SO WHAT is another great tune to improvise on, with only 2 different scales!
Download the pdf and learn well the main riff, the "Bill Evans" chord voicings, and the structure:
www.pietroballestrero.com/wp-...
You can start playing the theme together with me, and then we are going to IMPROVISE ONE CHORUS EACH.
At the end you can play the final theme together with me again.
NOTICE! One of most difficult things in SO WHAT is not to get lost in the structure... Pay close attention to the section letters: A1, A2, B, A3.
IMPROVISATION TIPS.
Playing on this harmonic progression can be considered at different levels.
We can read it in a very simple way thinking about only two scales: the A parts are in the key of C major (Dm7 is its 2nd degree), and the B part is in the key of Db major (Ebm7 is its 2nd degree).
Said in terms of MODAL HARMONY, the A parts are in D DORIAN, and the B part is in Eb DORIAN. We can also use the minor pentatonic scales of the two chords.
At a more advanced level, it can be very interesting to use:
- arpeggios ("superimposing" different arpeggios of the key on the chords)
- 4th intervals and upper structures
We are going to work on this kind of material later on!
Look for more titles in the PLAYLIST:
