MRMATTANDMRCHAY's tribute to the recently modernised O&K lifts at our local Tesco.
A bit of history for you...!
**1970
Octagon shopping centre opened.
**Late 1970s
Tesco opened - car Parking on top of building (2 floors) which was joined via bridges to the Newlands Car Park next to it.
**2002ish
Shopping centre lifts modernised by local company
**2008
Eden shopping centre opened. Major development - bus station moved, all lifts modernised, new shops and cinema built. The 1970s Tesco building unmodernised (old building in the middle of a new complex!). Original O&K lifts still there!
**2009
Tesco LEFT lift DDA compliancy components added - lower buttons, floor displays.
**2011 (Nov/Dec)
Tesco RIGHT lift modernised by Stannah.
**2012 (Aug)
Tesco LEFT lift modernised by Stannah.
I enjoy seeing the older generation lifts. Even though they are old they have character - large machine rooms and loads of kit/relays to watch! I find these facinating and try to work out 'how it works'. Nowadays, lift modernisations strip the lift of it's original character with standardised black buttons, circuit boards and LED displays.
Here at Tesco, the original machinery (motors, gearboxes) have been reused. With better voltage and field regulators the 'whoop'ing motor noise has now gone!
(See "don't leave your motor room unlocked" video on yt)
Yes, the lift are now more reliable, but boring!
