Bruce was going thru a divorce at the time this album came out and Patti had just joined the band. They got together during this time and you can see love forming in this video. They got married a few years later and have been together ever since. I play this video often, one of my favorites. Thanks you two for covering it.
@paulw.woodring7304

Patty joined the band in '84 for the "Born in the USA" tour, which I saw in Cleveland that Summer, and even from the cheap seats way in the back of the old Richfield Coliseum I could see the chemistry between them. I guess he couldn't at that point, having replaced Stevie with Nils right before the tour. He finally took off like a rocket with that album and spent a crazy two years on the road, and then married a young starlet named Julian Phillips (she was in the TV series "Sisters" in that era) at the end of the tour. That didn't work out, "Tunnel of Love" came out of their rocky relationship, during which time he fell for Patti and caused a big scandal for awhile. But he redeemed it by staying with Patti ever since, and being one of the great romances of Rock 'n Roll. And boy did I just cover a lot of territory in a few sentences.

Patti is from BIG MONEY and was raised in DEAL, NJ which is connected to Asbury park....neighbors in the vicinity were Peter Falk, Telly Savalas and other celebs I cant even remember anymore. She was around the club scene since the 70's and Bruce knew her for MANY years prior to BITUSA...so did everybody else. Her brother played in the Z BAND and she was often singing with them on the stage of the Stone Pony, Fastlane, Wonder bar etc Her nickname back then was "Parking Lot Patti" and thats how members of the Jukes and other prominent Asbury bands Lord Gunner, Cats on a Smooth Surface.....called her. We have sadly lost too many of them, I'd also recommend a live version of Jungleland. Its the sort of song you always remember the first time you hear. "Tunnel of Love" is my favorite Springsteen album. It means the most to me for events that happened in my life at the time added to what Bruce was singing about - the destruction of his first marriage and his decision to leave the E Street Band (both would be fixed by his love affair and marriage to his wife Patti Scialfa, the redheaded guitarist and vocalist in his band, plus his reemergence with the E Street Band). The poetry on this album is some of the most poignant of his long writing career ("All I can think of is being five years old following behind you at the beach tracing your footprints in the sand trying to walk like a man"). The songs are mostly about love lost, a theme he's returned to time and again. It just strikes the right chord with me.

The first time was 4th July 1985 and of course..... he opened the show with his song “Independence Day.” That would be good one to check out if you enjoy slower, deeper Bruce. It’s about his not always harmonious, relationship with his father. Bruce’s writing covers so many topics so beautifully. He’s one of my top three singer songwriters of all time, with Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler. All of them have been so prolific over the years and produced such clever, insightful, atmospheric and relatable songs. And in the cases of Bruce and Mark, fantastic orchestration with it. Ok J and Amber, I’ve been a huge fan of Bruce and the E-Street band for decades. The “girl who joined him” is Patti Scialfa. She and Bruce had many mutual friends in the Asbury Park, NJ music scene over the years and he loved her voice and had her join the band. Bruce was then married to Juliann Phillips, a model of some prominence at the time, but things were not working out. Speculation at the time was that Bruce and Patti began a romance while on tour and then Bruce got divorced from Juliann. When this video came out, it was the first “confirmation” that he and Patti were actually together, so it was very surprising at the time. Bruce and Patti went on to get married and have children and remain together to this day. She is still in the band, and has even done some solo work musically. Speaking of seeing Bruce in concert, I saw him for the first time during the tour shown in this video (Tunnel of Love album tour-1988). I’ve seen him several times since, including just last month here in Texas. He still puts on a great show, tho not quite the energy at 73 as he had in his 20s & 30s. As sad as divorce can be, Bruce and Patti appear to be true soulmates and it seems it worked out for the best. Please post more Bruce reactions, he’s got such a vast catalog. I know his videos will routinely get blocked, but other channels indicate they are able to post after 30 days or so. Love the channel, keep em coming.

Jungleland has the best sax solo. A lot of this album was about his then current first marriage. He was married to a Los Angeles based actress. It didn't last long. He now lives on n NJ farm 2 miles from my sister, which includes Thrill Hill recording studio. His 2nd wife of many years is the woman who sang with him. A Jersry girl. Patti Scialfa.

Also, Bruce Springsteen's sax player Clarence Clemons sang a duet with Jackson Browne called "You're a Friend of Mine". Jay and Amber, Clarence had a really good singing voice. I didn't know that really until then. The two really were friends and met when Jackson Browne did a show with Springsteen. It's a great forgotten song. It even features a popular actress at the time named Daryl Hannah. She was in a movie with Tom Hanks called " Splash". This is a good movie for you guys to react to. Romantic comedy from 1984! Big hit!

Clarence did have a great voice and did none solo work too, as did most of the band; Patti Scialfa, Nils Lofgren, and Little Steven VanZandt. I love that you suggested Splash for the movie channel; one of my favorite movies; so many quotable one liners that I still use today….think big be big my friend, uh-oh you fell…oooh that hurt, she left me and my life’s a shambles- that’s the news you want the weather..anywhere but the first three rows, 🤣🤣

My favorite part of this video is when he stops playing the guitar, turns to Patti and says "all you have to do is say yes", and he moves his hand, slicing the air, indicating to me it is a deal then. Jay, watch this video again as your eyes were closed when he made this hand gesture. It gets me every time I see it. This song is a very different love song --- a song about 2 people who've been hurt and wounded by love, not newcomers to love but seasoned veterans. Outstanding and one of my favorites.

Actually, Patti and Bruce were not married at the time of the Tunnel of Love tour, only a couple of years later they would become spouses. However, the love sparks between them were more than obvious at the time.

I cried like a baby when they announced on the radio that he had died. Have to add, I keep trying to sing along to this at Chris' pace... it just don't work LOL

My wife and I attended the ‘Tunnel of Love’ concert in Wembley, London. The opening sequence has to be the best of any concert that we’ve seen. I’d bought the album previously, and on hearing the lyrics thought ‘this is a guy going through relationship issues.’ Sure enough, not long after that, his marriage to Julianne Langshaw (sp?) broke down. Bruce has been with Patti Scialfa ever since.

In order to truly understand his greatness, depth and range you would have to listen to Bruce for several months. There’s just too much there to get doing bits and pieces. One masterpiece would be Jungleland(live at either Hyde Park or the 25th anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at MSG). Whatever one you do make sure it’s while Clarence was still alive and playing sax.
