have thanks to massive budget cuts by the Tories over the last 14 years. We can't even afford to keep the few Challenger 2 tanks we sent to Ukraine in fully working order, never mind our entire fleet (which has been diminished thanks to austerity).

Singapore on the other hand enacted it's national service in 1967, two years after it's independence from the remnant of the British Empire; I don't think it's remotely a stretch to call the early years of a fledgling multicultural nation a crisis state.

I don't like Labour or really any of our political parties but as a disabled person who has seen all the funding and services for people like me be eroded over the past 14 years I am screaming for literally anyone else to be in charge and Labour has the best chance of beating them. My paediatric occupational therapist, the nicest woman ever, quit back in 2017 because she felt like she couldn't help people anymore, there was no more funding, and that was 7 years ago, it's only gotten worse since. I was on the housing list for over 5 years, living in a tiny room full of damp in a house where I could only access my room and the bathroom and I only got the bungalow I am now in because I got pneumonia due to the mould covering every surface, nearly died and have permanent lung damage, one of the only parts of me that had previously worked now wrecked, so my mum sued the council and they wanted to shut us up. Mum got £1000 for their failure to do proper repairs and I got a place to live and neither of us had any fight left in us afterwards. And now they're trying to replace pip with vouchers when I don't need NHS vouchers I need money for extra fuel costs for the massive van that can transport my wheelchair, the giant electricity bill for all my mobility aids and heating costs because I can't regulate my own body temperature, the specialised food and drink due to dysphagia and water nausea, and all the specific clothes, bedding, shoes blankets for the wheelchair. Pip already doesn't cover all that, not even half of it. So my whole family is voting labour, not because we like them, just because we hope it won't be quite as bad under them. It shouldn't be like this, we need voting reform and to get rid of the first past the post voting system.

Im also disabled (not immobile, but getting there... Muscular dystrophy). and let me just let you know im happy youre not stuck in the good ol US of A. I moved from California to a European country and my healthcare is literally 100x better, and im not even a citizen yet. Plus im in one of the poorer European countries... But i feel your pain 🫀. Ive been there.. unfortunately UK and US politics are a little too similar for comfort...

The great thing about all these tiktok accounts is that politicians are beginning to think young people are going to vote in large numbers. I really, really hope they do. I'm in my 50s and most people I know my age vote, but my parents and their friends in their 80s would go through fire to vote every single time, and my kids (in their 20s) find most of their friends don't. Please, please vote - I don't care who you vote for (well I do, but it's not my place to tell you), but until young people vote in the numbers old people vote in, party politics will continue to focus on the pension triple lock and making young people pay for their education.

Also, don't forget that postal and proxy votes are options too (great if you're on holiday during the election). I'm not sure about proxy voting, but for postal votes you don't need ID either - you just give them your signature when you apply (can be done online) and then they match that against the signature on your postal vote.

Millennial from Germany here: yes, unfortunately, politics on tiktok DO work. In Germany, tik tok has mainly been explored by the far right party "AFD" who gained some traction across the last 15 years or so, but for most of that time weren't really popular amongst the youngest voters. As soon as they decided to go hard on IG reels and on Tik Tok, they have now within a couple years, turned that around and in yesterdays election, they actually WON in the 16-25 demographic. Meanwhile, the green party (who had been extremely strong amongst young voters in the last few years, and won in the young demographics 5 years ago at 34 percent) only got 11 percent of those 16-25yrs votes. Which is completely baffling to me. I just want to move. really really far away. Any recommendations?

I'm guessing you're American. I feel really sorry for you. I can't imagine having to choose between a senile old man and a convicted felon to lead the country. I know we have it pretty bad here but at least we have several awful people to choose from (even though labour is almost definitely going to win due to the fact that everyone is desperate to get rid of the conservatives)

I'm Australian and my limited knowledge of the intricacies of British electoral law and practice come from a Tom Scott video. Unlike the USA where politicians are on the hustings 365 days a year, the UK seems to have laws restricting political advertising to the official 6 week campaign. I suspect all the parties had been working on these for a while and all dropped in once the election was called to ensure they were in line with law and practice.

They knew that there had to be an election sometime this year (the last election was 12th December 2019 and they have to have another within 5 years), they just didn't know exactly when it would be. They weren't expecting it to be this early in the year (although our normal voting time is usually May), so the plans weren't fully fledged when the election was called. However, they've been forming plans and having digs at each other for a while. We also had local elections back in May (mostly for Police Crime Commissioners), so they were legally allowed to do some campaigning then.

i may not be a libdem voter, but i think libdems are by far doing the best job at campaigning this election. Ed Davey feels more like a normal guy than any of the other party leaders (not that that’s very hard though). I wonder if other parties will adopt the libdem “have fun” campaigning approach later this election or next? Would make election season a lot more enjoyable

Honestly, from a PR standpoint, the ones running the labour party's and liberal democrats' tiktok accounts are really good at their job. The first tiktok that you reacted to from the labour party (and severely cringed at) was actually really well made from an advertising point of view. It's a trend at them moment and they caught it while it was still very relevant. I feel like the conservatives nor the reform party don't have enough gen Z's within their parties or working for them to be successful on tiktok. We see this here on sweden too. The social democratic party's youth organisation has been doing really well on tiktok due to this reason. Another party, the sweden democrats, has also been quite successful on social media due to them having a lot of youth in their media team. A favourite of mine is when the swedish leftist party put up a clip from a debate between the party leaders and their own leader called the Christian democratic party leader a "sausage swinger". The context to that comment is that the Christian democratic party's leader went into the parliament with a traditional swedish falu sausage once having it represent something regarding the inflation.

To be fair, in some areas (like mine) the Lib Dems have a much higher chance than Labour of winning the seat. They're unlikely to win outright, but they could still get a decent number of seats and be the top pick if a coalition is required or even be the opposition party, depending how badly the Conservatives do.

Whenever election season rolls around I'm just reminded about how awful the first past the post system is. I'm someone who usually votes Lib Dem or Green but it's almost always a wasted vote, and given how badly I want the tories out, I feel like I have to vote tactically for Labour rather than actually vote for the party I am most politically aligned with. We desperately need proportional representation in this country.

It depends where you live! If you’re in a constituency where the tories have a chance of getting in then yes, you need to vote labour. But in many constituencies it is tactical to vote Lib Dem or green. I live in a VERY safe labour seat, so I vote green so that my mp feels under pressure to continue to win my vote. Know what the polls are in your area!

@@clsisman My constituency is a rather special one in that the MP that wins in our area will be the party that wins overall. Every single election without fail this has happened. So it'll almost certainly be Labour that wins this year which is why I feel like there's no point in my vote. If proportional representation were a thing then people would be able to vote exactly how they wanted rather than this strange concept of tactical voting.

i don't really like the national service, as someone who will be nearly 18 in the uk, because despite being given the "opportunity" to volunteer in our local community, it won't encourage anyone to work in those areas and will cause more problems than it will solve because being forced to do something historically means we don't do it, and why would we want to do something good if we're being forced to? if they really cared about the youth helping their local community they would have encouraged it more beforehand and not just thrown it out of the blue (the head of military had no idea a couple days before it was announced) to make it seem like hes all for a "team effort" again like in covid. also it will cost them several billion pounds for this scheme , whilst they have been cutting funding to the actual army...

I can remember doing a media studies course in secondary school (don't worry, I didn't waste my student loans money going onto a degree in that subject!) which talked about how Obama utilised Facebook when going for the presidency. Events/rallies were organised, posts put out etc all from his social media accounts. He was one of the first to actually weaponise social media... and it seemed to work quite well for him.

Previous manifestos I’ve most closely aligned with green but it is a complete waste of time voting for them in a first past the post system. Last election my constituency went from red to blue so I don’t know if I should vote Labour even though they have really disappointed me they’d still obviously be better than the conservatives

I don't like Labour or really any politicians but as a disabled person who has seen all the funding and services for people like me be eroded over the past 14 years I am screaming for literally anyone else to be in charge. My paediatric occupational therapist quit back in 2017 because she felt like she couldn't help people anymore, there was no more funding, and that was 7 years ago, it's only gotten worse since. I was on the housing list for over 5 years, living in a tiny room full of damp in a house where I could only access my room and the bathroom and I only got the bungalow I am now in because I got pneumonia due to the mould covering every surface, nearly died and have permanent lung damage, one of the only parts of me that had previously worked now wrecked, so my mum sued the council and they wanted to shut us up. Mum got £1000 for their failure to do proper repairs and I got a place to live and neither of us had any fight left in us afterwards. And now they're trying to replace pip with vouchers when I don't need NHS vouchers I need money for extra fuel costs for the massive van that can transport my wheelchair, the giant electricity bill for all my mobility aids and heating costs because I can't regulate my own body temperature, the specialised food and drink due to dysphagia and water nausea, and all the specific clothes, bedding, shoes blankets for the wheelchair. Pip already doesn't cover all that, not even half of it. So my whole family is voting labour, not because we like them, just because we hope it won't be quite as bad under them.

I'm still voting Green (I believe the more votes they receive the more campaign money they get and TV exposure for future elections let's face it even with Caroline Lucas as an MP they were treated pretty poorly looking at you Question Time ) Those operating Starmer are way too right wing for me and I can't live with my conscious if i voted for them . I have skin in the game as a disabled person but they seem they just want to continue on with a lot of Tory policy especially after going back on al the progressive stuff Rachael Reeves is a true right winger. I will be pushing PR with my more than likely Labour MP ( there is no way they aren't going to win with a majority) Labour could have given us so much hope and now they are just depressing.

It doesn't always boil down to misogyny although I would absolutely believe that a lot of the people who support reform are probably in some way misogynistic (because a lot of them are racist and homophobic and transphobic so why not be misogynistic as well), I don't think that was the case here.

That's because the people in the United States get brainwashed from birth into loving their country and the German state actually takes care of its people. The UK does neither of these things. Of course, when I was growing up they attempted by only teaching us the good parts of British history however, the fact that we have access to the internet kind of defeats the point of that. Perhaps if they had us pledging allegiance to the union flag everyday of our childhood or maybe if the government actually took care of the people like they used to then perhaps things would be different.

Just want to point out, the reason Rishi is trying to recruit Gen Z to the Army (presumably on Mcwages), is because going in the army used to be an attractive job for young guys with few or no qualifications. But the wage hasn't gone up in line with inflation for years (like a lot of other jobs) so now these guys can earn more on a building site or suchlike, doing jobs that don't involve being shot at or killing people for a living. So the Tories solution- plug gaps in the army with underskilled, possibly not very motivated young people who will be leaving after 12 months anyway. It's going to be great.

Interesting just how bad Rishi’s little speech is. He doesn’t seem to know who he’s trying to talk to. ‘A lot of you already have some views on it’ - talking directly to the TikTok audience, presumably people whose opinions he cares about (ie voters, though it could be children who might impact their parents). ‘They’ll be able to choose’ - talking to an audience who are not the people he’s addressing - also not the ‘everyone’ of his previous phrase ‘Or one weekend per month volunteering in roles within your local community’ - in some senses this could be correct: you might have young adults volunteering in your community, but there is a heavy implication here that this means the local community of the people volunteering - and thus the ‘you’ he’s talking to are people who will be directly involved All of this pronoun usage could technically be correct (given those old enough to vote today will be too old for the proposed service, and my previous point regarding ‘your’ local community) but it really feels like he/his scriptwriter has just mashed together various talking points without actually considering their audience - which is odd, considering that being on TikTok is specifically a tool to target an audience.
